The Naming Committee
The Naming Committee
I propose we establish a means to finalize naming issues and the bestowing of names to certain/new moves. Sometimes I just feel like the universe would be balanced if a move were named appropriately. Don't we all love when their is a group of like moves that have like names? This trend should be followed as much as possible.
There have also been problems in the past with naming such as:
Dyno: originally gyro swirl?? Most people think of it as reverse blender.
Dimwalk: originally the name for quantum butterfly, named after Dimitri Kavros, but now ubiquitously used for pixie butterfly.
Double Legover: Huge mistake and very confusing. Clearly this should have been the name for set>out-in>same out-in>same toe.
There are also multiple names for the same move circulating, maybe there could be a way to discontinue one of the two.
Alpine atomsmasher: known as rasmus and something else
Spinning drifter: known as void and something else
There are more
Here are some interesting suggestions for some move names...
gyro flail: little orange
terraging ss legover: columbus
frantic down double down: mona lisa
Nick and I were watching Seb try that last move and Nick said jokingly it should be called mona lisa. WHen I heard that I knew in my heart that it must be so. Even if I have to hit it first to get rights to it...though I'm sure either Seb or someone else has hit it by now. THink about it, the rewind of that move is clownface, what more appropriate name than mona lisa is there?
IT MUST BE SO!
Sometimes I'll be vegging somewhere and I'll think of a word or hear a word and think 'that should be a footbag move'
Of course we must moderate ourselves severly, naming is meant to simplify things not complicate them. Sometimes move names are required, and other times they are not.
Here are some examples:
You have massacre and voodoo, but there are two other moves that are possible in this group that SHOULD be named.
1) downtime backside blizzard
2) downtime witchdoctor
Those moves are too unlike their set version to be associated with them. They are core moves and should have a name.
Another example: You have torquescrew, which is a torque ending on a reverse blender. Torque blender needs to be named (thumbtack just came to mind randomly), as does flux blender and flux rev blender.
Instances where names aren't required are for most variations of set moves. Like if you have a set and a move its easy enough to name the set and specify ss if necessary.
Example:
pixie clipper
pixie same clipper
atomic torquescrew
tapping torquescrew
Naming each and every variation would bog us down immensely, especially those of us already trying to remember shit for school.
Then again if someone hits something like sailing massacre naming rights are obviously earned.
It's funny because I remember back in the old days when there was only the footbag.org mailing list there was this guy Dylan Livingston that made a move list and I have a suspicion many names were just made up on the spot by him...curious thought. He's disappeared off the face of the earth since then...where are you Dr. Livingstone!!!?
Our sport is still evolving, we must care tenderly for it so our grandchildren can compete in the olympics and the announcers aren't arguing about what move is what.
Fuck would I love to be a footbag announcer.
'look at the form on that superfly!'
'the judges will definitely deduct points for that sloppiness'
Whew, I'm all out of breath.

This is a topic that has been brought up tons of times in the old 'concepts' forum, but I think this thread is a great idea. We need to seriously look at and standardize how we name moves. We should all throw our ideas onto the table.
I like where you're going with this... here's what I propose:
Firstly, we need to distinguish between 'nicknames' and 'technical' names. If we tried to establish a set of rules for naming tricks, then we would have to throw out most of the cool names we have grown to love.
That said, I think that whoever first hits a trick should be able to give it a nickname. They should be free to call it whatever they want. However, its technical name should somehow be decided based on its components; it will be absolute and there will be no room for its technical name to vary the slightest bit.
Here's a rough idea of how I think this would work. The technical name is composed of groups such as Uptime, Midtime, and Downtime. Each unique group has only ONE name: for exampe, the downtime group >>in[dex]>same clip[xbd][del] is called 'drifter', NOT 'miraging same clipper'. The uptime group set>same in[dex]>op out[dex]>> is called 'sailing', NOT 'pixie atomic'. Then Midtime would be stuff that doesn't fit into either of those segments, like ducking or spinning.
Each technical name would be "built" like so: (Uptime)+(Midtime)+(Downtime), and each unique group would have one name and one name only.
Here's an example of what I mean:
the technical name for toe>same in>op out>>duck>>op in>same osis is "sailing ducking blender", and not pixie atomic ducking whirling osis or anything else. There are 3 distinct parts to the technical name (sailing)+(ducking)+(blender).
These are just my thoughts and it's very rough-hewn, but I think something like this could work. In any case, the technical definition of every move really needs to fit some universal set of rules.

This is all well and good, but untill someone from the official IFPA freestyle commitee steps in, it won't go anywhere.
hint: a better idea to get things rolling would be to get someone involded in modified and more specificly this thread appointed to the IFPA freestyle committee.
The ideas in this thread are all good, as were a lot of the on,es discussed throughout the years in simiular threads. But they didn't get anywhere as they were totally ignored by the governing bodies of our sport...

Not only that but people would rather talk about penises in Buda's Best and killer
I guess I was just wasting my breath. And the IFPA doesn't make things official, we do. Besides aren't most of us members anyway? We ARE the largest body of freestylers in one place, WE have authority to make footbag reality, period.
If we all say something is something, the rest will follow.

First we take over the IFPA by having respected modified members run for positions
Sounds like a plan, I'm in... we need one person from every country on modified to run for leader of there respective country...and then we take over... THE WORLD!!!!
But yeh james does bring up a good point, that modified does have lots of power in the footbag community. Granted I am not nearly knowledge able enough in footbag to decide about such issues as he brought up...

Like all you guys said, modified, I noticed has a$#!tload of freestylers. Tom mentioned that we have the power of sway. If we have this much power, we shouldn't trash it. Another guy said that members should go in from other countries... I like it.. like a Jedi council of footbag. KICKASS! This should seriously be taken more seriously. Get the Administrators to do something about this or something

Forget the IFPA, we can make changes ourselves. We simply have a vote on an issue, then when it's decided, put in practice. There's enough of us to independantly make changes in our sport. It happens unwittingly anyways, but we can take it to the next level and actively shape our sport for the better.
We shouldn't sit around and wait for the IFPA or try voting members from different countries...we're all HERE anyway!
First issue: proposition of names for dt backside blizzard and dt witchdoctor
I was thinking something like shaman for the first one because it goes with voodoo. Maybe slaughter for the second one to go with massacre.

Well, you see those two moves are downtime moves. That means they are CORE moves. Core moves should always be named.
They aren't in common practice because people don't think of them, but if we call attention to them maybe that will change.
Besides, I've seen the first one hit (and hit it myself) by many different players, and the second is simply too cool to pass up.
Commonality is boring, we need to avoid staleness. I will purposely throw those moves in my next session, is that good enough?

Witchdoctor is not an appropriate discriptor for that move. Witchdoctor is a combination of move and a set. Reverse miraging symp mirage is a move in itself. It deserves to be distinguished.
Has reverse miraging symp mirage been hit?? You probably have Chris, but if it hasn't (simply because no one thought of it no doubt...it's not that hard) I'm going to hit it on Thursday and call it slaughter.
I wasn't proposing we rename double legover, that name is already too ingrained, I was just using it as an example to be avoided in the future. I like the idea of calling legovers 'switch' and it does make more sense, but then again legover itself has been around so long that I don't think it would be useful or possible to change. I'm thinking more for things that are currently under debate and as yet unnamed.
