well i started with a guy.
me and david used to do anything to keep us busy. and we used to hack. so one day i brought out a cheap hackysack agian as we were skatboarding in this street by his house. a couple days of just trying to keep it up, then david did some research. from then on we improved together. he always got things before me, put it was kinda equall for a while. he could string better and stuff. now hes insane. anyways, besides david and once in a while another friend, it was mostly me and him learning footbag together. ever since i moved he has improved alot, and ive just improved. (but it dosent bother me at all, i progress at my own rate.) so it is different for every girl, and we get into it for different reasons.

My sister seems to possess some footbag skill, one day while in sandles I asked her to try and stall just for the hell of it, she hit inside to inside stall after about 8 minutes of pointers! She seems to be left footed too which is always cool to see!

However, as much as I would like her to start kicking, I don't ...... tagging around me and my friends when she is 13 and I am 17..... not the coolest feeling in the world. She is asking for some Lavers for her brithday though. Who knows, I won't stop her from kicking, I will even help her if she likes it, she can take the bus to Seattle though, and find some other people to session with.

A more forward approach would be a little less of, "heres our club card with our website on it, get ahold of us if you want to learn more". But instead try something like "here let me show you how, heres my cell number call me and I can show you more"....

we have one fella started with the club, he really liked being able to contact an actual player rather than checking the site...so maybe that is a good response to any potential players.?

Beware!

My 3-year-old little sister is very into footbag. She can set the bag from toe stall (ok, she puts the bag on her toes with her hand). <--But I'm still so proud of her.

I also take all the credit that her favourite song is "Fear of the Dark" by Iron Maiden. 8)

age doesn't matter with footbag. i hangout with a guy who is in his 60's or 70's. because he plays soccer and now footbag. i bring him to college parties, and he gets all these girls' phone numbers.

To most people who know about hacky sacking, it's only something to do to waste time or when they are bored during school (lunch, after-school, etc...) If more people just realised how much more there is to footbag then just kicking a sack of pellets around with no style or anything, then it would have a better reputation and more people would be interested in it.

Well, that's where we come in to play, us footbaggers, it's our job to show ignorant people that this is just MORE than Hacky sack.

I think another factor of the Not many girls is the average girl (not every girl) is not as competive.

For example. An average guy attempts a toe stall he sees it his toe for a second and rolls off.

His first thought will be SON OF A BITCH IM NOT STOPPING UNTIL IT SITS ON MY TOE.

Put the average girl in that situation and she will not have the same instict. Its not patience its not strength or about sweating. The average women would think wow i was kind of close to doing that. then that thought is followed by the shrug the shoulders and say oh well and walk away.

The lack of seeing any women in a freestyly circle is also like closing the door of a woman giving the sport a chance.

I think its a difference of mindsets. the average women competitive nature is only in a verbal form. win lose do a trick or not do a trick its just the same reaction either way.

Now if your a girl who does love freestyle or is a competitve driven athlete then my hat goes off to you. and please dont attack me i know women that dont fit this fold but unfortanately i know many many many more women who have this lack of competiveness and that just seems to be a general problem.

Im currently trying to get my girl into freestyle she is looking to get in shape so im playing that angle to motivate her.

Let me just say I disagree with this. I think you're ignoring or not aware of the other issues that this hypothetical girl would be dealing with. Most of the times that I've seen girls try to do a toe stall, it has been in front of many other people. Most of the time (all of the times) it's been a medium to large size group of guys, and usually if they're trying to get the girl to play or try anything to do with footbag, one of more of them are trying to "get with her" or one of them is dating her. If I were being pursued by this guy who I like, or even just hanging out with a bunch of guys, I am less likely to "make a fool out of myself in public" than if I were just trying it by myself in my room. I am starting to teach a guy who feels just that way. And in many of those situations, the girl has did not know most of the guys, or wasn't very comfortable around them. I know that I was embarrassed when I hung out with my footbagging friends in the beginning and couldn't kick it more than three times, or couldn't do a toe stall after trying a long time. And I knew them pretty well. It's not just a girl thing. I've talked to a lot of guys who later started playing who have said the same thing.

I've seen WAY more random guys try to do a toe stall a few times and fail and then walk away than just sit there and try it until they get it. I guess I can't really say you're wrong, since I don't know you or any of the girls you're talking about, but your "average girl" is different than many of the girls and women who I've met.
tuomoruutufan wrote:The lack of seeing any women in a freestyly circle is also like closing the door of a woman giving the sport a chance.
I have not been in the scene as long as many other people on this forum, but from what I've seen the number of female players and their skills have only gone up. It's still not enough, but I think using the analogy of a closing door is not quite right in this situation.

The lack of seeing any people of color in a freestyle circle is like a person of color closing the door on the sport. What is the point of this argument? I don't mean to personally attack tuomoruutufan (that's hard to type :) .) Seeing this sort of statement constantly regarding women players doesn't do anything for the cause.
tuomoruutufan wrote:I think its a difference of mindsets. the average women competitive nature is only in a verbal form. win lose do a trick or not do a trick its just the same reaction either way.
How many women have you seen do something which they worked hard to accomplish, and then end up not caring if they were able to do it or not? Maybe a lot, who knows? When I've seen ANY girl do anything with a footbag that she was trying to do, I don't see anything but satisfaction and often happiness on her face. Yes, men and women are different. A lot of what happens in our bodies and minds is different. But I do think it's important to remember that it's not just all in the chemicals of our brains; a lot of these sorts of behavior and tendencies are taught, meaning that in the right situation, they can be overcome.
tuomoruutufan wrote:and please dont attack me i know women that dont fit this fold but unfortanately i know many many many more women who have this lack of competiveness and that just seems to be a general problem.
Maybe you're looking at this differently than I am. Maybe it's the situation scaring them off, or maybe they don't actually have any interest in it at all. Or maybe girls just don't have a competitive "nature" and the ones who do play footbag or any other sport are overcoming their gender handicaps.

It doesn't matter; footbag is not about being competitive. Footbag is about meeting and surpassing one's own personal goals. If someone doesn't have the drive to do that, I don't think it's because of their gender.

I don't pretend to represent other people's opinions; I just hope I didn't offend anyone while explaining my opinion.

heh heh, my gf told me a couple weeks back that she wants to learn "to hack" only because she wants to do it with me. she isnt particularly appreciative of the sport, and her only reason is so she can do it with me. im hoping once she gets better, she will want to...for better reasons. but, its good enough for now, certainly.
but oh man, it is pretty tough teaching her...(it doesnt help that im not incredible myself) and she doesnt make it any easier for me. somehow she managed to put some holes in my sandman the first time she tried kicking...

I have lost many a girl to the footbag.
Like every morning when she wants to go have some "quality time with me" I would rather be shredding. Or she calls and is like lets go the movies and I am like lets go shred.
I guess I just have to stick with my true love...Footbag :P

My girl always wants to play but she only does one kick...it's like a cheerleader kick kinda...raise the knee, raise the foot next kinda thing. I'm tring to get her to kick it normal but, oh man, it's like teaching a five year old.

I want a footbag girl (shredita???) but I don't think I'm training my girl too well. *sigh* Oh well, what can you do but keep trying.

Emily, that was a nice read, i really like your thoughts and the way you present them :)

Guys, i feel your pain . My girlfriend is learning quite fast, but she got no real motivation to keep going. Although she understands
my obsession about it, she doesnt share it at all, and gets bored quickly, when i talk about it or when i want to show her some crazy vids. When i show her stuff like
pixie butter, and i dont fuck it up
as i usually do when i foolishly try
to impress somebody, all she will say is : nice ass !
Maby in summer, i can kindle her interest, but till that day i have
to keep my dirty footbag secrets to myself...

But check this out : i havent seen
my mom for a bit, and of course i told her how mad todexon was, and i brought " the move" along, just to
explain stuff better ( she actually
believed, that my xbdy rakes were the hardest possible trick ever ).
Well, not anymore ; after watching
the vid she was like : that blonde kiddo is the most powerful and grace
ful athlet she'd ever seen
and about Ales she said, that he better stops bodybuilding, because
otherwise, he wouldnt be able to move as fast anymore.
She understood how sick Yves shuffle
was and said that he's the Ghandi
of footbag 8O
After that we went to the basement to fetch some videotapes and i asked
her if she wants to try a toe stall ; and she hit it, beautifully :D
So guys, never give up on getting
women into the game, it can be quite
surprising !

This is coming from a "girlfriend" of a footbagger. From my experinece if you push anyone into footbag, when they don't have the correct motivation, neither parties will be satisfied. Have you ever tried hanging out with her, taking up one of her hobbies? It can be frustrating doing something you're not really into JUST to spend time with your partner.

Would you want to spend hours durring the day trying to knit, without dropping a stitch?? You can't expect her to WANT to play footbag just because you think having a footbag girlfriend is heaven.

If both you and your girlfriend have the right motivation to teach/learn footbag then you should not degrade her by comparing her to a five year old. As a teacher you need to have patience and not belittle her, or don't be her teacher.

GIRLS ROCK!
What's wrong with your girlfriends wanting to play hackysack with you? Even if they totally suck at it, it's great if you're both having fun.
Don't we just play for the fun of it after all?

You guys make me envious that you even have girfriends that will play hack with you even if they do play like a 5 year old.
