i disagree about walkovers. i don't know why i just don't think they are really all that cool. when i first saw vasek do it out of double blender i thought it was neat, but after that i just kinda get bored with them. i also disagree about regular swirl not being in. I think any form of swirl is in. especially linking forward and backward. torques and drifters will always be in. as will any hard low add move because it's just plain respectable. and gyro. i <3 gyro.

Pheonix has always been, and always will be lame.
I don't think pheonix is lame. If you hit it midstring, out of and into hard links and BSOS, it can be pretty sweet.
Just because a lot of people can hit it, doesn't mean it's a shitty move.

I totally agree, phoenix was my first 5, and I still use it often, and it still feels really good to hit it smooth. Jim Penske has a part in Lovely CSS5 where he hits phoenix bsos mixed with blurry whirls and other quick moves and it looked very, very impressive, nothing lame about it

Personally, Phoenix and PS whirl are only cool to me if they are done on the flipside. Not BSOS, just flipside.

I think some people have misunderstood this topic. It's about fads - things that become really popular and then not so popular. That doesn't mean they are hated - just that they aren't a move everybody is trying to hit and get excited when they see on video anymore. Blurriest is a great example of a non fad move - in the time I've been playing footbag it hasn't really changed in popularity at all.

While PS Whirl and Whirlwind are clearly fad moves - when I started playing Ryan was doing them lots and they had so much respect - you'd watch a movie with Ryan hitting whirlwind midstring and it would be amazing. Now people complain all the time about too many pdx whirls and symp whirls - and they have no where near the respect that they once had. That's not to say anybody disrepects those moves - I'm sure everybody would still give you plenty of props if you hit a whirlwind - it's just doesn't have the same popularity that it once had.

A move that has always been popular cannot be a fad - that's a contradiction.

edit: From talking to Lynton - I'd say that scorpion's tail and mobius were probably the big fad tricks before PS whirl moves - especially that combo - scorpion's tail>mobius - I think for a while that was seen as maybe the best two move combo in footbag - or at least the most stylish. I'm not too sure though because it's all before my time. Maybe some of the older players can tell us what was really popular before the Ryan era.

edit 2: Going tripless was definitly a fad for a while!! These days people don't comment so much if they see a long tripless run - but I think around 99 it was defintily the "in" thing to be aiming for. At one stage I think Scott Davidson even said that he was only going to play tripless - and of course Ryan made it really popular too.

Going tripless is less of a fad then a goal for those who are not there yet. I would love to play a completely tripless game! It would only be a fad if people were neglecting solid three adds like whirl, smear and ducking/diving clipper to say they were playing tripless.

if you watch Raw shred it's way obvious that downtime double dexes were WAY more in then they are now. This of course makes sense because it was before the main use of a set. After the invention of the set, that fad died pretty quick and lead way to more modern day shred. not that double dexes have been thrown out, but if you go watch that video (or even modern day kenny shults) you'll see crazy single leg downtime double dexes.

At my first worlds in '99 I remember Greg Nelson commenting on how ripwalk was 'like the most popular move'
That year Ellis and Dave came out with Sultans of Shred and it was all about long (20+) strings.

I thinks fads in footbag are silly. It's easy to follow what's popular it's difficult to be innovative and creative. Even Vasek's style is derivative of Ryan's. Although he's definitely taken it a whole new level.

I don't think that's the case with Vasek's style any more. I think the stuff you see him hitting these days is definitly completely his own style. Compare Vaseks sick 3 at worlds 2003 to his sick 3 at Euros 2004.

I think fads in footbag push the level. When every body are collectively working on the same kind of thing improvements on technique and style are inevitable. When only a few people are working on it - it is much harder to improve.

Tripless was definitly a fad. - It might be a goal for some people now - but it isn't seen in anything near the same light that it was once - fearless maybe has replaced it to some degree - but also I don't think people care as much about adds now as they used to - the "fuck adds" movement is definitly getting bigger.

Dare I say it - but I think nemesis is definitly a very in move at the moment - although I think it's starting to lose popularity - mainly because more people are hitting it - so it's losing it's "wow that's hard only so many people" can hit it kind of status. I think by the end of next year it won't have the respect it has now (although obviously it will still be viewed as a hard move and people will still get heaps of props for hitting it)

I think that Butterfly Swirl out of some set is in, and many people are doing barfly swirls now...
