People who kill for sport deserve to be captured, tagged, set loose in a confined area, made to think they have a chance of survival, and shot themselves.

Funny you mention that! I've actually been looking into vegetarian dishes lately when I go to resturaunts, trying to learn more about the "lifestyle". In the future I'd like to start eating only the amount of meat that's needed by my body to function and not waste. I do, of course, eat meat now. I'm not necessarily against hunting for food, but I still think it's a shame how animals are mass slaughtered. It just doesn't seem right to me. I'm only feel strongly against hunting for sport, there's no need for it, at all.

Yesss, controversy!!!

Chris do you eat any meat from the supermarket? Until you don't you can't condemn someone who kills an animal in its natural environment and eats it rather than supporting a slaughter house.

Do you know what group of people put the most time, money, and energy into conserving wildlife and different ecosystems? Yea the hunters!

Life feeds on life! (random tool quote :D)death is neccisary for the survival of other lifeforms.

Ryan ryan ryan! I never said that there was anything wrong with killing for food. I'm fine with that. I'm also fine with the fact that we need to slaughter animals in mass quantities to eat, I just don't think we do it in a very fashionable manner. The only thing I DO have a problem with is SPORT hunting. Maybe nobody knows what that means. Sport hunting is hunting for the sake of killing something, saying you killed it, and taking it as a trophy.

Recap:

Hunting to eat it = OK
Hunting to brag/hang it up = NOT OK

True, but MOST people eat what they kill, example, deer, pheasant, turkey etc. If we're talking ivory hunters or skin poachers in africa then that's a totally different story, no one kills a deer, and chucks the carcass, that's just rediculous.

those families are so dumb, they could have at least sold the meat and made good money, thats like chucking a huge bag of groceries on the side of the road that you just payed good money for.

Almost everybody here hunts. A lot for just the sake of killing something. Like the other day, a dude in a boat went along killing everything he saw. He never picked them up to use as food. He just shot them as he went by.

Also, bear baiting. That’s when hunters put human food in a trash can like thing to bait bears so they can shot them. Not for there meat but for there coats. There was a measure on the ballot last election to ban that. It didn't pass.

Wolf control. Once upon a time in a land far far away, Alaskan hunters hunted to many wolves. To bring them back they started to breed them and the wolves population grew back. Now, oh my god, there too many wolves there eating all our moose! The moose that we love to kill. There having all our fun! So the solution? Lets go kill them from helicopters to control the population! That’s the way. Let’s get the asshole Frank Murkowis to give us passes so we can hunt in Denali and other national parks.

We don't need to hunt anymore. We don't even need to eat meat anymore but that a whole different vector that I don’t feel like getting into. Back when if you didn't get yourself a deer your family would starve. Nowadays, just go to the local store.

The thing I don't get is that people spend more money to go out and hunt it with their two hands than it would be just to go to the store and buy some meat. They must get some sick fun out of it.

This is a subject I feel strongly about but I'm not looking for a fight.

Why is hunting even a sport? 'I bored. Come on kids lets go kill something'. Maybe they have there own version of footblogs. “Yo, check out what I hit today deer>rabbit>deer! I kept the-ing the moose. That’s the hardest animal!

Hunting.

Hmmm, i'm quite mixed on this issue. Here in Aotearoa game hunting is an accepted form of entertainment but the number of regular hunters has been dropping over the last two to three decades. I myself have shot possum and rabbit and done so without qualms because the bastards are introduced pests that wreak havoc with our native flaura and fauna. My father hunts deer and i've been out with him a few times. Through that i learnt that hunters in general aren't bloodthirsty like you'd expect them to be but rather they're very in tune with nature, very worried about unnecissary suffering of animals or defacement of the environment.

Perhaps it's these experiences that bring me to be less worried about a hunter that kills one animal (for food or sport) than about industries like poultry and swine that imprison and torture animals for most of their natural lives and THEN kill them.

If i had my way i'd like to see an end to all animal cruelty but i think it's important we deal with the right cases first.

I'm in Wisconsin, and I know quite a few vegans (including me) and TONS of vegetarians, so we are definitely NOT all hunters.

As long as hunting is perceived as a sport instead of a means of food gathering, there will be morons who kill purely for the "fun" of it. There were a couple of guys at work the other day talking about how big their exit wounds were (on a deer). I thought immediately of the series "Band of Brothers", and the gore of it all.

Flesh is flesh, whether it's from a 4 legged hooved animal, or a 2 legged lavered animal.

I highly reccommend a vegetarian / vegan lifestyle. Not only is a properly run vegan/vegetarian diet more healthy, but you never have to feel sorry when you go out to eat. If I switched back to eating meat right now, it would destroy me emotionally. I've been vegan for about 5 years, and vegetarian 9 years before that.

There was a tribe of cannibals in the pacific back before the 1950s that referred to human meat as "long pig".
some "food" for thought.

OK, so I'm breaking a number of rules, here (drunk, and not reading many other posts in this thread, but I'm drunk, so I don't give a fuck  )

I'm not a big fan of killing things out of sport. Basicly I don't see it as sport unless the oppisition is equally matched. In the case of hunting, it's not so.

I'm not going to condemn all you hunters out there, though. I eat meat I get at a supermarket, however I'd prefer to *have to* kill my own. But, seeing as how I don't have to, I dont (simple).
Now, I did try hunting. I shot a crow, once. But I didn't kill it. I had to walk up and put it out of the misery I put it in and that changed my life. I had to kill something. I remember it looking into my eyes and realising that, although I'd fucked it's chances of survival by shooting it in the first place, I was going to end it's pain.

I'm now very close to what you'd call a budist

I only hope all you hunters out there experience the same thing I did. And realise that there's no power in killing another being...
I only ask that you do it for food, and not for sport. (It's the same with fishing.)
Comment in the BCS blog if you feel the need to.

This is an off-topic question for vegetarians:

Do you use milk products?

My grandpa hunts mooses. He's always done that, and I can't see what's wrong with that. I've never thought that someone would even think about shooting animals just for fun (except little kids with an air rifle vs. little birds and squirrels). The headcount of mooses would grow too large if people wouldn't hunt them. Car crashes with them are very common here.

And the meat tastes good. IMHO.
