Turkey to EU?

Post by DoctorJay »

What do you think , should Turkey gets the chance to try to get in the EU in 10 or 15 years?

In Germany this topic is much discussed , one reason for that is maybe that lots of (former) Turkish people are living here and their vote is also important for our own parties to get them or otherwise get the vote of the Turkish opponents.
In my opinion Europe expand to fast. Moreover Turkey is not a country which accept Human Rights up to now. Lots of people also told that Turkey could be a economical problem for the whole EU too.
I think Turkey should get the chance but if there is only a small condition which doesn't fit to the EU standards they should not be accepted in 10 years.
In Germany we are afraid of the Islam too , that lots of terrorists could enter when Turkey will be part of the EU and their open borders.

How does this topic effect you and your country?

Hmm, Turkey joining the EU doesn't affect me or my county very much at all i suppose, but i would like to see it happen for three reasons...

1) Seeing as Turkey is now the largest secular islamic state (i think, i'm not sure where to check that sort of fact, but i heard it somewhere) it needs the protection of the EU so that next time a bunch of raghead fundies drops a terror attack on the US, Turkey doesn't get invaded for no reason.

2) Coming into the EU will force Turkey to address some of its more obvious human rights problems.

3) Having an Islamic state wil make the EU seem the more compassionate super power (Ok pretty much anyone seems compassionate compared to the US, but it'll seem more so) and hopefully discourage terrorism against the european countries that are advocating sensible approaches to the "war on terror."

Something i find interesting is that one of the things Turkey will struggle to change so it gains acceptance is its marriage laws which currently allow one man more than one wife. In the EU constitution marriage is enshrined as one man and one woman, this could satrt a whole new topic but i find it interesting is that arguements about marriage don't just occur between different sexual orientations but between cultures aswell.

I would hope that Turkey are not allowed into the EU until they have a good human rights record and a free media. They can be encouraged to improve those things by telling them that they won't be let into the EU until both are improved.

hi !!!!

well well I didn't know that someone is going to post such a topic.

in my opinion Turky should not get to EU in 15 years.
if we look what do they have to do with European culture there is not much.
I live in The Netherlands now and lots of Arabic people and Turkish poeople make a huge mess in this small land.
tring to make up their own rights and not giving a shit even to learn the language.
I'm not agains them but just the fact that Europe for ages is more less a Christian part of the World.

some of you won't agree with me and I would understand that:-)))

so in my opinion they should not become a member.

I am suprised this exact topic hasn't come up earlier when we we debating some EU thing.

I agree with Jeremy's reasons, Turkey could be denied for those alone.

I have been following those events in Patris's country. Very interesting.

Turkey has a massive population who would be granted free reign to travel and settle across Europe.

EU nations will not allow this.

They will use some human rights excuse to keep them out, but in reality, they will deny them out of fear.

reading this makes me a bit

woman has the equal rights with man and they got it even earlier than many european countries

you dont know anything about the marriage laws in TR
bec. one man can only marry with one woman

turkey is more secure than many european countries that you can go outside by yourself to take a walk at 22pm or maybe later

the people working in european countries are the ones who comes from outside urban so most of them are low educated and bec. they go europe for working they dont try to educate themself

it is true they are shame for Turkish people and they are not vey much acceped in Turkey too.

but there is also a highly educated people in Turkey

another thing is DONT COMPARe turkısh people with arabics. Arabics are dirty and disgusting Turkish people are more like mediterranean.

I am Turkish and proud of it and thats for sure I am not going to jump in one of european countries when Turkey is accepted to EU but I will surely
will earn more than now

one thing is come and see the beautiful country

cheers

Very informative.

I wasn't trying to imply that millions would flood Europe, but that they could.

And the fear of either is there, whether it is just or not.

If the people of Turkey are as racist and intollerant as you are - I'd be much more happy not visiting.

Luckily I know a few Turkish Australians who are very tolerant and nice - and definitly not a racist like you. And I don't judge people on their race or culture.

I think its easy for you to talk about things from the pinkish side of the world.

I am sure you saw the people lying dead on TV for any reason (like because of Tsunami or war or something) and felt very bed about it.

Did you ever got up from your bed scared to think whats going to happen in that new day? Felt unsecure?

Around here nowadays everybody feels a little bit like that…
I am not only talking about Turkish people or Iraqi people or Palestinians; but also Europeans…
Thats because theres terrorism around here and NOBODY TRUSTS anybody. They are scared from eachother so they dont like eachother. In Turkey when a kid does not eat his diner we say ‘I will call the cop. Eat it up’ In Europe they say ‘I ‘ll give you to the Turk’(Thats real I heard it from a Spanish friend).

Thats for sure there should be no borders between countries economically. But there should be borders or maybe WALLS to control people ( especially dangerous people with bombs or guns or anything which they can use to show the hatred inside them) passing from one country to the other.

Do you think America wouuld go and SAVE the Iraqi people if there would be no petrol?

Yes thats true maybe I was a bit racist saying all arabic people are disgusting. Making generalizations like that is nonsense. But maybe you should ask the GI Joe dying in Iraq that’ Why are all these people are fighting with them? Bec. They were there to save them from the DICTATOR?!

Maybe I can be a racist. But not more racist than my friend who doesnt want Turkish people in Europe. I dont want arabic in my country. I am not like Hitler or something. Oh SORRY Hitler was European wasnt he?? Thaks I wont take it.
The truth is the whole world has to live with these people bec they have petrol.

The thing is in the future Europe will need Turkey because we stil have clean water resources, we have soil for growing good quality of vegies and so…

The thing is we are going to be content with our resources and would not need the help of Europe. That is what scares Europe because we are going to be more independent.

I'm not going to pick about your entire post (Though I could with much enjoyment), but their is terrorism everywhere in the world... So what are you even talking about?

Why divide the world up by the colour of our skin? Australia is a multicultural city - we have the worlds second largest greek population, we have a very high chinese population. Our closest neighbour is the biggest muslim country in the world - I certainly don't think of "australian's" as white, black, or any other colour - Australian's are just people who live in Australia - their skin colour doesn't effect anything.

US death count in Iraq - 1200
Iraqi death Count in Iraq - over 100,000

Gee I wonder why they are fighting against an aggessive nation that has been bombing their country for the last 15 years and has poisoned much of the land with depleted uranium and landmines. It must be because they support a dictator and have nothing to do with wanting to not be killed by foreigners...
Maybe I can be a racist. But not more racist than my friend who doesnt want Turkish people in Europe. I dont want arabic in my country. I am not like Hitler or something. Oh SORRY Hitler was European wasnt he?? Thaks I wont take it.

I don't see what Hitler has to do with topic at all. Germany now has an excellent Human Rights record - while Turkey still has big human rights problems - including the usage of chemical weapons on hunger strikers in prisons. I find the usage of chemical weapons fairly abhorant - I find the usage of any kind of weapon on a person contained and peacefully protesting in jail disgusting. As I mentioned earlier I am opposed to Turkey being part of the EU until the Turkish government starts respecting international law and humanity.

As you would know if you study international politics - there is very little nations can do to stop other nations abusing human rights - however I see Turkey's bid to join the EU as a very strong chance at stopping the gross disrespect for fellow humans that occurs in that country.

And there is no need to mention other countries human rights here - I am a big campaigner for human rights in lots of places - including the human rights abuses of Australia. I don't think ours are on the same level as Turkey's but I don't think it's fair to compare them either - two wrongs don't make a right.

Finally if you read the forum rules you'll see that it is mandatorary to have your full name in your signature - so that we can know who you are - this is not an anonymous forum. Please do something about that.

you know master-t!!!

I totally understand your place.
I'm Polish and few years ago Poland was on it's way to become the EU member.to be honest we still are the same poor and not welcome .
I work with children in Holland because I have no rights to take a better job and each time someone is rejecting me bacause I have Polish nationality.I'm well educeted but no one cares.
I am not racist and I never tried to be.
I have had some Turkish friends on Dutch school(all adults)very kind and frendly people but when you get out on the streets and you see all those bad guys from Arabik countries you don't think if they Arabian or Turkish or Marocans...they seem to look the same.

what came upon is Turky a big country that has a different culture ideas about life .

the quastion to you master-t is:WHY TURKY WANTS TO BECOME A EU MEMBER???
if you say that Europe need Turky more then Turky us-Europe.
why is it so important???
what's the issue!!!!!!??

I don't negate that Turky is a beautiful place.
my sister was there and she told me a lot about the nature and places in your country.great maybe it should stay independent from EU as it is now.

well that's it for now .
I could write more but maybe it's not a place for it:-)))

peace to you.

I do not think so ! You do not like Arabics due to their attributes ( I didn't find another word for summing up your arguments "disgusting and dirty") ,

I do not like Turkish people here in Europe because I think that we cannot afford them and not because their smell or their skin.

Our goal is maybe the same but we have definitely different intentions.

I think your statement is the best proof that turkish people like you are not ready to enter the EU.

Of course there are lots of racists here as well , but that is no apology to be a racist youself.

Unfortunately you have to live in an unsecure surrounding but that's also no excuse for your personal attitude.

Moreover you should make the decision if something is wright or wrong from each place of this planet.

Ok, give me some ressources, I'll build a big fuckin wall around you racist. It's people like you who are the leaders into war and "terrorism".

"dirty and disgusting"...
you are disgusting and I don't want to comment differences between the cleanness of the turkish and other arab folks.
btw. I was born in the DDR, a country that used to build walls around its people and kill trespassers.

I just can second that statement about you being part of the reason why turkey shall not be part of the EU.
I am sure you saw the people lying dead on TV for any reason (like because of Tsunami [..]) and felt very bed about it.
No, I did not. I'm fighting day by day for human rights. Our largest national plane company (LTU) has an extra class ("funnily" called 'deportation class' by the leftists) for deporting people into war territory.
Day by day, thousands die, because of my countrys inner policy.
Hearing about 30 poor germans arriving at the local airport in the swimming suits is just plain pathetic compared to the horror going on in the world. There are thousands of soldiers killing dozen of thousands of humans in the whole world, because they are told to.
That is sth. to feel bad about, because everyone is at some point guilty for that. And there are only a hand full of leftists fighting against that and fighting against superficial racist shitheads like you.
Did you ever got up from your bed scared to think whats going to happen in that new day? Felt unsecure?

I am not visually ineffective!!!
I wanted to say that often when I go out alone I meet a very starange and agresive people and mostly they come from Arabic countries.

then it comes the filling of being unsafe.
my friend was chased by some Marocans late at night and they even went to see where she was living....imaging what's that for a girl.

it can be with anyone ,so much bad stuff in this world

you gave the impression that you are agresive as well.

I think it's enough with revile that we write against master-t.
don't you think?

I think with that kind of attitude that he has, he will not reach the good point in his life.
I wish him LUCK of course.

You maybe noticed I commented your statement, that they all look the same and I still think that is totally stereotyping and off-topic

It's interesting that the only people to mention comparing Turks to Arabs are both people who live in Turkey telling people not to compare the two races - funnily enough I think most people on this forum don't compare races at all - we don't think Turks are the same as Arabs, or better, or worse - that's because most of us aren't racist and we don't base our opinions on the race of people.

I also notice that neither of the two Turkish people in this topic have made any attempt to defend your human rights record - which as I understand it is disgusting and makes me glad I don't live in Turkey.
