Ok, I'm not sure what FTP is and I thought you guys could help me out.
So what I do understand is that FTP server is a server(computer connected to the Internet) from which, using the File Transfer Protocol, I can download files. I can also uplod stuff there so that other people could reach it.
My question is:
Can I become a FTP-server myself so that all the data is stored on my laptop which I never turn off? If yes, how to do it?
That would be cool cause I would be able to share music/videos with my friends.
FTP is an option available from Unix. Unix is what's called a shell I believe, or maybe it has multiple shells. I either case, it's kind of like MS Dos on your laptop if you have windows but unix is on a much larger scale, like internationally. I have to navigate my way through unix for certain things about school. But I know that the root server of unix in my school is about a dozen beastly super computers that can transfer millions of files at a time. (and most of them are named homework.doc haha) Anyway, I don't think that a laptop has the capabilities to become a FTP server. Sorry. There are definitely other ways that I don't know about. Or you could mooch off of a Unix server if you find one, like I do.

You can indeed turn your laptop into an ftp server, if you have a continuous internet connection. In fact, a few days ago when you asked for the shred messegers vid, I considered setting up an ftp server on my computer in order to share my directory of footbag videos. Be warned though, if you're doing a lot of uploading through your ftp, it will slow down your internet connection.
I've had good experiences with the serv-u ftp server program (www.serv-u.com) and the bulletproof server program (www.bpftpserver.com).
you might also consider installing vnc on your computer then u could simply login in to your comp through any web browswer from any other computer in the world, it would be as if you were sitting right in front of it using it yourself
btw: unix is an operating system, msdos was an operating system and now is a program that sits on top of windows, also i have had success with servu ftp before if that helps
i used to host an ftp server on my comp. and with the correct username/password, you could go up an extra directory and get to all my files, if needed. i stopped doing that cause i was running windows, and windows isn't very secure.
