The Gym and Footbag

Post by NotHisRealName »

For those who don't know, I've been having issues with my knee, so I'm pretty much unable to play much (if any) footbag.
So reciently, to stay in shape, I've joined the gym and I'm wondering if anyone out there does gym work as a sort of training for footbag.

I do 'endurance' work on the treadmill and such, but I'm talking more specificly, weights.

Anyone else do gym work? If so, what do you do with footbag in mind?
Comment in the BCS blog if you feel the need to.

Gareth, Due to you having bad knees, i reckon if it is not too painful, try and strengthen the muscles around the knee, eg leg curls etc.

If you buy leg weights that you strap to your calfs and do steps it'll help.

For about 2 months, i used a machine at the gym at my Univ that I thing helped strengthen my pixie sets. I dont know the name of it but ill describe it. Maybe your gym has it.

1) It is a machine, not freeweights.
2) Girls mostly use it to strengthen their inner thighs or outer leg muscles.
3) It has a platform on which you stand. There is a padded circular mass about 6 inches thick and 1 foot long, connected to a lever. You apply pressure to the padded mass with different parts of your leg to displace it. Depending on the weight attached to the machine, resistance is variable.
4) If you face 12 o' clock and the padded mass is in front of you (perpendicularly), you can place it just above your knee cap and lift your knee up near your chest. This is the exercise i did. I worked quickness training.

Also, with some free weight, im sure you can increase your calf muscle strength just by doing calf raises. Id use a small amt of weight and do about 20-30 reps until you feel the burn. Hope this helps.

LIGHT WIEGHTS!!!!!!!
It may be embarasing taking weights off a machine after an 70 lb girl uses it but its ESSENTIAL to use light weights! Strength not mass.
A general rule of thumb is do at least 12 repetitions. And there shouldn't be a burning sensation after 12, only a slight fatigue.

Like Nate said, 12 or more repetitions is propably the best for footbag because it improves your strenght endurance. But if you want to raise your maximum strenght, you should do 6-8 reps. For example, if you want to be able to jump really high for a trick, do only 6-8 reps. Remember, doing 6-8 reps also enlarges the size of your muscles the most, just ask Ales.
