Give Lon Your Support!

Post by brian relly »

Modified,

As some of you may know, Lon Smith quit drinking alcohol last summer, and now he's trying to stop smoking as a New Year's Resolution.
Lon hasn't been getting near the amount of support he deserves or needs for this commendable feat. I encourage you all to email your support and encouragement to him today so that he keeps down the right path.

Good luck to everyone who wants to try and quit the ganja or booze. Just to let you know, if you want to it can be done... I am a weeks worth of proof without weed!!!

Sometimes you just need a new perspective on life and quitting something like: weed, booze, pills, caffeine, or sleeping will do that to you. Even quitting the internet can change things..

Am I blind or was Ken's tongue-in-cheek post to this thread, "Give Ken your support", simply removed without notice?

Yeah, my post was deleted by the mods. I didn`t get an explanation, but maybe it was Sam`s post that did it?

Anyway, the whole reason I spoofed this thread is because I thought the original thread was really weird, and somewhat troubling. I mean, we all treat guys like Lon and Vasek as celebrities in the community, but it`s important we remember they are real people, and that the internet is open to everybody, not just footbaggers. Have you ever googled the name of a girl you were about to go on a date with? Don`t you think some employers google the names of job applicants?

Maybe Lon and other pros are OK with everybody knowing they smoke(smoked) pot, but if they aren`t, how would they feel about a topic being created online discussing it? And the whole e-mailing him support thing... if you are a personal friend of Lon`s, then yeah, mailing him is cool. But if you ARE a close friend of his, you wouldn`t need a topic on the forums to remind you. And if you AREN`T a close friend of Lon`s... well, imagine how weird you would feel if you opened your mailbox one day and found like 20 e-mails from people you don`t even know, wishing you good luck on quitting an illegal habit you didn`t know the world knew you did.

Granted, `Lon Smith` is a real common name, so if a future date or employer of his wanted to google him, they probably wouldn`t find this thread. But maybe its just the fact that I`m paranoid and currently looking for a job, that I worry about future employers googling `Ken Somolinos` and finding some topic like this. Hell, right now the first search result for my name produces a picture of me holding up a beer and looking drunk. That can`t be good. And even if people outside the footbag community never stumbled on this thread, it`s still not cool. If you are in the footbag scene long enough, you slowly pick up on a lot of things, like who does what drugs, who does no drugs, who is gay, who wears a toupee, etc. But I bet you that there are at least a few footbaggers who read this thread, who didn`t know beforehand that Lon smoked pot. I know Stephen posted this thread with the best of intentions, but was he right in making this information public domain?

All I`m saying is, we must never forget that footbag celebrities are real people too, and just because they are well-known in the footbag community, doesn`t give us the right to publicly discuss their sexual/drug-related tendencies. Keep this in mind when PMing and mailing them too. I receive a fair number of PMs and mails from people I`ve never met, but normally they just ask footbag questions, and I answer. But if somebody I never met before were to mail me something like: `I heard you are trying to quit your habit of seducing random 16 yr olds on the beach. Good luck with that` I would be freaked out.

Good post Ken (as usual). You mirrored many of my thoughts quite nicely on this one.
