Hey. Does anybody here do yoga?
I don't really know anything about yoga, but I am interested to start. I am really really inflexible and I want to find a good way to improve that, along with my physical health in general. I don't really want to start with a class or anything. Ideally I would like to learn some basics from a website, but I had trouble finding information on that -- probably due to my ignorance on the subject(??). If anybody could point me towards a good website (if not, a good instructional book with diagrams), I would be really thankful!
Even an explanation on what yoga is and what it will do for me would be really helpful!
How do you start yoga?

Yoga for Dummies - DVD.
Try the DVD, it's just a normal price, the yoga teacher is extremely attractive, and she makes it fun and easy to pick up. Yoga is all about balance, control, and breathing techniques combined. Yoga has all sorts of great outcomes for the body and mind. After you start getting into yoga, you'll gain balance, flexibility, and strength. Your body will thank you every session you're done, it's a great feeling once you're finished. Give that a try for a while, and maybe attend a class a couple times a month. If you start picking up yoga and want some different poses, get the Yoga for Dummies : Advanced. Enjoy !

you could probably get books from the library too. I did a little yoga when i was younger, and this summer i lived with my uncle, who's being doing karate, yoga and (sorta random) israeli folk dancing for years. he lent me this great book on the BKS Iyengar style, which i enjoyed.
yoga's actually really easy, it's just stretching and postures... okay, actually it's not easy, but the basics are pretty simple. I think that you should totally try it from a book or DVD first, then if you're into it, go to a class. The classes can be really helpful, because you'll learn more about the dynamics of yoga - even though you're "just standing there" or whatever, you have to be constantly adjusting your body to perfect the posture. it's like super slow footbag...

before i hurt my back, way before i broke my shoulder, i was a regular daily practitioner of hatha yoga(i think thats how you spell it). its really good for yah and being bendy n' loose all day is a blessing. i miss yoga. ill get back into it once my back fully heals. yeah you should be able to get yoga books about anywhere...bookstores, grocery stores, library but if there is a place nearby that has classes...you should prolly look into that.
