quitting ciggarettes?

Post by tstep84 »

Im in the process right now. I'm 20 years old and have smoked since I was 15. I just quit for the first time. New years was my last ciggarette. Anyone else ever go through this hell? Its not as hard as I thought it would be. At first there were some physical effects from the withdrawl, but now its primarily just mental. If anyone knows any tricks or anything they have actually used I would appreciate hering about it. So far everytime I want one I think about the guy in IHOP I saw one morning who sounded like his lungs were bubbling everytime he talked. Anyway, I really like to keep up with the no smoking... I am finding it is possible but have had some serious problems and have almost slipped a couple times. Anyone who doesn't smoke, I hope I don't need to tell you this, but don't start, it sucks... (Im not in 8th grade anymore, so its not that cool anymore)

something you have to remember, if you're going to be serious about quitting, is that there's no such thing as 1 cigarette. you can't let yourself say, "I'll just have this one, and that's it" because then the next day you'll have one, then the next, and suddenly, you're buying packs again.

if you relapse, give it until you're comfortable enough to try again, and try again. It takes a few tries, usually. if it doesn't take you more than one, good for you, but if you do go back to it, don't be afraid to try and try again.

stick with it, my footbag game got a lot better when I quit cigarettes. i wonder what would happen if i quit pot...

there is no one cigarette.

You are an addict now, and there is no way to have just one. It's very difficult to keep at it.

Especially when I have made it several months, one seems so harmless. . .

a lesson I keep not learning well.

Hello matt. I finally found out how to use this thing called modified... Yea I cut it back to like 10 day before I quit. I have gone strong since. I find myself buying a lot of dutchmasters though. Do they have that much nicotine? I just got done playing with josh benham and its the first good session since new years. I have noticed that I have more stamina playing. The first couple days was tough, but it just so happend the first day of chilly philly was my first day quitting. Two days of footbag was a good way to start off my abstaining from ciggarettes!

I am trying to quit nicoteine too. I have only been smoking for a few weeks but I can already feel it taking a hold of me and I'm really not pleased with it. Nothing more phony than cigarettes.

Actually I had a person I was giving a ride home last night toss my only pack out the window. The only reason I did this was because I was drunk, which is funny because I think that might be the first good decision ever made whilst drunk.

Thanks for the motivation man, I'd hate trying to quit past 18.

Umm, Dan, How long have you been shredding? Im curious to see how fast your game will digress since you smoke now? Or has it any. Don't keep smoking so you can give me a more accuratee answer though. If you have only smoked for a couple of weeks, you should definetly stop now. Its going to be tough, Im not gonna lie, but its gonna be cake compared to what it will be like in a year or two. I don't think you have gotten used to the ciggarette after meals, when you wake up, when you step in your car, when you finish a class... The list goes on. I could think of 100 excuses for having them before.

PS. Don't drink and drive please....

Go to your pharmacy, ask the pharmacist what kind of nicotine patch best suits your smoking habits, buy a pack, put them on, and don't smoke.
NOT EVEN ONE CIGARETTE.

As others have posted, there is no such thing as just one cigarette.
I should know.

Good luck, it's damn hard to quit, but quite possible.

Yea, at this point their is no set protocol for when I smoke. I simply do it when I feel like it (At first when I felt like it was when I just wanted to smoke for the sake of smoking, now when I feel like it is when my body feels like it). I haven't had a cigarette since Saturday (Two days ago) and I'm feeling anxious/antsy/grumpy.

I really, really don't want to smoke anymore. I'm really pissed at myself from letting something I did socially turn into something I did habitually, though I feel wrong using that word, as it isn't a habit, it's an addiction.

I'll keep reporting on it.

Maybe this could turn into a nicotine support group for footbaggers... The first few days were pretty tough, but I can honestly say that after 4 or 5 days without them, the your desire begins to diminish fast. Its quite amazing because I felt so much anxiety before I quit about how I would feel afterwards. The anxiety I experienced was soon gone though, now its just a mental test becuase I know physically I don't need them.

I don't think that you need to get the patch in order to successfully quit smoking. I myself am an ex-smoker and I quit about a year ago - I am talking reaaaallllly quit. I haven't touched a single cigarette since I decided to stop, not one. And you know what, I can tell you in all honesty I will never have another puff of a cancer stick for the rest of my life. Even if I did have a puff I would most likely caugh and caugh and puke just because, when I quit, I convinced myself that I would never let myself be a sucker again.

I smoked for about two years at a rate of maybe a pack every 3 days and I can tell you what the secret to quitting is... You just have to hate smoking. Look at the facts and see what smoking does to people. If you want cancer, emphyzema, or any other nice disease that attacks smokers then by all means keep smoking. If you want to support the tobacco industry who makes a fortune off of killing people then keep smoking. There are 'fat cats' getting rich off of you smoking!!

Really, when people say that they cannot quit smoking because 'it is relaxing', I tell them that's BS... You knick for a cigarette and then when you finally have one you dont feel any better, you just feel normal again. Now THAT is what I call ADDICTION.

Still need help quitting?http://www.quitsmokingsupport.com/lungphotos.htm

One more thing I forgot to mention... GOOD LUCK GUYS! I know that you can do it! Just think of all the extra cash you will have lying around and how much healthier you will feel!

Don't give in! One cigarette will lead to a pack one night when you go drinking. Then after that pack you will justify buying another, then BAM! Smoker again! The first cigarette back is a catalyst to starting again, don't give into temptation!

Get a rolling box, to make good smokes (with filters) that cost 70-80% less than regular.

Unrelated to the New Year , I havent had a cigarette since Jan. 2nd, because I had a contest that Sunday to see how long I could go without a cigarette.

I'm not quitting, or trying to quit.

The contest just isn't done yet.

By "good", I mean good tasting, fresh.....when compared to the extra dry tobacco they roll for the the regular brands.

It is still unhealthy, yes, but the $$$$ savings can be huge.

I couldnt agree more there is no such thing as trying to quit its you quit or you didnt. relapse and have a smoke for whatever reason and your quiting is over.

To battle a physical addiction is a battle of your mind vs your physical body. your body will make it as hard as possible to quit but your mind must be at its tip top shape to have success. Wich is the main reason why people always relapse after drinking.

IF you wanna truly quit the best thing is to have a pasion something like cough* cough* playing footbag to keep your mind off of what your body wants and my second most important tip is keep a straight mind no matter what NO DRINKING AND NO DRUGS. its been 6-7 years since i last had a ciggerete i went about 2-3 years being straight edge to focus on school. When i got to college i drank and smoked a little pot and i was fine i never had a single thought to smoke.

What happened to me is i was in a smoke free envirement addicted to battling my good freind (who was a non smoker) in super smash brothers (video game). we must have played for 6 straight hours when i got in my car to go home i said wow i went that whole time and didnt think about smoking once maybe i should just quit. Well that was my last ciggerate EVER. i kept a pack in my pocket the whole time just as motivation. I spent alot of time with my non smoking freinds. made some new freinds and everything worked out perfectly.

You must have a strong mind and you must be smart about when to quit and who to be around in the beggining.

I hope my advice helps some people.

After todexon with all the partying i thought, i give it a break .

its my fourth day without cigarettes and the first time i quit.

I think it will work out well, since i wasnt smoking much, not
even everyday, the fact that i had my first cigarette ever with 21
will also help...

Hopefully i can stay strong aswell when i work, especially when
working at the club...
For me it would be ideal, if i can stay smoke free for like 6 months,
then i would either keep that up, or i'd go back to my old style
of smoking ; only smoke while drinking or at parties´.
That worked for like two years and a friend of mine still keeps it
up that way.
Of course quitting forever sounds and probably is better,
but lets talk in a week

My friend quit smoking for New Years and he said to get over the oral addiction he would eat baby carrots. Just thought that might help any of you that were trying to quit.

I think I should quit. I don't want to for health or footbag reasons, I just think I'd enjoy having an extra $27 a week. Wow, now that I think about it, I could buy an extra pair of Lavers every two weeks. That's crazy. Maybe I should, but I enjoy my cigs.
