A Look Into Lameness

Post by LameR »

This is a cool new section. I finally got back into footbag, just in time for World's. I don't know where I'm going to go with footbag, I doubt I'll ever compete, but I hope that I'll always do it as a hobby. My goals for things that I want to "re-learn" for Worlds are:
Both Clips Good (mainly left)
Work on Butterflys
Get my Furious Mirages back
Work on being Toe Guiltless again
Get my Torque with right back, get it for left
...and if I'm lucky hit a Ripwalk, cuz they're sexy.

That's pretty unrealistic but I think I can get my left a little better, get my mirages bs down as well as most of the other two-add toe moves. It feels good to be back

Well, I went to see Napoleon Dynamite and kicked a little afterwards. It took me 4 tries to do a mirage with my right foot, 3 with my left. I sure am not going to be able to do any of the stuff in my last post. I guess I'm starting back about 2 months before I took a break:

Work on both side clippers
Work on all toe 2's and 3's
When I get clippers, move to butters.

Bummer.

So Worlds came and went and I learned a ton. I realized the 3 separate things that were wrong with my left clippers. I got pixie advice, I hit a few new moves. It was a blast in general. I know what I need to work on now.

-Drill left clippers/insides/wraps
-Make sure the right clippers are done correctly as well.
-Don't start too many separate projects until I get clippers the way I want them.
-Keep both-sided, ALWAYS!!!

New moves hit at worlds:

Pixie Legover both sides
A bunch of random knee bump tricks both sides
The 3rd time I tried a left hopover it worked, I'm surprised I never tried that before.
Symp Legovers (thanks Kevin)

Other stuff from worlds:

Pixies improved both sides equal
left clippers improved in the 3 days that I changed how I did them

I now know the extent of how amazingly cool this community is. It was cool to meet everyone that I did. Worlds got me re-energized about footbag more than ever.

No shredding until I finish my online math course. I have 8 days to do 11 chapters. The sooner I finish, the sooner I'm free.

Unrelated to footbag, I realized a bunch of things last night about myself, lost 4 bucks in poker (I started out +2 ended up -2), and in the last 2 days have accidentally missed running twice, soccer once, and inconvenienced people more than they should be in the process. It's been a good week

I guess I should have worded that differently. It's just a phrase I use, but I guess it's footbag terminalogy too.

Erg. I was shredding earlier just screwing around barefoot doing smears. I was making sure my mirage technique was the way I wanted it and then translating it into the smears. I was hitting it probably 50 percent of the time both sides.

So then I decide a whille ago "I'll do some smears in lavers, I've done it before." Well, I was way off. I've hit smears in Lavers before, but all of a sudden I couldn't do anything. I hit a few pretty early, but after that I couldn't hit ANY. None barefoot, none in Lavers. I failed at my flip smear (which I had thought was actually better at it) 35 times in a row. And that's in a row only counting the ones that I considered even a decent try. I probably stopped after a crappy set around 50 times, didn't count around 30-50 other attempts. I had it on my foot a bunch barefoot with perfect technique until it dropped. I landed around 3 of them but they were kinda the'd so I didn't count them, which only made it more frustrated. "Woohoo, finally! Oh wait...was that, shit!"

I think I'm going to attack it again later, but for now I've got other things to do.

I don't know how you feel about people offering you advice in here, but...
LameR wrote:I had it on my foot a bunch barefoot with perfect technique until it dropped.
Learning pixie sets barefoot is the fastest way to have anything -but- perfect technique. Just getting the dexes isn't what matters. When you pixie, the set should rise straight through the window formed by your calf and under your thigh (butt, I guess). When you practice pixies barefoot, your window is made much large, your legs move faster, thus you can put significantly less effort into doing the set to actually have it rise. Further, your feet don't have toe box rails (at least, mine don't). Toe box rails may seem irritating for pixies, but trust me, learning them with the rails is how you get your pixies clean, and once you've schooled them, the rails are not anything that's going to hinder you. The reason is that you need to get a proper set - before you dex. Due to the increased speed/window, you can set and dex at the same time barefoot, which is the.

The most important things to remember when learning pixies are the following:
- Keep your foot flat! This helps in getting the before the dex.
- Don't do the dex too fast! The slower the dex, the higher the set. Fast dexes don't mean that you'll be able to get something off the set, they meant that you tend to get a lower set and there's a good chance of rushing the set and not being able to get it past the rail which is BAD.
- Make sure you do the dex hippy, not leggy. Important! If you do the dex leggy, you'll have a tendency to drop your foot away and not keep it flat as it rises, which leads to a thin dex.
- School your set this way. This isn't necessarily how you'll apply it to every move, but once you're comfortable with the set you'll have a better feel for it and you'll be able to modify it to your style while retaining the cleanliness of the move.
- Watch where the set goes. Do the set on its own, and see where the bag falls. After you set, return to your neutral position and see where the bag falls. This will help you slow down and WATCH WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Do the set in a mirror once you're more comfortable and watch how clean it looks. Ideally, you want the bag to rise straight up and fall about 6 inches in front of the spot between your feet. You may need to learn to set to this area from a toe stall (which helps for -everything-; it's control).

Also...
Don't try and learn smear, try and learn pixie. If you can get a pixie set chest-height, give or take some height, that falls straight back down to that spot, you can learn many of the simple pixie moves: smear, pixie leg over, pixie pick-up, pixie same-side pick-up, smudge, magellan, dimwalk, pixie clipper, parkwalk, whatever... They're all easy once you have your set. Try to learn a move instead of a set is where you get a lot of bad habits. Look at people who hit ripwalks with a 6 inch set... Can they hit stepping clippers, blurs, and the like? Maybe, but can they hit them clean and with good form? No. I suppose then, you could alter the above from "learn pixie" to "learn a move that requires a high set," but I still hesitate to say that. What should be kept in mind is not to school the wrong thing. If you school, school nice, high, slow sets. That's the muscle memory you want. Not rushed, and erratic sets.

Sorry about the lengthy post, but I hope some of this helps.

Peace,

Yeah thanks a ton Sam. You were dead on for most of it. I had been practicing with Lavers on before I was screwing around barefoot earlier today, so I guess I"m not really learning them barefoot, but it is messing me up. You were right on pretty much everything, thanks!

Don't have much footbag related to put in here, but I need something to distract me from my current failures so I'll post this.

3 days ago I got the bags that Daryl sent me to go show to two places here in town, both of which most likely will soon be carrying them. I'm going to go show them the bags, do a couple of simple moves, explain the sport, and show one of the worlds' routines to them.

Yesterday I got my Abshire bag back repaired, along with a new mini and another normal.

Non-Footbag Related:

Conditioning camp is making me realize how inadequate the shape I'm in is. The first two days went decent, but yesterday was just crap. I doubt I'll make varsity now. There's another guy my age who's been doing really well in the endurance parts, he's slower than me, but a ton stronger. There's also a guy a year older than me that's probably now higher on the varsity coaches' list now. I wish I could just sit out this season and train for next year.

Went by 3 places today attempting to get them to sell Mr. Sandbags. The first one was wayyy interested. I was impressed that when I showed him the video of Vasek's finals routine this year he asked "What was that? A Butterfly?" He was way impressed with it. He sells Flying Clipper bags right now and was fascinated with the material and the use of sand as a filler. I'd say he's 95% likely to buy some.

2nd stop was Zero Gravity, the store that Daryl and I have been attempting to get selling his bags for a while now. JoAnn, the owner of the store was amazed by the routine and had a bunch of good ideas for the use of footbags for alternate methods rather than just freestyle. My dad is good friends with her so that really really helped the sale. She's probably about an 85% chance of buying.

3rd stop was actually unexpected. While we were in Zero Gravity, JoAnn recommended that we go to "The Scooter Shop next door." A kid that was in Zero G just chilling was I guess the son of the owners of that place. So we go in and the guy apparently has seen some cool freestyle in person. He's a little overweight and despite his son's (I'm guessing he was his son) efforts he didn't feel like watching the video. Now don't get me wrong, he wasn't being rude or anything, he just thought what he had seen in person was as far as it goes (which I'm pretty sure it isn't). We gave him the info, but I seriously doubt that he'll contact Daryl.

Overall, it was a pretty cool day. I got some good ideas on how to get more people freestyling in Salem. There's 130,000 people here, I should be able to find 10 that enjoy freestyling. I mean c'mon that's 1 out of every 13,000 people, that shouldn't be too hard. Especially with more stores selling decent footbags. I'm going to try to have the store owners get the people that buy the bags to contact me about kicking sometime, as well as leaving fliers there, putting an entry in the newspaper every once in a while, and just kicking in public.

Even if I may be getting busy with soccer and school, it doesn't mean I can't try to help the Salem scene.

Sidenote: I'm glad I didn't have to kick in front of any of the potential buyers today. I would have made myself look stupid. My calves are crazy sore from conditioning camp.

Going to take more of an observer role in the footbag community during soccer season, there's no reason to risk injuring myself playing footbag when I have 1-3 games per week and this being the best chance of my team making playoffs while I'm at the school.

Well, I guess this is return attempt number two. This time I get to pull along a bum right ankle with me. I realized yesterday how much I miss footbag, but at the time it was around 5am so I couldn't exactly get up and shred. So a while ago I found my other Laver (had only known where one was), and my 32 (meh, i should be using a sandbag) and went back to the basics.

I can still do toe stalls easily, I randomly did mirage>legover>clipper, but then realized how much my strongside clippers hurt. I've had a bunch of ankle injuries over the last few months due to soccer. So basically I now have no flexibility in my strong, and well...my flip never was any good anyway. I guess it's good in a way, because now are both about equal.

I'm considering seeing a doctor about my ankle, but am worried that I may be told to not play soccer for a while, as well as shred (i guess i could just use toes, but that's not my weak(er) point).

I guess my goals for the next few months are:

-Figure out what to do about the ankle

-Progress clippers at the same rate

-Don't get to far ahead with toe set tricks

-Talk to former shredders from school, see if they're willing to give it another go

-Get a sandbag, I shouldn't be using a 32

-Don't be a freaking quitter again

It's cool to do it fast. I first "sealed" it flip, which is funny because my flip clippers suck and my strong aren't bad. But yeah the reason that's in quotes is due to sealed meaning was able to catch it while stumbling sideways. I've since figured out how to keep the balance though, just gotta jump higher :)
