Bone fractures

Post by Seath »

I just read this:
http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0279.htm

namely this:
Sometimes called 'crescendo pain,' stress-fracture pain tends to build up gradually as you exercise, beginning as an annoying irritation during the first few minutes of your workout and becoming a throbbing torment as you continue to train. There is usually little of the numbness, weakness, and swelling associated with compartment syndromes, and pain is usually not present when the athlete is at rest. Sometimes, there is a specific point of tenderness in the lower leg, often felt on the inside of the calf when deep pressure is applied with the fingers. Often, the bone will actually hurt when it is tapped near the damaged area, and occasionally a hard nodule will appear on the surface of the bone at the trouble site.
this = me
The bone deterioration could be the result of using non-cushioning training shoes, exercising on very hard surfaces like concrete, or overtraining, but it could also be the result of poor nutrition (lack of calcium in the diet or impaired absorption of calcium)
hard surfaces, non-cushioned training shoes = me

Although it's often said that stress fractures take two to three months to heal, in reality six months may be required to restore the bone to normal and remove most traces of pain, and some patients require two years for a full recovery.
this = FUCK YOU IM NOT FUCKING QUITTING FOR SIX MONTHS

help me :(

yea, im going to be buying better shoes than lavers, but regardless if this is indeed what is ailing me, no shoe alone will heal it.

Ugh. CT 520s are like clunky boots to me. They made me feel like I was ripping my joints apart. I've said this before but the end of all pain for me was Spenco metatarsal pads:

they really cushion and distribute load across your entire forefoot unlike the other spenco insoles which pad your entire foot, unnecessary. I found lavers with these to be much more comfortable than the CTs.

k regardless, the shoe's are not the problem i face here. I have very good insoles in my lavers, and always have, but I'm looking for more info on bone fractures, anyone here ever have to deal with them?

I just want some more information before I go to the doctor about it, because it's not an easy task to xray for bone fractures.

I would just go to the doctor and see exactly what is going on. Reading stuff on the internet and listening to modified players which consist of mostly kids in high school or college will probably only make you worry more about it. Go to a professional and see exactly what you face and must do to fix it.

Yea, heh I should. I went to one right after worlds, he didn't help much, but I didnt say anything to him about the possibility of bone fractures so I guess another crack at the doc might be in order.

but I'd still like to know if anyone here has dealt with treating bone fractures before.

Best advice is to see a doctor. The doctor I saw in Japan spoke no English and didn`t want to x-ray my foot twice... he did it once and thought there was no fracture, but I`m not so sure. Anyway, what I did last year was lay off of it for 2 months, and Ice and elevate it everyday. But yeah, go see a competent doctor who speaks English. Best of luck to you.

Tissue-stress theory:
http://www.latrobe.edu.au/podiatry/tissuestressB.html

Pretty much:
Excessive stress over time to the bone may lead to fractures.
Reducing that stress won't cause fractures.
If a mild fracture occurs, reducing the stress to the affected tissue to the right degree will allow it to heal.
Depending on the severity of the fracture this could be achieved by increasing shock absorption (technique, footwear, insoles, orthotics to change biomechanics) or just not playing as much for a while.
