Footbag painting ideas

Post by Muffinman »

I hate my painting class. I don't know why I am majoring in painting. It is really crappy and stressful and I hate it and I hate going to class and I think it's just because my prof is really really bad at teaching and really really good at making people feel crappy.

I am working on a three-piece project with a footbag theme (this crazy amazing illustrator in my class that I envy to death always comes up to me when I'm drawing and asks, "Is this for your hacky?" and my professor always calls me, "Mister Hacky Sack" (for these reasons I am never wearing my newly aquired Hacky Sack Pro Team tshirt in public).

Anyway, anyway.
So I am working on this series and I am out of ideas for the third painting. My first piece got a a crappy critique. It was a series of, like, 30 footbags all on seperate pieces of illustration board. The critique was bad because everyone said it just looked like a series still lifes and it was boring and had no meaning. I hate that. That is the biggest joke to me in fine arts, when the professor asks, "What does it mean?". It's productive in the long run, but I like to draw I don't necessarily pack meaning into every single painting I make. I don't make art, I make paintings. But anyway. The second painting was great and I had tons of fun and it wasn't stressful at all. I did a collage and just mashed together a ton of different footbag-related elements. It was a blast and I felt really comfortable working on it and I will get a good crit on it, I think, when that comes around. Even if I don't get a good crit I feel good about it because it is very different from what I usually do and that's basically what my prof wants: something unique and meaningful

So for my third painting I need an idea for something unique and meaningful that I can paint. I scribbled lots of ideas and the one I like most is this image I have in my head from Whirled Shred of the after party at Worlds. I like the image of everyone happy together and I thought of depicting people from different regions of the world and people speaking in different languages and all that to create a sense of unity and happiness, because that is one of the greatest things about the sport.

What are your ideas? Do you think mine is okay? Keep in mind this is for school and it isn't supposed to just be a pretty picture. What are some elements I could utilize in integrating my message with the painting? I thought of a happy blue sky and really green trees, because that is happy and lighthearted. I'm get really stressed out over this class, so any suggestions and help whatsoever will really make me feel better. Thanks! (And sorry for writing so much....I know I always have second thoughts about reading such long posts. Bleh!)

You know the painting with the hands almost touching each other (the name slips me) but have one of the guys holding a foot bag

But really if you want to keep with the footbag theme show the frustration of missing a trick. Like a dark backdrop and the bag on the ground with the player looking like he just had his spleen taken out or something.

Or you could have a picture of a sunrise but instead of a sun it's a footbag. Thats all I have.
I think I going to take over Canada. You should help.

A circle that's stopped because the last guy finally arrived at the airport.

If that makes sense.

Erik, think about what you had on your mind when you were shredding your ass off. THink about the feelings you felt. Then, put a still image of you shredding maybe a whilr or osis or whatever trick youe feel as appropriate and behind that, a scene of maybe people seeing and cheering. Then, above you (the shredder) put like those thoughts into pictures and fade it in so as it blends into the surroundings not lieterally but like your mind is being portrayed outside. It looked really neat in my head. Then again, no one understands me and my posts.

nah jericho, relax. even if a few people say all of your posts are random and pointless, dont worry bout it. i mean, really, half of the posts on modified are pretty pointless when it comes right down to it, not to offend anyone else. while i agree your posts are often random and possibly slightly scatterbrained, who gives a fuck? in my opionion thats not even a bad thing. i often find your posts entertaining at the least. as long as YOU understand em, its fine :) just pretend you are posting for your own benefit and interest...thats what i do :D (it shows, doesnt it?)

EDIT:besides, that does sound like a cool idea, LBF

What about a circle of say 5 people - one of them is in the middle of a run - say hitting ps whirl - and the other people are all reacting like "wow this run is really good" - I'm sure you know what I mean - hands in the air - smiles and amazement on their faces etc - they can all look like they are from different places with different racial backgrounds. Then around the circle - in the background - is the same circle - repeated all around the place - as if it were different circles - but it's really the same one - just further away and from a different angle. Lots of really happy colours - and maybe distorted with their bodies getting bigger towards the top - kind of fish eye lens style - but cooler. The face of the person hitting the PS whirl needs to be really sharp - as should the bag be - maybe everything else can be slightly blurry - and they need a really serious concentration look on their face - completely in the zone.

That's my idea anyway - I think it captures the best part of footbag.

Copy some famous painting and change something in it to footbag-releated.

How about some dude hitting a dragonfly (when both legs are up) because it looks so cool but he/she is shredding alone and the sun is going down behind him so he is like dark and you cant make him out to well and he is casting a shadow. I would pay chash for that like a velvet elvis or something and hang it in my room.

how about some guy hitting something huge, on the top of a skyscraper? like, if there was only like a tiny little area around him, and he is just WAY up there. i dunno how you would be able to portray that, but whatever.

how about having a spot light on one guy hitting something big, or even just kicking. i dont really know how to explain it, but make him like the only one there.
like the spotlight fades into busyness. Maybe like a guy shredding in a crowded sidewalk but the guy and the bag are warm colors and the crowd is cool colors.
or if you want to encorperate other shreders to the same thing to all the people and just have a semi dark backround of like an alley way.
My 2cents.

Yeh, that's kind of what I was thinking off, kind of like the person shredding is the only person who's really alive while all the other people ar just mindlessly going about the chores of every day, like one guy shreding in a world of ghosts or something

How about a timeline thing. Like a collage of the pics but all the same guy. The first he is young and just picking up a bag. The next he had lavers  and is hitting something easy. Then that last pic hes busting soemthing crazy.

Cool ideas. I like Ashley's a lot and Steven and Jeremy's sound a bit like my original plan. I still have until Monday to start, and I will have a few weeks to work on it. More ideas would be great! Thanks guys!

How bout a really clear, picture of a shredder whirling or eggbeater in mid air, sweat running across his/her brow. With crowds of people on either side but they're blurry and unfocused, as to portray the focus you have to have to achieve great things. Just a thought. I cant paint for my life, so i dunno.

another one came to me..........how about a guy on a colun like a japanese training thing in the sunrise where it's red-like and he's on a lcipper or heel stall? Then behind him, nothing but nature so footbag goes cleanly into nature...
