advice: learning new tricks

Post by DoctorJay »

-What is your way to learn a new trick ?

In my opinion the amount of time you need to learn a new trick can vary enormously.
Of course there are your motoric skills which is one , maybe the main, factor of this procedure, but another is the way you try to learn it.

-So what is your way to learn a move?

I came to this question because I was trying to hit torque for 6 month I guess, and I am sure that I wouldn't hit it in six month, too, without the hint from Jeremy that I should keep my knees together as much as possible.

Thanks so much for that !

-How much time do you invest into research and how often do you retry the move until you change anything?

-Do you practice without a bag ?
-When do you put it into a string ( at what "hit- ratio")?

There are so many opportunities in the process to learn a trick , but which one is the most effective for you?

Thanks for your answers , I 'll bet that every player will be very thankful for your detailed answer.

I start trying the trick how my body first feels it wants to do it naturally.

From there either it will work or it won't (obviously) and so I start tweaking my technique.

Shifting my weight differently, going at t a different speed, having my legs in different positions and so on.

Each time I try the trick I try to think about what in that attempt felt right and what felt wrong and do my best to remember to do the right ones until I find the combo that makes it all work.

I think the most important part is actually stopping and thinking why a trick went wrong or how you could improve on it.

I always try trick with both sides. Comparing them I get the right feeling how the trick is done and then do it with both sides the way that feels the best.
With this technique both sides should have pretty equal components for the trick, or doing it with same style both sides is hard or impossible.

Both sideness rulez! :P

This is very interesting topic and I have thought about it a lot. I think that I have rather good motoric skills. (I used to do gymnastics for 7 years) Even so, I need lots of time to master a trick to do it in middle of the string or even to do it very first time, even if it would feel very right and it would have been very close. So in my opinion hitting a new trick needs motoric skills, right technique (right timing, legs positions etc..) and lots of patience. Also one should have worked basics well(my stumbling block) and of course the components needed for that trick. Also some tricks come more naturally.

Hope someone tells us the perfect way to train so it would be more easier.

I think the fastest way to learn a new move is by learning from someone
who can already hit this trick. I never came close to Torque until I
shredded with a guy who told me some basic hints about it - and then
it just came to me. However, the keep your knees together hint is a
good one! Must try that.

I learn tricks like this: try>watch videos>research forum>repeat.

- I definatly go for research - hear other players what their trick is.
- Both sides - always.
- The stuff mentioned above and Experimenting with set height. (I cracked Pdx Eggbeater by setting lower then I thought I should)
- Get others oppinion: IS IT CLEAN?!
- I always try new moves out of a trick - clipper-set tricks out of butterfly, and toe set moves out of, well, a toe stall, but in motion.
- I either do a "trainning schedule": ex. 5x spinning butterfly bs, 3x pdx whirl bs, 5x spinning butterfly bs, 3x barfly bs - or I school with another person - then you get 2 trys each side then pass - this way schooling become less boring.
- Learn the componets first - I see no reason trying to hit Gyro DLO if you can't do a leg-over, a mirage and a spin...

On top of this I usually school moves a lot for a couple of weeks and get a feeling for them, then I "forget" them for a couple of weeks and when I return, I'm able to do them better. After repeating this patern X number of times, I usually have the move dialed.
