.mp4 vs the world

Post by habitat »

Alright, I'm just making a poll on what other people think about the .mp4 format for footbag videos. I'm sure this has said/talked about/done before, but I'm posting it now . . .

I personaly don't like the .mp4, why? I have trouble watching them at home (most likely my comps fault, no one elses), I can't watch them at school (very fast computers, where I watch most of my videos, they just won't play), and the quality/size ratio doesn't seem all that great (could be wrong, but most .mp4s' I have encountered have all been fairly large/too large)

Which file types does everyone prefer? IMO, .wmv seems to be the best, what does all of modified think?

I didn't vote, as there wasn't an "anything under QuickTime option." I personally like things I can watch with QuickTime (mp4, mov, mpg/mpeg, avi) due to the ability to freeze frame and play through very slowly. I can't stand Windows Media Player, as the Mac version sucks.

I like WMV and .AVI. I voted for .avi because I like to run some .avi movie under Virtualdub and watch some scenes frabe by frame.
I don't like Mp4 and other formats to play under QuickTime, because I can't watch them in full screen mode...

WMV all the way! I can't watch AVI. I need to download the right equiment.

Perosnaly, I think we should clear the earth of any non-easy use file types that don't agree with my coputer so I don't have to download a damn thing!

Or I just go download it.

It's late. I need to hop off to bed.
I think I going to take over Canada. You should help.

For frame-by-frame shit and slowmo's, Zoomplayer will do the job.
Great player, very small, VERY configurable and spywarefree.

It plays slowmotion for almost everything (except for .wmv).
That's one of the reason's I dislike wmv. I try to avoid everything
Microsoft (screw me, I'm running XP), and I haven't found a way yet
to convert wmv to DVD video format, which sucks really.
I like to watch shred in my living room on the big screen.

I'm especially happy if people put out their vids in mpg, because this
will be viewable on basically every computer/dvd player nowadays.
Or anything that isn't wmv. I know, wmv gives good results, but it's
often a problem for mac users, and there's loads of other codecs that
will offer the same results if you play with the options a bit.

wmv sucks because different codecs get used in the video compression.

Mplayer will play almost anything, plus a third of the wmv files I feed it.

I like mpg2, mpeg, mpg, qt, mov

Basically anything that plays in the quicktime player is universally available.

i think all you guys are wrong, mp4's quality is brililant and WMV files suck you can't pause and play them from random spots easily (atleast on Mac for sure).

on flipsider i had to manually copy the link and paste it in quicktime for it to work but when it did the quality made up for the hassel for sure.

MP4 is the wave of the future!

Is it just me, or does the quicktime player not have a fullscreen function?

Ctrl-F for fuck's sake!!!!! 'esc' to exit. Or you could wiggle your mouse a little bit over to 'Movie > Full Screen' at the top of the QuickTime player. The thing about Apple is everything is logical; that must be why you guys are having problems- been on Windows for too long. Also, I found out how to remove QT's nag screen- very, very simple- I posted it on Modified a while ago. Just search 'nag AND screen'.

I too am sick of having to download codecs. Anything under QuickTime is my choice for the same reasons already mentioned. I *can* play basically any .wmv on my Mac, but if I want to pause or god forbid rewind a few seconds, WMP has a stroke. Even when I worked on PC, I had problems with WMP in full screen mode- would always magically pop out of it.

What's the big deal about downloading QuickTime one freakin time?! It's not like they add updates so often like DivX or some others that you have to keep updated to watch their movies. I digress.

I run linux.

Ctrl+F doesn't do anything in windows quicktime (at least not the free one... is it purchasable?), and the 'Movie' menu you mentioned contains the sizing options normal, half and double.

...

I love your intensity man. I wish that shit could be bottled and sold.

Edit: In responce to your edit... Nah, you're not the only one.

Ellis was obviously in less than the best of moods when he wrote that post, i've seen him write many a positive post.

James you have a serious generalising problem, I know many of the top freestylers are very positive, the only one I can think of who i've 'heard' isnt is Ryan Mulrony, no offence to him or his fans though.

As far as video formats go, no body seems to have done much research on the subject or no anything about how well each format maintains quality when encoded and which is easiest to use etc.

Therefor I expect almost every vote made has been biased by those that dont know how/are too lazy/ are not able to download codecs or players for some formats, or have just had quicktime shoved in their face by mac or wmp shoved at them by microsoft.

As there are far more Windows users around then Mac users ofcourse the poll has swayed towards wmv.

I voted avi as most of the movies that are uploaded to the net are encoded in .avi so I expect its the most widely used/well compressed of the formats, however I know little about the subject so my opinon also is biased.

Basicly the bottom line is this is a ridiculous poll and the results mean little. Im sorry if in saying that i've burst some bubbles.

Yes.

And James, we all have our temper about us, but all the top freestylers "assholes"? I might venture to call Pete a top freestyler, and he's like the nicest guy I have ever met. Oh, and Daryl Genz, he's actually given me the shirt off his back. You'll meet him in a few hours. Great guy.

Anyway, no harm meant. See you tonight.

Best signature ever! Don't change it!

Seriously though, sorry to have offended, and sorry my advice was useless. I don't know why ctrl-F doesn't work. Maybe it's only on QT Pro... Yep, just found this in the QT manual, "To activate Full Screen mode in QuickTime Pro, Press Command-F (in Windows, Control-F) or choose Movie > Full Screen." Sorry bout that.

Actually I was in a fine mood. It was just a little rant (I thought innocent and harmless), which I think everyone is entitled to from time to time. I forget how strong a few exclamation points can make an entire post seem. Don't take it personal.

Shit, my better judgement says I should just leave it alone, but screw good judgement.

Top freestylers aren't the only ones throwing around unkind comments at random on the footbag forums. Some newbie recently called my ripsteins "really ugly" (nevermind that they're much cleaner than those they were compared so unfavorably to). Yeah, it made me upset to hear it, despite it being prefaced with that weak catch-all excuse of "In my opinion..." So what's the matter James? A little negativity is so bad that you can't rise above? Gotta fight fire with fire? I guess you've just shown that you've got what it takes to be a top freestyler.

Personally, I think the problem is the forum. Its not the most negative one around, not by far, but something about saying stuff on the internet brings out the worst in people. What is it about this place that makes people feel like its okay to say stuff like that? I don't know. Maybe its a result of all the confusion and frustration over the various kinds of video formats. And what the hell's a codec anyway?

Anyway, don't be too quick to pass sentence on Montreal. Its actually a very nice city. I look forward to visiting it again. This all kind of reminds me of one of the better on-line fights, wherein one freestyler announced that another was banned from San Diego. Ahh, good times, good times...

ps. You had all better not show your faces in Bridgewater. In fact, you're all banned from New Jersey!

Listen ya'll -> you can get quicktime pro serials from http://www.cracks.am (if it's still up n' running)

-> you can play virtually any file on virtually any OS (some of the BSD's and SUN might not have players) using VLC. (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)

seriously, just download it. It'll play anything, has a nice full screen mode but doesn't have frame by frame unfortunately (but quicktime does! hah!). Not only that, but with a little tweaking you can use it to convert and to save streaming media. how cool is that shit?

okay, whatever. this wasn't a useful post.

ps - fuck .wmv.

i'm all for anything i can play in QT. i hate wmv's, for the same reasons elli already posted, but i always ask erik to make duplicates in wmv since every one seems to like that.

PS Ellis you do sorta often come across pretty harsh online, I know you are spouting logic but I can see how it can get taken the wrong way.
