high speed chases

Post by shredj »

what do u guys think about high speed chases
should the cops keep chasing the suspect or let them go? because if they let them go then they may save lives that the crazed driver might have killed in a crash but then again if u let them get away u let em get away so its a pretty close call. anyways post wat u think
personally i think the cops should just let them get away

also what are is the law on getting searched? i almost got caught poking smot in the bathroom at a museum last week and they searched me but didnt find it. so what is the law on searching i hear people say they CANT search u and hear people say just the opposite so wuts up with this

I don't really have an opinion on high speed chases - I think there are good arguements on either side - but since I haven't heard of any results from stopping high speed chases - it's hard to know what would be better.

Regarding get searched - I don't know American law. In Australia legally only the police or other such authorised people have the legal right to demand a search so people like security gaurds can't demand a search - they can ban you from the place or not let you enter though. When a policeman searches you I think you can request that a lawyer be present for the search - but that means the police can hold you until the lawyer is contacted and arrives.

I'd like to see the results of a lawsuit against law enforcement over someone getting badly injured during one of these chases.

Actually that has probably happened. If anybody knows of an article on one how about posting it.

I think cops let chases go on to long, they should crash their squad cars into the suspect car until he stops, like GTA3, GTA: Vice City, etc etc.......

High speed chases usually end when the suspect crashes into something or someone. I think if someone robs a bank or DWI then the cops should keep following the guy. If it's a small crime like speeding or running a red light (not that anyone would run away for doing that) then the cops should let the guy go if he loses the cops, instead of calling in a helicopter to find him.

theys hould definetely chase after a guy when he's in a tank. If he's a focus, don't bother. He won't crash that hard. But if an Abrams is cruising down route 27, I think the cops should come

Well the school laws are different than American laws, as far as searching you. I don't remember exactly but I took a quiz on it last year.

High speed chases.... I don't know. I'd say that the cops should keep chasing.

If the cops stopped chasing people then people might always run because they know they can get away... just a thought

i saw a tank in a protest video. it was a 'bring home the troops' video from LA i think. the army showed up in two tanks just to piss off the protesters, and claimed later that it was part of an exercise and that the tank drivers had "gotten lost" - in the middle of LA, in a tank. right.

not sure if the video is still around, but you can find the story here:

Yeah I remember that too!! - It wasn't at a protest or anything - it was just some crazy guy that stole the tank and went for a cruise. As I recall he ran over a couple of cars and traffic light poles (that's the way to run a red light ;) ) - it was pretty crazy. The police couldn't really do anything - and were worried that he'd figure out how to fire the gun too - but he didn't and eventually either gave himself up or the thing ran out of fuel - I can't remember which. I don't think anybody was hurt in the whole thing though - just lots of damage. I don't know if it's what you'd call a "high speed chase" though.

It was in san diego off the 94 just outside my old neighborhood.
I believe he lifted it from the front of the armory and took it through the residential neighborhoods wreaking havoc.

He actually banked the tank in the middle of a freeway divider and got it stuck.

The police fired a shot down into the tank from the top hatch and killed him instantly.
Go out and shred already.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but recent events have changed my opinions...

Recently in a poor suburb in Sydney there were a number of riots after two teenagers were killed as passengers in a stolen car that crashed during a high speed chase. The driver escaped but later gave himself up. The riots started when police in riot gear tried to stop a peaceful memorial to the two teenagers from taking place in the spot where they were killed.

It was later revealed that the police chasing the car new exactly who was in the car and searched the car and bodies before calling an ambulance (similar to the events that caused the last riot in Sydney - police chased a boy on a bike - he crashed and impaled himself on a fence and they searched him before calling an ambulance - even though he had a metal spike sticking through him...)

Having heard arguements from both sides - I think in these situations the police should not chase the car. Considering they knew where the people lived and knew that they were young and inexperienced drivers and had had dealings with them before - I think it's inevitable that such a chase will end with a crash.

I think somebody mentioned it before briefly but basically when a car chase happens there are really only two possibilities - either the car crashes or they get away. A crash obviously means that there is a high chance of injury - not just to driver and occupants but to bystanders and other traffic. People who steal cars should not be punished with death - especially without ever being convicted.

The obvious counter arguement is that the people choose to flee the police - while this is obviously true - the police cannot control what the people do - they can only choose to chase or not to chase - If there is a crash in a police chase I don't think it's fair to blame the police or ask for damages - but equally I think preserving life is more important than catching criminals.

If the person involved is wanted for something serious that could see them deemed a serious threat to society - ie murder - then I think the chase should go ahead. However I don't believe that car theives are a serious threat at all - I think the value of any person - even a theif - is much greater than the value of a car and the risk of damaging both the person and the car is too great.

The fact that in the Sydney case the police knew who the people were makes it even worse - there is a very good chance that the police would easily be able to pick up the joyriders at a later date.

I guess legally there could be issues if a bystander is killed or injured by somebody that the police didn't chase - however such events could easily be legislated against and I think it's less likely that an accident would occur if the driver is not trying to outrun a police car than if they are.

The Fourth Amendment to the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution states:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Go to http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=3405 for more info on your rights before you consent to another search.
