Yeah it's a shame. He's definitly one of my favourite writers.

I didn't hear that he killed himself though - just that he shot himself - but it seemed to be suggesting that it was an accident.

For those who don't know - Hunter S Thompson was a journalist who wrote mainly during the 60s and 70s. He wrote a lot about politics and was a strong activist for the left. He also did a lot of drugs and wrote about that a little too - is most famous work is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - which was made into a film in the late 90s staring Johnny Depp - however most of his work is much more political than that movie. :(

He actually says that book was loosly based on the truth - rather than being exactly what happened too - He was much more into politics than drugs I think. ;)

thompson was a freelance writer. he wrote for rolling stone, various papers, sports illustrated, blah blah blah. any one who doesn't know who he is should read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" or if you're a lamo, rent it... Johnny Depp plays him. mmm, Johnny Depp, so hot right now. you know, todd!

Better yet - read something like "the great shark hunt" which is a collection of essays he wrote through out the sixties and seventies and gives a much better impression of both Hunter S Thompson and the political struggles he was involved in - Fear and Loathing in Washington is also pretty cool although only if you're into politics - it's all about Watergate...
