I remember Jin from like 3 years ago, when he won like 6 rap battles in a row on that 106 and Park show. This was before 8 Mile. I heard his album wasn`t that great though? It`s too bad he has to spend so much time defending his ethnicity, but at the same time it helps promote him, so double edged sword. But yeah, boy has skills.

Aw man, I feel so sorry for the last dude.

Hahah I can just picture him thinking "SHIT! What rhymes with tiger??" Good think he covered his tracks shortly after by declaring "I don't mess up" or whatever.

Jin really is quite good.

I don't recall which one it was but one of them just made Chinese stereotypes the whole time through and the crowd just ate it up. Were the things he was saying not totally racist??

The guys that go first also rarely really freestyled, that one guy even had props! You can't freestyle the two props that you brought with you.

I was really impressed by Jin's ability to make good solid insults, much of it didn't feel too prefab.

I wonder how much of those "freestyles" is winging it. Or maybe it is like when we "freestyle", it's not like we all hit unique links every link, right? We recycle combos we like alot.

Hmm.. I wonder if rappers are as open about this.

Are there rap BOP's? "yo, yo. check it,"

hah, the stuff about moms and sisters and the self promotion ones might have come up before. I like it when the bust out responses to things the other guy said in rhyme. Jin was hilarious. I just wish rap battles weren't always so oppositional, it really limits the topic matter. I'd like to hear a rap battle based on content and skills and maybe a little zinger in there once in a while, but this "I'm gonna do this, you're so weak, blah blah, my shirt is nicer than yours, you smell"... I dunno, not for me.

those clips were cool, though.

Good point Matt.

I think the battle atmosphere was one of the things that originally turned me off breakdancing.

Had the vibe not been so negative and "look at me prove I am better than you" I may have run with it.

However the hip-hop world is nothing more than endless penis measuring so I fucked off.

I was always under the assumption that battle rap was opposing rappers trying to "out rhyme" each other, but after the battle, there is nothing but respect for the others skills, not a penis measuring contest.

The battle is "negative" but afterwards it's not. But hey, I'm not a freestyle battle mc

yeah, rappers are trying to our rap each other, and they know it's not serious. I'm sure guys aren't getting into fights after battles all the time. but still, they focus on the same stupid subject matter for every battle. If it's understood that they're not actually serious about the aggression, and they're just having a rhyming competition, you'd think they could diversify a little bit. I guess it would have a different kind of energy without the opposition, but jeeeeeeeeeeeez...

I just watched 7 rap battles, and I've had enough. I love words, I'd like to see more... Just makes me want to work on my freestyle myself so I can battle people with something different than, I'm bigger and better than you.

i think the best part of battle rapping is when a the 2nd mc takes what the 1st said and totally turns it around on them, classic

What, you lose? I don't get it, but I've heard that having your penis in close proximity to another man's will make you turn gay, and then God will hate you and you will be doomed to an eternity of fire and brimstone.

...

And on what Mosher said about recycling links. If you compare Jin's raps, I think you can notice that they've got certain lines that are stock, lines just to put out there in between throwing down some legit freestyle insults.

ie: "'Cause I'm ill when I'm spittin'."

Or something close to that, anyway.

i agree totally. and im also suspicious of even some of the 'legit' freestyle insults...i mean, there is a fine line between making up the insults literally word-by-word as you spit (that being one extreme), coming up with them line-by-line, while filling in with the generic stock lines (that being basically how it is), and coming up with a number of 2-line rhyming insults before the battle even starts that you mix and match for each battle (that being the far extreme, that im slightly inclined to suspect actually happens, but maybe im just jealous of his ability to come up with stuff really fast. and the size of his penis.)
