What is the official definition of 'muted'? From what I've gained, it is when you do some sort of set and leave the dexing leg floating in the air before the next dex or stall. Muted also seems to have something to do with not fully setting the bag all the way up--like doing a trick somewhere between crispy and original. Hmm...hard to explain...
Take drifter, for example:
set-plant-raise the dexing leg-perform the dex mostly downtime
--or--
set like a low stepping set but leave the dexing leg in the air-clipper with the same foot
Is the second version 'muted'? Muted drifter?
If I do a pixie like:
toe set-plant-ss mirage
or:
toe set-no plant-ss mirage
Is the second version 'muted'?
I guess what my question boils down to is this: Is muted defined as a 'non-planting' dexing set or a set that is done with a timing somewhere between crispy and original?
Hope this makes sense...
Muted
non-planting dexing set, although I don't think non-planted dexing sets that come directly before an op symposium dex are considered muted.
non-planting pixie same legover is an example of a muted set, pixie op symp whirl is not.

as Matt said muted needs set. Normally after the setting dex is done you plant the dexing leg. Like in pixie ss butterfly a.k.a. parkwalk. Usually you plant after pixie set, but this time leave the dexing leg up and the do butterfly. That's muted parkwalk. Pdx mirage isn't muted trick 'cos it doesn't have set. But if you hit quasi op toe without plant then it is muted quasi toe (or strange pdx mirage).
If you want to hit muted drifter, then you must have set and then it isn't drifter anymore. It's muted stepping op clipper. also as Matt: if there is symposium dex after the set then the trick isn't muted.
Also if you have multidex sets then the leg which did the last dex of the set is the one you should not plant. (very nice confusing explanation
)
Like muted sailing ss dlo. You don't plant the atomic/tapping leg.
So... Matt said it easy way. I did it hard way.
