Footbag Documentary

I am doing a footbag documentary for a regional video competetion through Boys and Girls Club of America. IN short i would appreciate any help. SOme help being maybe history before Stalberger and Marshall, maybe where it originated and stuff. I would also like any help with actually what i should include. I am pretty bent on including shred, and probally some basics sets and moves. I know a lot of this is covered in Tricks 1 and 2, but part of my project is trying to make it open to any young shredderes also.

Dude. That is where it originated. It is defined as a "Modern American Sport". There was nothing before that.

You might include something along the lines of Takraw (sp?) played in Asia (?) for many centuries (??) before footbag.

But I believe it originated with Stalberger and Marshall. Correct me if I am wrong.

there are sports or past times involving keeping a small object off the ground with your feet on almost every continent - all of which are a lot older than footbag. I don't know enough details - you should do some research.

I remember seeing a presentation on television many years ago, about a game from China called Shuttlecock, which seems to me now to be remarkably similar to footbag. So similar, in fact, that I think we really should be looking these people up, going to their events, playing with them, etc. Anyway, it was not until tonight that I decided to look this up on google, and I found some interesting stuff. They seem to be more into the net version of their game than the freestyle version. There were lots of pictures of net play, but only written mention of freestyle, which they refer to as the "artistic" or "technical" side of the game. In Poland people started to playing something very similar to footbag between I and the II World War. It was called "zoska" and sometimes we still call footbag this way. So, for many polish people footbag doesn't came from US and it isn't originated with Stalberger and Marshall. But anyone know that freestyle and footbag as a high-performance sport came from US.

So... we footbag players, here in Poland, are trying to promote Footbag as a footbag. And we're trying to explain that the sport of footbag and "zoska" have diffrent roots.

could you please outline the primary differences between zoska and freestyle footbag?

I think there's more diffrences than similarites. 'Zoska' it is kicking small usually made of wool ball (footbag) in the circle. You dont need any special equipment to play zoska, no shoes no shorts.. it's just kicking with beer or joint.. In Poland Zoska is identified with hip-hop.. so when you tell somebody that you paly zoska (but you mean footbag) he will think "oooo.. you're kicking that small ball, it's deffinitely not a sport and it's so easy.." sometimes it's very irritating!!
So first and only similarty is Kicking small ball... everything else is different!

Kevin and I were kicking at the university a while ago and for long time this chinese exchange student just watched us. After a while he came over and started asking a bunch of questions. He seemed quite interested in footbag. He then went onto explain how he used to play a game with a some sort of feather ball. We didn't really know what he was talking about at the time. I guess he was talking about shuttlecock. It does seem to be similar in many ways.

I checked club listings on footbag.org and there was only one club listed in china! Over a billion people and only one club! I think we're missing a huge footbag demographic here.... Shuttlecock could definately be the link to bring footbag to china.

I asked some older people, and they said that when they were younger, Zoska was not played with a bag, but with a ball made of lead with feathers sticked in it. And as Hania said it was only cicking in a circle, no tricks.

There already is. I was corresponding in Spanish with a girl from Colombia a little while ago about footbag. They have a pretty sizable club down in Bogota. (and yes, they shred she was hitting stuff like phoenix and torque after 7 or 8 months of play, iirc)

a few months ago at a festival here in seattle i played shuttlecock with a few people from montana. i don't know if they were playing by the official rules or anything but we just tried to keep it off of the ground. it was kind of like a birdie for badmitton but not really. it had a flad weight like thingy on the bottom and some feathers sticking straight up from it. also zoska compared to footag sounds a lot like "hacky sack" compared to footag here in the usa. people frequently think i'm refering to that when i tell them i play footbag and usually it takes them actually seeing some good freestyle to realize a difference.
