Ok, so (for most of us) we're coming up to Christmas (X-mas if you're lazy) and a number of other religous hollidays that are celebrated by most - even the non-religous.
And, well using my own situation, I'll cut to the chase...


I HATE CHRISTMAS!

Call me a Grinch, a Screwge, call me what ever the fuck you want... I don't care. It's all a commercialist scam, where even religion has sold out!
Now, the thing is, I'm not a christian, so technically I shouldn't even be celebrating Christmas anyway, because isn't it all about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ?

Well, I'm sure that was the point at one time. Now it's all about presents, although it's supposed to be about being with your loved ones and paying thanks for all they've done for you and stuff.

So, here's my proposition:

Strip it all down to what it's really about. Not trees, not X-mas cards and rapping paper, not decorating your house in 10 000 000+ lights...

So I propose:

Thankyou Day


What is thankyou day? Well, for me it occurs on December 25, and is all about saying thankyou to my friends and family. To do this, I get them gifts that I rap in *normal* rapping paper, and I give them a message of love and thanks in a *standard* Thankyou card. Going back to the basics, will make the whole event so much more affordable for me and everyone.

This way, I don't have to bow down to the overcomercialism of Christmas. I steer clear of anything christmasy, including Santa!


So help me start a movement and help me keep it real.

i celebrate christmas as a time for family/religion...we light candles every sunday in december up untill xmas,and then go to midnight and morning service etc.It's Jesus's birthday and i can just miss it becuase i am a semi strong Christian...plus i mean come on,you get stuff!

I agree Christmas has become Americanized aka capitalized. All things are X-Mas, Skateboarding, even Footbagging eventually. You can't stop it all you ca do is resist.

A lto of Christians see X-mas time and have one goal, get a whole fucking lot of materialistic shit. While I too like materialistic shit as we all do, Christians need to remember to also give back. Soup kitchens love to see people especially in the cold months of December.

and yes it is STILL the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, our lord and savior, died on the cross to save us....any of that sound familiar? kind of an important figure...so yeah you can try this little "movement idea" but I dont know how many athiest Christmas haters out there you'll find.

It's more like Coca-Cola Day. The stereotypical Christmas image was totally hijacked and recreated by Coke.

Haddon Sundblom was a famous illustrator in the early to mid 1900's. He was hired by the Coca Cola company to do several illustrations for their Christmas campaigns from 1931 to 1964. Although similar images of a fat jolly human looking Santa were made decades before Coke comissioned Sundblom, Haddon really popularized the modern image of Santa because his art became pop icons.

He also went to school at the American Academy of Art (me too!) and the Art Institue of Chicago. He painted the portrait of the Quaker Oats guy and I want to say he also did the illustration of the original Gerber baby but I 'm not sure of it.

What I want to know is who the hell first painted Jesus with long straight blonde hair and blue eyes.

In Japan, Christmas isn`t really celebrated, since it`s not a Christian country (less than 1% Christian). Still, stores play christmas music, and sometimes put up christmas trees/lights. Mostly though, Christmas Eve is a special day for you to spend with your girlfriend. Lots of Japanese couples celebrate Christmas Eve as a romantic holiday.

Interesting tidbit: after World War II, Japan adapted lots of American traditions, and absorbed lots of American Culture. One department store in Tokyo famously put up a display of a smiling Santa Claus... hanging on a cross. I think there were post-cards of this image made as well, and the originals sell on e-bay for big money. Just a funny example of cultural misunderstanding.

As for myself, I`m spending Christmas in New Zealand with a footbagger (Floyd) and his family. I`m bringing them lots of tequila and some Japanese stuff. :)

Eh, no thanks. Substituting one holiday for another about the same thing under a different name seems pretty pointless to me. I'm not Christian and I celebrate Christmas. The idea of Santa is fun for kids, atleast he was for me. My family doesn't even buy a lot of gifts anymore, but we still get together and have dinner and whatnot with a tree because it's nice and really not that much trouble.

I say do whatever you want though you shouldn't really feel strongly either way. If you do, you need to lighten up because you take this holiday too seriously.

lotsa hardcore Jews have Christmas trees even. its just the thing to do at Christmas. there are like 3 different kinds of people around Christmas...the kind who celebrate it, focusing (one s? two ss's?) completely on Jesus etc, the kind who celebrate the Christmas thats all about the tree and the presents, and the kind who dont celebrate it for whatever reason. the people who just celebrate it are kinda the nicest people to be around in the Christmas season...

I'm in more or less complete agreement, except that I refer to the whole of December as Corrospondance Month, and use it as a chance to get in touch with friends and family who I haven't seen in a while.
