Walls on the toes of Lavers

Post by Krafty »

Hey guys, I was just wondering if you're supposed to remove the walls around the toe box. I've been skooling pixie sets a lot, but sometimes it just seems that the bag gets stuck on my foot because of the walls. Just wondering what your opinions are. Thanks!

Alot of pepole say that haveing the walls helps learn pixie sets more *propper* i took mine off and never really tryed pixies when i had them on. some ppl take them off tho for some insane sets. if i where you id keep them on then lose them after a while, its makes the feel of your shoe different and alot more 8) siruse feeling, like WOOH im a big bad foootbager WHAT NOW GANGSTA WHAT NOW. but ya they look kooler and give u a bigger stall area and you can lace them a reallllly awsome way, whitch actualy matt cross tought me it at funtasiks, he laced them for me and i havent unlaced them once bc i was to scared i wouldnt beabule to get them back, but one day i looked at them and relized how he did it ... lol * thanks matt :P * and if u want to get crazy about it, it takes a whole 6.2 gram of of each shoe.... ( yes i really did waigh it)

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah, I'd say I have a decent pixie set on both sides but sometimes the bag gets stuck when I go for a move with a pixie component right in the middle of a run. That's really the only time when I get frustrated with the walls. Oh well...I've got to agree that having the walls really improved my pixie sets though, so I guess I'll be leaving them on for a while!

Wasn't there a thread on this not too long ago? I think we came to the conclusion that cutting off the walls isn't a good idea, since it leads to lazy pixie sets, and that if you're doing your pixie sets properly, the bag should never get snagged in the walls (it should dex up underneath your knee).

I'm playing not in lavers, but in "The Story" , And I've have a problem just like your, and the problem was not in wall's , it was just my wrong dex...
it should dex up underneath your knee.

My last pair I cut em off and it was great.

My new pair I didnt and it is great.
(pixie sets are a little harder because the bag catches some time but get over it...I did) I think you should leave them on.

Yeah, you wouldn't want to learn toe stalls properly when you are starting out, that's for sure.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me why having this crutch is helpful to anyones games?

You can do a really slurry pixie even with toe walls, proper technique is how you do it properly regardless of shoe choice.

Sidewalls are a stupid fence you have to hop over before starting your dex. laaaaaaame!

Why don't you bother reading the link to the thread where I answered that?

ITS WAY WAY WAY EASIER TO SLUR WITHOUT THE WALLS!!! Its not that complicated. ESPECIALLY when you are starting, and dont have anyone else to show you better, as is the case with alot of people.

Everyone just thinks to get their foot off and around as fast as possible, without even thinking about the best way to do it.
Sidewalls are a stupid fence you have to hop over before starting your dex. laaaaaaame!
I dont even understand this. The sidewalls should not AFFECT the set. They just keep it clean.

If you want to cut it off later, fine, do what you want. But a beginner should not.

Besides, most freestylers started kicking before freestyling, and learn how to stall WITHOUT lavers, because they dont make the leap right away, so its a moot point. And even if they did start freestyling right away, like you Tom, they dont get lavers right away, so again they learn how to stall properly without them.

Anyway that might come off at a rant... thats because it is, and I didnt like the tone of the post before this one. If i mis-read or whatever, i apologize before hand.

Tom, by the same logic, couldn't you claim that any specific footwear used for footbag is a crutch, and therefore a detriment to your game?

Why do you need the crutch of shoes, in general? Yves Kriel (sp?) and Matt Cross have shown us that you can indeed bust barefoot, so should we all aspire to that?

I don't know exactly what Tom ment, but I'm just guessing that he ment that, in his opinion, the only reason to keep side walls on is to help with toe stalls. In his opinion it is better to work on your toe stalls a little instead of having the walls get in the way of other tricks... so in a way the walls are hurting your game because they get in the way of tricks that are much harder to perform then toe stalls so with a little extra effort to improve toe stalls your footbag game will grow immensly. Unlike playing with a shoe that is bad for footbag cutting off the walls has a plus side too it... I think that's what Tom ment, but hey I don't know for sure.

Well, I know what Tom meant, I was just exagerating his argument to show that it's silly.

It's my opinion that cutting the toe walls from your Lavers can only help a dex that is at best thin, and at worst outright the. If you're dexing the bag with your toes... I mean, really... The ankle is really the outer limit where I consider a dex clean.

Lay-persons being introduced to the sport often make the same accusation about specific footwear being used - that it's a crutch, and that it shouldn't be used. Freestylers as experienced and knowedgable as Tom Mosher should recognise that specific footwear (including toe boxes) aren't crutches, they simply the best available equipment.

Edit: Just wanted to throw a disclaimer in here, as upon re-reading I think I sound like a bit of an ass. Though I disagree with him here, I have nothing but respect for Tom, in fact, I'm pretty sure we'd get along great.

I would just like to appologize for getting heated sometimes.

What a silly thing to get passionate about!

What about this - what if lavers were like 520's and just came with a naturally open landing deck? If it wasn't required that you open up the toe area no one would have sidewalls at all and we would all come up with some "logical" argument for why having them is bad when someone came along having sidewalls.

Nick, I feel like we disagree alot online. Actually.. we really only bitch about this topic, regardless, I didn't mean to make you mad.

I think I will leave it at "do whatever the fuck you want".
