Different panel numbers

I was wondering if anybody's ever tried to make a good freestyle pellet bag with less or more than 32 panels. I was especially thinking if anybody has made a 26 panel or 38 panel bag and how they performed.

With the move towards smaller bags, I think a 26 panel bag would work better than a 32 panel. Because the panel area would be slightly bigger and there would be less stitching - so the bag would be softer.

I dont know if this will be helpful but like the third bag I ever sewed was a 26 and it really sucked. Mind you I couldnt sew very well then or even now I would say but I dont think it would ever be good. Its important to note that a lot of panels are not stitched togeather in a 32 but with this 26 panel design that would be impossible with this pattern and you would have to sew every seam to another seam/ This simple step with a 32 panel really helps a 32 breakin in nice and this 26 would miss this and probably not breakin as nice. Just a thought.

I think many stichers don't stich between the small hexagon panels. Abshires are stitched on all panels though - and they're still good! I made a little paper model though and I think it would be easy to get away with only stitching 3 panels per square - but you'd have to plan ahead I think.

The fact that there are less seams should mean there is less break in anyway!

My favorite design other than the popular 32 is the 12 panel. [dodecahedron; all pents] It's nice and round, very simple, and not much stitching. I think it works great for small bags. The problem is that you can't have very complex color designs, but that's trivial.

The two Abshires I have, 1 mini and 1 reg, are not stitched between the hexagon panels. Maybe it just looks that they´re sewn together because the distance from the corner of a pentagon to another is shorter than in the majority of the "better" 32´s? Or maybe you´re bag is different compared to my Abshires...

I think the design with 12 panels works great in sandbags, I don´t really like sandbags that much anymore tho, but the beadbags I´ve made with this pattern haven´t turned out that well. They´ve gotten too floppy and broken in pretty unevenly.

I have a regular abshire and 2 minis and the hexs are not sewn togeather either

what do you mean the hexes aren't sewn together?
I'm still waiting for my mini abshire to come so if they're not sewn together, wouldn't the pellets spill?

Richie tacks the ends of the hexes together, some people leave them wide open . . . either way the beads don't spill out.

Scott Behmer from Seattle - when he sewed - made very nice 12 panel beadbags. He hasn't sewn in a very long time, though, and I don't have any of his bags, so sadly I can't testify to their level of play compared to my 32's now... Either way, they seem to have been enjoyed very much by most of RCS.

man i really should start stitching again shouldn't i, it's been many months now. yea i loved my 12 panels, but i'm not a picky guy, and i wasn't a great stitcher, i was still improving with every bag.

Abshire definitly sews his bags with bleed holes, i have a mini and an older larger one of his bags. he might "hitchhike" along those seems to save time in sewing, but he leaves them open.

ive never tried to sew a 24 panel bag with bleed holes but i think if you were to only sew around the hexs youd get a pretty nice bag. this way the bleed holes would be wher ethe squares and octagon meet.

14 panel bags work great with bleed holes, just sew around the squares. plus it takes half the time of a 32. Nate Pipenburg (Overtin) makes a nice 14 panel.

i made a 60 panel bag that had bleed holes where 5 triangles intersected.

i made a snub cube (36 panels) with bleed holes and it was really harsh on the fabric and eventually tore.

My question is: how do the fillings stay inside despite beeld holes and open gaps between the hexes? I want to learn to make some decent bags.... maybe free samples but these bleed holes have gotten me interested...
