I`m actually pretty excited to watch it. The re-alignment of the divisions and all the player trades in the offseason really make it feel like a fresh start.
Here are some of my random thoughts.
Shaq leaving LA
Kinda mixed about this. One thing I enjoy more than rooting for my favorite teams, is rooting against teams I hate. Historically this has meant rooting against the Lakers and against the Knicks. Watching the Lakers get humiliated in last year`s finals was great. Now that the Lakers are no more though... it`s harder to get excited, since there`s no `bad guy` in the league. I am excited to see what Shaq does this year though, since he`s lost 30 pounds and is angry about being underappreciated in LA. It should be fun to see him play with no mercy, to get revenge on the management in LA
Knicks
I`ve disliked the Knicks since... man way back. I always thought they were overpaid, underachieving assholes with bad attitude. I took a lot of pleasure in seeing them suck real hard the last few seasons. But since Isaiah came on board, he has traded almost everybody. The Knicks now aren`t a team I recognize, and therefore I have trouble really hating them. Plus, Stephon Marbury and Lenny Wilkens are both from the city, so I dig that. I also like Kurt Thomas, and am excited about what Jamal Crawford will do. I definitely don`t hate the Knicks anymore, and maybe I`ll even root for them. Who`d a thought that would happen?
Suns
My folks moved to Arizona a couple years ago, which is kinda sad for me on a few levels. Upon moving there, they promptly mailed me a Phoenix Suns t-shirt, which I wasn`t overjoyed about, mostly cause the Suns really sucked back then. But since then, they acquired my second favorite Point Guard in the league, Steve Nash, and they also picked up Tabuse Yuta (the first Japanese person to play in the NBA), which is pretty exciting. Throw in a maturing Amare, and Quentin Richardson, and now I`ve got a `hometown` team I can root for!
Mavericks
The Mavericks were my favorite team in the NBA for the last 4 years or so, but this year they`ve lost me. It started when they traded my favorite player on the roster, Nick Van Exel, a couple seasons back. But then losing my second favorite player, Steve Nash this last summer... I dunno. I like irk Nowitzki, and Marquis Daniels has tons of potential, but I`m just not that excited about this years roster. I wish they had kept Antoine Walker. The Mavs finally have a true center... but I kinda feel like all the excitement has left the team.
Nets
No JKidd for who knows how long. For me the Nets were all about Kidd throwing alley-oops to Kenyon Martin. When they lost Kenyon to Denver, it was like they had a heart transplant. But after taking out the heart... they were promised to get the components of a heart delivered in the future? Whatever man, shitty management, injuries galore, and the players are complaining like children.
Magic.
Now this could be exciting. Forget Dwight Howard, forget Franchise playing in a free-er system than Van Gundy, hell, even forget Jameer Nelson (though I think the league is sleeping on him). I`m excited at Grant Hill making a comeback after he REALLY let his ankle heal up. That could be freaking huge. I really want to see that.
Pistons.
Teamwork, yadda yadda, Rip Hamilton is the next Reggie Miller (which I disagree with) yadda yadda, antonio mcdyess is healthy now, yadda yadda,they have a target on their back now, blah blah. Forget all that. I`m hoping the Pistons do well just because of Rasheed Wallace. I look at Rasheed Wallace as a player who always had great potential, but who let his mental game hold him back. Since going to Detroit, it really seems like he has gotten past his temper, and has focussed on goals and winning. As a footbagger who occasionally gets frustrated with my own game, I take a lot of inspiration from him. Plus, his news conferences are usually hilarious.
We`ll see how the season goes, but at the very least, I`m happy that I can say I am excited to watch this year.

Still haven`t been able to see any NBA games yet (though Japanese news shows Tabuse Yuta highlights). I follow the games online everyday though.
I really want to see a LeBron or Dwyane Wade game. I`m mostly happy to hear though that Steve Nash is off to a good start with Phoenix. I think with Nash at the point, Amare is going to really explode. Nash is leading the league in assists per game now, and had 17 (!) assists in the last game.
I agree that the Rockets could be fun to watch. T-Mac is injured now though... but I agree about Yao having lots of potential still.

Holy shit, I just read about the suspensions Stern handed out for the Pistons-Pacers fight. Artest is banned for the entire season! 
Jermain O`Neal and Stephen Jackson are also gone for like 30 games apiece! That`s incredible! What I think is most interesting, is the effect this will have on the team next year. Does anybody remember when David Robinson was injured one year, and the Spurs went from the playoffs to the top lottery pick? And then they picked Tim Duncan, and David Robinson healed, and they got 2 championships within 5 years! Now, the Pacers had been projected to take 1st or 2nd in the East, but with these new suspensions, I wouldn`t be surprised to see them in the lottery over the summer, which could make them even stronger next year. OK, this is all hypothetical babbling... I`m still in shock over how strong the suspensions are though.
Anyway, on a more positive note: the season is getting underway, so I thought it would be fun to look at some predictions/hopes I had that are coming along.

Anyway, the all-star break is still like 2 months away, but it seems like All-star balloting has been going on forever.
Here are some of my thoughts on all-star voting.
1. People shouldn`t vote until really close to the deadline. Some positions (like, centers in the East) are relatively easy to figure out. You`re either gonna end up writing Ben Wallace, or Shaq. But other positions, notably Western Forwards, are overloaded with all-star talent. Its not fair to vote for people now, when a bunch of players in the same conference at the same position are having relatively equal years. If Dirk Nowitzki goes on a tear right before the break, then he should get my vote. But frankly, deciding between him, Amare, Tim Duncan and a couple others is really hard to do just yet.
2. Anybody can put up numbers and make highlight reels. But do those numbers and highlights help your team win? I think that making the All-star team should be at least tangentially related to your team having a winning record. I wasn`t very impressed by T-Mac being the scoring champ the last 2 seasons, cause frankly, the Magic sucked ass. Sam Cassell was the best point guard in the West last conference, but the fans would have never put him on the team, even though the Wolves had the best record. That`s crap.
I also think people shouldn`t vote for players who have been out with injuries for extended periods of time. Jason Kidd is an incredible point guard, and definitely was an all-star the last few years. But this year, his team has been awful without him, he`s only played limited minutes in a few games, and he`s not back at full strength. Voting for all-stars isn`t about potential, and shouldn`t be a popularity contest. Why Ron Artest is even on the ballot is a mystery to me. Andrei Kirilenko was having a clear All-Star year, but his injuries have taken him out for a real long time, and his team sucks now because of it. Them`s the breaks.
Here`s a list of people who I am personally leaning towards voting for: West: Steve Nash, Ray Allen (no, I don`t like him, but he deserves to be there), Amare Stoudamire, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki (see what a glut of awesome forwards the west has?!), and Shawn Marion. The center position has nobody notable, considering that Tim Duncan is in the forward category, and Shaq is back east. I dont think Yao is playing very well this season.
East LeBron James, Grant Hill, Dwyane Wade (not a typo), Allen Iverson (but his team needs to do better), Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Shaq, Ben Wallace, and I`m probably forgetting someone.
Personally, I really hope that Ray Allen makes the team. He`s not a fan favorite, but he`s the best player on a team which has one of the best records in the league, and he`s having a career year. I hope he`s rewarded for his efforts, instead of being knocked out in the voting by somebody who is flashier and better but is on a team which is doing badly (like, Kobe).

Yeah, I`d say that the Sonics are easily the biggest surprise this season. The Clippers also are off to a very surprising start. I don`t think many people expected the Suns to do this well, but most people expected them to be WAY better than last year, so their success isn`t as surprising.

I`m sorry, but T-Mac is straight up NOT having an all-star season. He`s had 2 incredible games, one againt Dallas, and one against the Spurs, but you shouldn`t become an all-star starter because of 2 games, when the rest of the time you have been playing mediocre, and your team is underachieving.
If Steve Nash doesn`t start in the West, it will be a fucking travesty.
Other idiotic, senseless results: Carmelo has more votes than Amare. OK, Carmelo has improved lately, but lets not forget that he had a horrible start. Let`s also not forget that Amare is the leading scorer on the team with the BEST record in the league. Let`s also not forget that Amare was TWICE named player of the week in the west. The forward position in the west is overloaded with talent, so if Amare isn`t a starter, I won`t be upset. Duncan, Garnett, and Nowitzki all have legitimate claims. But Carmelo straight up doesnt deserve to be there, especially not over Amare.
On the whole, the voting for guards in the East looks about right to me. But what`s up with Jason Kidd having nearly twice as many votes as Chauncey? What`s up with Jason Kidd having any votes at all? By my calculation, Jason Kidd has one mother, and 2 grandmothers. But that`s just 3 votes! Where did the other 190.605 votes come from? When healthy, JKidd is probably the best point guard in the league. But he`s not healthy. He hasn`t played most of the games this season. And his team is losing. There is no way to justify a vote for Jason Kidd.
Personally, I don`t think people should be voting this early. But if they do, they should be forced to look at the stats for the people they vote for. Specifically, the records of their teams, whether the player is injured seriously, and how many games they have played.
Charles Barkeley is right. Fans shouldn`t be allowed to vote.

Vince Carter got traded to the Nets! While he and Jason Kidd aren`t healthy yet, that`s still pretty exciting. Imagine a healthy Kidd, Carter, and Richard Jefferson on the same team. That could be a lot of fun to watch. It`s also good to see the management admit they fuct up by trading away K-Mart, and to see them trying to do something to get the fans back, and become a contender again.

it was a throwback game. They were playing the Wizards, who used to be the Baltimore Bullets. The Wizards wore their old Red Bullets uniforms, and the Lakers wore their old Minnesota Lakers uniforms. No its not permanent, just a throwback jersey game.

Hornets: Welcome back Baron Davis! When Baron is healthy, I really think he is one of the best point guards out there. I feel bad for Hornet fans this season, because the Hornets really aren`t as bad a team as their record would indicate. Injuries just kicked their ass this year. They should take some comfort and think about that year when David Robinson was out for the season with an injury, the Spurs won the lottery because of it, drafted Tim Duncan, and then won 2 championships in 5 years. Hell, Orlando didn`t have good injury excuses last year, finished last, and got some nice stuff in the lottery.
Suns: I remember a couple years back when Amare was still developing, and prescient commentators wondered what he`d be capable of with a point guard who could feed him. Stephon Marbury was definitely not that point guard. At the time, I figured that Jason Kidd could turn Amare into a machine. But I guess Steve Nash is that point guard. Best record in the league, and on pace to win the championship. Still, I am a bit nervous considering how like 90% of their productivity comes from their starters. Just a couple injuries could really derail them, unlike a deeper team.
Scoring champ: It`s still early in the season, but it`s obvious Kobe wants this title badly. I think he thinks it would somehow prove that he is better without Shaq. Personally, I think the only way Kobe can prove he is better without Shaq, is to win a ring without him. The scoring title doesn`t really count for shit. That said, I`d love to see AI win it. Only one man has ever led the league in assists and points, and for a while I figured the only person who could do it again would be AI. Now, I think that LeBron is the most likely to pull that off, but who knows. There may very well never be another Tiny Archibald.
Spurs: Yeah, their record may not be nearly as surprising or flashy as Phoenix, Miami or Seattle. Their success isn`t as interesting a read. But don`t sleep on them, because they still have one of the best shots at the trophy this season. Charles Barkeley once said that nothing matters until the playoffs, and the Lakers kinda proved that a couple years in a row. I wouldn`t be surprised to see the Spurs win the title, even if they had a low seed.
Nets It was nice to see the management get Vinsanity, just to reassure the fans that its not just a business to them, and they want to win. But Richard Jefferson going out for the season is freaking huge. If the Nets make it to the playoffs without Jefferson, that just says how weak the East is. Even with how weak the East is, I don`t see the Nets making it to the playoffs without Jefferson.
Stephon Marbury claiming he is the best pg in the league I think Shaq got this one right: Starbury is the best scoring PG in the league, but not the best PG in the league. Right now, Nash is probably the best, since he is the best at making his teammates better and running the offense. Shout out to Brevin Knight, too bad his team is so young and inexperienced.
Cavs Yeah yeah, LBJ is entertaining and clearly the main show. But respect needs to go to Drew Gooden, who incredibly is actually filling Boozer`s shoes. And lets not overlook how much better Lebron is when he can play the 2 as opposed to the one. That wasnt the case before jeff McInnis. And since Ilgauskas only faces one other true center in the division, it`s not that surprising to me to see the Cavaliers doing so well.

But don`t sleep on them, because they still have one of the best shots at the trophy this season. Charles Barkeley once said that nothing matters until the playoffs, and the Lakers kinda proved that a couple years in a row. I wouldn`t be surprised to see the Spurs win the title, even if they had a low seed.
Nets It was nice to see the management get Vinsanity, just to reassure the fans that its not just a business to them, and they want to win. But Richard Jefferson going out for the season is freaking huge. If the Nets make it to the playoffs without Jefferson, that just says how weak the East is. Even with how weak the East is, I don`t see the Nets making it to the playoffs without Jefferson.
Stephon Marbury claiming he is the best pg in the league I think Shaq got this one right: Starbury is the best scoring PG in the league, but not the best PG in the league. Right now, Nash is probably the best, since he is the best at making his teammates better and running the offense. Shout out to Brevin Knight, too bad his team is so young and inexperienced.
Cavs Yeah yeah, LBJ is entertaining and clearly the main show. But respect needs to go to Drew Gooden, who incredibly is actually filling Boozer`s shoes. And lets not overlook how much better Lebron is when he can play the 2 as opposed to the one. That wasnt the case before jeff McInnis. And since Ilgauskas only faces one other true center in the division, it`s not that surprising to me to see the Cavaliers doing so well.

When the Suns started the season 31-4, Nash got lots of props. But I don`t think anyone realized how key he was to the team. The Suns have lost 5 straight, and the last 4 are clearly cause Nash has been injured. They used to have the best point average in the league, but Nash goes out, and they go from a league best 110 or so, to a full 20 points less. In one of the Nash-less games last week, the Suns only had 11 assists for the entire game. Nash averages 11 assists! I think that the last 5 games, and how bad the Suns have played in Nash`s absence has everybody realizing how valuable he really is to the team. Since I last wrote, the Spurs have gotten the best record. I still think they could take it all. I`d much prefer to see the Suns win it, mostly because I think they are more of a team, and I prefer fast-break basketball to zoney, plodding slow halfcourt basketball. Scottie Pippen thinks the Sonics will win the West though, cause they shoot the best, and have a couple big bodies to slow down Tim Duncan. I guess implied but unsaid in that statement, is that those big bodies could also be used agains Shaq if they took the East.
Oh yeah, and it`s nice to see Jason Kidd back near full strength, and meshing with Vince Carter.
