The Obsession with Dropped Tricks (no video)

Post by Splint »

I think it's ridiculous that many video makers have recently become infatuated with showing trick attempts without success.

These are mostly being shown of Vasek attempting some crazy thing or other.

What's the point? To show that he or others are trying things? Big deal. I try a TON of shit that I don't land, but I don't film it for everyone to see that it doesn't get hit.

I saw a video recently of Vasek attempting Phasing Flurricane. A 5 dex attempt and mad promps for the attempt, but it wasn't even close. At least 2 of the 3 dexes were 'the'. Another video showed him attempting Phasing Gyro DLO, Phasing Vortex, Phasing Mobius, and Spinning Superdooperfly. All cool attempts, but none of them were hit.

I just think it's lame and somewhat rude to the Player to post failed tricks.

I disagree. Especially in Vasek's case, I like to see what he's up to right
now, what tricks he's going for. Although I agree that if the attempt is
horribly 'the' it's unnecessary to put it in a video, I still find it breathtaking
to see Vaske come very close to a ridiculous move. It's interesting to
see how the limits are pushed. It's interesting to see where Vasek's
creativity leads him - inventing moves I wouldn't dare to have thought
of before.

I think this just came about since Eric's sorcery101 video, where the
attempts make sense, because it fits to the whole Fantasia theme, where
the apprentice learns and gets better and better.

I Agree

It would be even more fun to see these tricks hit before seen them tried anywhere.

At the vid "Final Shred" from FFO Vases hits Symp Furious Ripwalk - that didn't seem SO big after seeing him trying it in various videos.
If none of the failing attempts would be showed that clip would have been a blast to those who hadn't seen the attempts live etc.

I don't have a problem with this. I really enjoy it because it opens my mind to possibilities that I have not thought of yet.

I would never have thought of a phasing vortex, phasing dlo...Spinning montage, spinning superduperfly...

The fact that vasek (or anyone else that attempts tough tricks like these) are even coming that close is amazing.

I enjoy seeing tricks that are hard, regardless if they are hit or not.

In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing an entire video straight on hard tricks, regardless if they are hit or not! Show me the creativity.

in small doses, I think it's okay to show an attempt. but I don't like it when there's a 'segment' of dropped huge tricks. maybe one or two ridiculous tricks that someone is CLOSE to interspersed around runs and / or busting.

who really cares? How could you not like someone trying something huge like that and pushing some major limits? Does it take your all so precious time away from you? what? now you can't brush your teeth in the morning because you watched vasek almost it spinning superduperfly, can't get to sleep now on time because I watched a couple of Phasing Flurricane attempts? I seriously love watching footage like that, it makes me feel like going out there are busting something myself, and makes it actually seem possible. This thread is pointless, sorry  And please don't take this like im being a dick, I don't mean any offence

I think for aesthetic reasons huge attempts at moves should be left. Not because it isn't cool that Vasek's trying it, but because I think it encourages this from younger players. "What, Vasek's trying that crazy trick? Okay, I'll try a crazy trick out of my limit and post it and see if I get some props!" I don't feel it's very representative of a person's game, and I agree with Brad, it seems a bit rude to post a players failed attempts at something.

But dropping phasing flurricane is not a failure. Rather, it is announcing one's footbag success- success so magnificent that one is able to attempt tricks that most players have not yet concieved.

I enjoy watching huge tricks, whether or not they are hit.

The sorcery video was the first time I can remember of seeing Vasek drop the bag. I didn't necessarily enjoy it, but it showed that not even Vasek is perfect. This could aslo be considered an encouragement for the less experienced players. It's kind of implying that you can drop the bag and still move up in your game. You learn from your "mistakes."

Yeah, attempts are a big thing when you're a lower level player like "Anyone compared to Vasek"...with a few close exceptions obviously. It puts the whole game into perspective. I try something like Goliath, and come really close. I come so close that I know for a fact that I will hit it at some point in the future.

I see video of Vasek missing (Symp?) Furious Ripwalk. It foreshadows what's soon to come in a while. Sure enough, exactly one while passes, and we see him hit it in the Finland Final Shred video.

It's inspiring in that it makes me want to think big, and then hit something bigger. And I mean, straight up, not much else can show how much the envelope of footbag is being pushed.

At my first tournament, I could hit maybe 4 contacts guiltless consistently. (I wasn't too concerned with having a strong foundation yet, that came later.) I asked Erik if he could try Wonton ss Flail for me. I could barely illusion, and no way in hell could I quantum. :)

He said, "I can't hit that."
Me, "Could you try?"
Him, "Yeah, I could try."

Being where I was in my footbag development, it was amazing to me that he could even TRY that. Another one of the biggest highlights of the weekend was when Juan missed Nuclear Mobius.

The same thing goes for Vasek. In Montreal, I remember Ahren and Pete asking him about what he's been trying lately. It was so exciting seeing him try stuff that was still too hard for him to hit on a regular basis, or at all.

Then I think back to when I first saw a flail on video, at Flipsider. And said, out loud, "How is that even possible?"

Interestingly enough, I've now hit Flail > ss Flail > rpt x4.

It's all perspective yo.

I agree with Bjoern, i love seeing videos of that kind of stuff. However, really only from the best of the best, like Vasek and Ales. Even if Vaska misses Phasing Flurriane, or Ales misses Paradox Your Mom, it still gives me goosebumps thinking about what could and probably has been hit somewhere else in the world.
We hardly ever get to hear what Vasek is trying at the moment, new sets he is developing, so really these kinds of vids are the only chance to see what these things look like.
I can see what you mean though, seeing stuff before its actually been done kind of ruins the 'shock and awe' effect of stuff when its sealed on tape.
Personally though i like to see the best players doing anything. even eating lunch or something :P

However i couldnt really watch a video of an intermediate player trying Nemesis Swirl and the-ing 4 of 5 dexes over and over

Well, it came out more heated because I had just gotten done watching a few videos and I was annoyed.

You know it's one thing to have a shot of something being almost hit, but lately it seems like a bunch of online vids have been highlighting too many missed tricks as though they are special.

I guess it's really just personal preference. When I saw Vasek's attempt at Phasing Flurricane I felt let down by the video maker. Especially when that video had the first 3 moves Vasek attempted as either totally missed or the'd. Then I saw something similar in another video, not only of Vasek, but of others as well.

Nope! My torques still suck, though I did gain an understanding of how they work. Brian gave me some pointers on torque, and then I hit toe torque first try. Not first try ever, first try after actually knowing what I was doing.

Then I hit Porque first try.

Then Shawn, this guy from Edmonton who doesn't kick anymore (Guy with the fro, for those who attended the tourney), he says sarcastically, "Oh yeah? Duck it."

So I tried and it bounced off my heel on the osis.

He said, "That's it, I quit footbag." :)

I haven't come that close since...though I haven't really worked on torques at ALL.

I don't mind seeing missed tricks occasionally - but most of the time I find them boring. Seeing Johnny Murphey foot alpine matador>69 impressed me, as did seeing Vasek foot monatge>spinning ducking superfly>ganstaparty. But I can't really think of anything else that has impressed me. I think it depends how close the person gets. Stuff like Vasek trying phasing flurricane and double spinning scorpion's tail are broing because he's not really close to those moves. If the dexes were clean and the bag touched his foot I would be interested.

I, for one, love to see trick attempts from the big names. I really don't care if the bag drops. If I see Allan try triple inspinning osis and see the bag drop half an inch next to his foot that's in osis position, I'll be impressed. Granted, I'll be more impressed if he DID land it, but I'd think "hey! since when was triple inspinning even deamed possible???".

And then I'd go out and try something, maybe I'd throw in a couple of double inspinning attempts for example.

I remember when Ryan came to Paris, back when my average string length was 4 tiltless and my big trick was side walk, we filmed a 2h shred and what impressed me the most in the footage was not all the 40 contact guiltless runs he'd throw down one after the other but a couple of symposium reversius attempts he made. He didn't land them, dexes weren't deep but I was floored.

Then again, maybe that's just me.
