The demo on Friday wasn't as successful as the previous two weeks had been, less kids showed up than usual, but despite that, there was still plenty of interest. One kid declared he was going to buy a freedom bag the next day (...from a store in the mall that Rory hired on for Daryl.) Another two kids were there with their Mom, who was asking lots of footbag-oriented questions...the kids expressed interest in the possibility of a class. Also, the Mom ...Shelly I think? She was listening to the music, and she nodded to me and said, "What band is this?"

The tune that was playing was Gouryella, by Gouryella (A collaboration between Tiësto and Ferry Corsten, since broken up). I said to her that the CD was called Magik 3: Far From Earth, so she said, "So the band is Magik 3?"

Understandably, she didn't have a clue how electronic music or mixed sets work or anything, so I spent some time explaining to her how DJs mix tracks together and stuff. I summed it up with, "If you turn over a CD in the Trance/House section of a music store, and every track has a different artist, that's probably the kind of CD that you want."

ANYWAY.

Nope! I'm afraid not Dan.

It's 6:30pm and I just woke up. I hope I can sleep tonight. Also, I'm hungry and I don't have any food. :(

Ugggh,

Wednesday is a painful day. Went for a shred with Kevin and Shane yesterday. Shane has some real potential, and I hope he comes out more. Anyways, props to sensei kevin who busted out a mad janiwalker (his first I think) which was sweeeeet. He hit some other mad combo that was super impressive but I cant remember all the names, but alot of pixie symp illusion -> pixie symp mirage and so on, it was tight.

I hit a planted pixie swirl and phoenix (sweeet) so all was well. Kevin will post later im sure and he will remember more than me.

Cheers

No dude, you hit Pixie swirl with AND without a plant! Phoenix this assassin that! Ben had assassin off his foot a few times too.:o

My combo was Pixie symp mirage > Pixie symp illusion > Pixie ss symp whirl, I already posted it in the New Runs section...

Shane's a cool guy, seems keen to learn more...he was trying flipside clippers for awhile unsuccessfully...so I gave him some tips, like staying over the bag, and bam, he hits one "first try" with that idea in mind. Then, he hits another one. And another. It was pretty cool.

And yeah, turns out I can get about an "above the knee" height barraging set off once in awhile. Who knew?

I was hitting delusion like cake too. :)

tonite, more YMCA shred. Byrin is coming. woot. im pumped. Got the mini dv cam ready to rock, so i can make my one man net video (fuck freestyle) ;) There will be some mad footage of sensei kevin hitting barrage both sides, or else he gets edited out. Same with Byrin, he needs to hit peglegbeater both sides or he only gets to be in the directors cut ;) Man, im tired and its only 2:30. this sucks. I need a goal for this evening, so someone please post one. Watch for the mad shrEdmonton footage early next week (When i figure out how to use windows movie maker 2) woot.

oh how long its been.

Well, allow me to update you all. Friday we kicked at the YMCA again. Byrin came out, and it was sweet. I hit Paradox Drifter (woot) and that was it for exciting things. Tried hard to hit stepping ss whirl, but to no avail. Drank all weekend. Kicked Last Nite at the butterdome. Our usual spot was taken because of the "Journal Games" a city wide track meet for elementary students, so we went and kicked in the hockey rink and it was cold. which i thought would be nice, but no. I sucked. I spent too much time laughing about silly shit and not playing, but we filmed the whole event ;) Should be good. I did hit Reverse Twirl though? (Sensei Kevin can you correct that if Im Wrong) it was fun.

See you all in Finland.

Yeah, Reverse Twirl. So clean, and a really tough trick.

WARNING: BIG-ASS POST

I'll update starting from Friday.

Byrin, Ben, Rory and I kicked at the YMCA again, which unfortunately had a low turnout, but still lots of interest from kids. I think if we actually had a class that quite a number of kids would sign up. I had some decent strings with spinning clippers and quantum sets and ducking/diving...I've been trying to move away from starting every string with Smudge, Smear, or anything else Pixie.

After the shred, we picked up some beerstuffs and headed over to Ben's place. I met his roommate, his girlfriend, and his cats. I hate cats so much. We sat down to watch Natural Born Kickers, and encountered plenty of problems. I'm pretty sure that we had to restart the DVD program we were using at LEAST 4 times. It kept freezing up, or skipping...it was a joke. In the end, we watched maybe 60% of the video.
:/

I introduced Ben and Byrin to Salad Fingers, which was expectedly hilarious slash creepy as hell.

Oh, Hubert Cumberdale. Fancy seeing you here.

...YYAURHSRHAORHOASHUORGH.

I got home at about 2:00am, went to bed about a halfhour after that. I slept terribly, and ended up "waking up" at 8:00am. I only got maybe 3 hours of sleep. Probably not even that. I worked on some music, cleaned up my room, etc. then eventually booked it over to West Edmonton Mall to meet up with Rory and Byrin for a shred on the HMV stage. (sidenote: hopefully we'll get some exposure there leading up to the ShrEdmonton tournament.) Everyone played well, and a good thing too. At any given time, there were at least 30 people watching. Sometimes we'd have as many as 130-150 people watching...I think Byrin even got some applause. :)

Highlights include Rory hitting Pdx Drifter midstring, Byrin zooming everything (Spinning Osis > Vortex I think?), and myself hitting Goliath first try in front of about a dozen skater kids.

SO. Byrin and I head back home to my place, with the intent of sleeping until we have to leave again for Frequency, the rave we were attending that night. We got back at probably 5:30pm, checked up on the bus schedule, and as it turns out, the bus we had to catch was coming in an hour and a half. Only.

This means that I would have maybe an hour of sleep, MAYBE and hour and a quarter. Keep in mind I woke up at 8am that morning, and the rave goes until 7am the following day. As it turns out, I was still too pumped from the shred at WEM to sleep at all. I got some "rest", but as for actual sleep, I got maybe 15 minutes. I doubt it was even that much. :?

Byrin and I barely caught the bus we needed to take, we transferred, and I explained to the busdriver that we were needing to get off in a part of town I didn't know at all. He was really nice, and said he was cool with giving us a shout when we were near. He even dropped us off right at the street we needed to walk up, instead of the busstop which was a block away. I love it when people are friendly. :)

Byrin talked about this part a bit, but I will anyway. We walked up 104st...but in this area the streets and avenues were kinda obscured, so the street address didn't help for finding an exact spot. It just helped to find the general area the building was in. We managed to find this building that looked rave-worthy, but it wasn't labelled Polish Hall, there was no music, and not a lot of activity...so we figured we'd come back if we didn't find anything else. It was pretty quiet, except for ambient city noise and the snow crunching under our feet. Suddenly a new sound entered my ears, it made me stop walking - just a slight bass sound at about 11 Hz I figure. Byrin couldn't hear it.

Byrin: "Follow your nose Toucan Sam!"

I did. :) I totally found the place, but were turned away for being too early. I expected as much, so we took a walk to kill the time...

See, the two of us had originally planned to shred at the rave...to bring a brand new white freedom or something so that it would glow in blacklight. Buuuutttttt, we were really tired from the WEM shred and decided against it in the end.

Well guess what. As soon as we were inside, the beats got the energy flowing again. OBVIOUSLY. I can't believe that I actually thought I'd still be tired once inside the building. To make things even worse, they were playing Satisfaction by Benny Benassi, a tune I've pretty much come to associate with shred. I got all depressed for the first while...there was so much space to play, and lots of glowstickers and poi people were showing their stuff...a live DJ to guide your shred...it would have been a lot of fun, and there's a good chance that both of us would have an entourage of beautiful women by the end of the night.

Okay maybe not, but I can dream.

The night was fun overall, not many big names, just DJ Icey and George Acosta, both of which sucked it up. Well, Acosta was okay, but it was all hard trance...not really my bag.

I got asked for E 8 times, got offered E 5 times, and had 3 people strike up conversations with something to that effect. ie: "How many pills you had tonight?" I hate how electronic music is so associated with with drugs. :( When I'm there, the music and the atmosphere is enough to give me a natural high as it is. I don't need the help. I think Byrin can attest to the fact that I danced way harder than my legs told me I could. :) One DJ in Room 3 (There were 3 separate rooms with different DJs, you could just choose the genre you liked) was pushing the crowd so hard. That was such a great set - Citrus and Mikey Da Roza from Calgary. I think it was the only act for which I stayed on the floor for the entire set-about an hour and a half. AND it was at about 4am, so I was already pretty drained as it was! 8O :o

We were pretty much drained by the time 5:45am rolled around. We sat around for a bit, chilled on the upper balcony overlooking the main room...I figured it was time we should get in line to get our coats. A good thing too. We "lined up" (it was more of a giant mass of people gathered around the counters) at 6:00am, and walked away with our coats at 6:40am. It was crazy, they were losing the tags for coats, so they'd just hold them up and yell, "THIS ONE?" The girl next to me made some sarcastic comment to the effect of, "Hey that coat looks nicer than mine. I'll take it." She was right. I'm sure someone left without their jacket that morning.

This other really cute girl who was just in front of me was stressing out over the disarray behind the counter. Some people were pushing from behind and holding their tickets over our heads and such...I managed to get them to just be patient, because it wasn't going to speed things up at all. Anyway, the girl was getting pretty flustered, and I was trying to remain cheerful to lighten the general mood of those around me.

Her: "Fuck! I've never seen anything so pathetic in my life. This is an utter joke."

Me: "Yeah....well, would it help the situation if we made out?"

Her: *hesitant look*....*cracks a smile*...*laughs*, "Thanks, I needed that." *kiss on cheek*

Then I got our coats and got the fuck out of there. It was chaotic to the say the least.

Byrin and I had just enough time before we caught the bus to grab a pita and a sub from a convenience store...you know the ones. The kind that you find in plastic packaging, and are "guaranteed fresh"? Mine was pretty mediocre, but I was really hungry so it didn't matter. I don't know how Byrin's was...I think he said it was "sufficient". :?

We got back home at 8:30am or so, leaving us 3 hours to sleep before we had to meet his parents at WEM for his ride home. I talked with my brother for a few minutes, then crashed hard in my bed. For whatever fucking stupid reason, I woke up at 10:30am instead of 11:30am...clocking about 2 hours of sleep total. I killed some time, ate some miniwheats, and eventually walked with Byrin as a partially conscious duo over to WEM.
We met his parents indeed, we parted ways, I took a brisk walk back to my house...entirely awake. I couldn't sleep when I got back. At all. I don't know what the hell is wrong with my inner clock, but it was totally convinced that I'd rested enough. Fuck, I wanted nothing else but to sleep, but no damn way was it going to happen. :?

Alberta celebrates "Family Day" on Monday the 21st. Most businesses are closed, there's no school...it's basically just another long weekend. To celebrate this glorious day, my brother and I booked it out to my parents' place for a party with family and friends. It was great...I saw some cousins I haven't seen in ages, talked with their boyfriends about footbag...just good times all around. In the end, after multiple boardgames and plenty of laughter, I got to bed at about 3:30am. THEN the next morning, I wake up at 7:15am to the sound of people upstairs making breakfast. I couldn't ignore the cacophony of pots and pans, so I got up, again having less than 4 hours sleep. I was freakin' exhausted, but there was french toast and sausage and bacon and eggs and everything deliciously Family Day Breakfast-Worthy upstairs on the table. :)

It really was delicious. Delectable, even.

We stuck around for awhile, and I drew a freakin' AWESOME perspective image on my little cousin's magnadoodle. Y'know, those white boards with filings inside or something, and you use a magnet pen to draw on it, and there's a sweepy thing underneath to erase it? Here, one of these:

Image

I drew the inside of a dingy subway tunnel on it, with shading and everything. There was a train, and the platform, and turnstiles, and a waiting area, and vending machines, and stairs leading up...I really wish I'd taken a picture. I'm not really an artist, but I'm pretty resourceful, and sometimes when I get a picture in my head, it just flows out.

*cough cough*

So yeah, we headed home, and at around 8pm I FINALLY got some sleep.
Just to tally:

Between Friday 9am and Monday 8pm: Approximately 8 hours of sleep total.

It was a good weekend.

Tuesday's shred was outlined aboe by Ben. We intended to film Sick 3's and stuff but no one played exceptionally well. Rory hit some long tiltless stuff, and I started the session with at LEAST 70 tiltless, but other than that, it was weak weak weak.

Though we did have some fun talking about how old Greg Nelson is, and how it's fantastic that he still kicks...I don't remember who, *coughBENcough* but one of us made the comment that he hit on their grandmother. Rory followed it up, "Now GFSmoothie's my Grandpa!"

*laughter*

"Now I can far osis!"

*more laughter*

Though not a ton was hit, it was actually a really fun session. Just pure silliness.

I should post more often so that my posts aren't novel-esque. :)

That ice arena made me sick. :(

Despite suffering from the snifflies I decided to play some foosbag tonight. I hit some more osii and a bunch of ducking stuff. Ducking clipper > spinning clipper is my new fav link. My favorite run of the night was something like this:

muted pixie clipper > osis > pdx mirage > plo > pixie ss clipper > osis > osis
Rory "Tophat" Dawson

Well its been awhile. Im off to Vancouver Tomorrow to play net and check out Jim Derricots band play. Im so excited to play net! Yippee.

Anyways. No real freestylin this week, been busy at work, but ive decided i will learn how to use the other side of my body. That is my new goal for the remainder of the year. We will see how it progresses. Tournament is looking good and organized. That should be fun, even if there is no net :( Might try and kick freestyle tomorrow afternoon for a bit in downtown van with kirk or matt (I talked to greg, but he is injured) so we will see what happens. I hope we can get back to our regular kicks on Tuesdays (Kevin?, Rory?) and some other day of the week. And, if any net people read these, i need a partner for the green cup.

Cheers

Definitely tuesdays.

Also with this A-Channel thing.

Rory, would it be possible to ask if it's alright to "advertise" the footbag demos we've been doing? I know we missed a couple weeks there due to sickness and stuff, but is that still on?

I had the most anti-climactic session ever tonight.

I footed at LEAST a dozen new tricks, the majority of which are really tough, some of which were 6's and 7's...just ugh.

I did manage to hit Sailing ss Butterfly, and the first 2/3rds of my TV routine dropless.

Here's some of what I footed, but I'm sure there's more. It was just so many...ludicrous. I intend to hit them in the next month. :)

Blurry Drifter
Atomic Drifter
Alpha Atomic Drifter
Atomic Torque
Alpha Atomic Torque
Alpha Atomic Whirl
Pixie Whirling Swirl
Atomic Ducking Butterfly
Atomic Ducking Mirage
Atomic ss Double Switch
Mullet (again)

:/

THEY WILL BE MINE.

Also, I'm really damn nervous about the A-Channel spot. I want to have fun, but I also want to do well. I think I might dumb down my routine a bit so that it's easier for me to hit.

I tried hitting the final string today of Smear > Atom Smasher > rpt > DLO > Eggbeater > DLO > Pigbeater.

I couldn't get past Eggbeater. :(

I'm so nervous! If I shred tonight with Edmonton folks, all I'm going to do is different parts of my routine.

I really, really, really want to have 1 drop or less.

Hmm, havent been here in a while.

Last nite I had s SOLO session. I havent kicked by myself in a looooooong time. It was entertaining. Trying to practice my winning sick 3 intermediate for shredmonton. Busted out some cool new links and tricks

Reverse Twirl -> Paradox Whirl
Ducking Paradox Illusion

I still cant seem to duck set on my flipside because my stupid clipper set is ridiculous, so im gonna stick with being one sided ;)

Getting close to barrage and paradon (or double down, or whatever the hell it is called), so thats good.

Nailed my Sick 1 trick 4 or 5 times, so that is coming along nicely.

Tomorrow me and rory are playing net, Im glad he is seeing the true power of the dark side! muhahahaha.

Green Cup is only 2 weeks away! Any NoCal shredders going to check it out? After i get whipped by manu or PT or whichever lucky pool draw I get id be up for some shred, so drop me a line.

Cheers
