Modified Video Remixes

Post by mosher »

This was entirely Derrick's idea, I just thought it was a really good one so I started this thread.

He took a bunch of video clips from around the internet and compiled them into this video.

I think it would be so cool and easy for others to do this too, I am going to chop up my favorite shred clips into an ultimate mix too.

Here is his video:

GO MAKE ONE TOO!!!!!!! :D

I started making one of these a while ago, i think I might start again thanks to you. One thing I wasn't sure about though is how much people would be ok with me doing it. It seems like the footbag community is pretty cool with that kind of stuff though.

The people already posted the footage online for us to see in the first place right?

This is such a good idea. It's like a mix CD, but of shred videos. people should take their favourite one trick videos and make a really fast-edited new video...

How did you extract the video from .wmv files?

I use Premiere. Do I need a codec/plugin so that it recognizes wmv files? Also, I cannot export as wmv, which is realy annoying.

I end up exporting as something else like...I don't know, avi. And tehn I convert it in Windos Movie Maker. Which is stupid.

Any help?

Don't know what premiere you have, but Premiere Pro 1.5 can export as wmv's...

Well I didn't know, but I can see some people saying something like, "I poured so much time into finding the good footage from that event, and now you are getting credit for it." Stupid people like that don't play footbag though I guess.

i don't know how the people that created the original videos would feel about this. I know that if i made a video and posted it that i would be pretty pissy if someone took clips from my video and made it their own, whether it was put on the internet for free or not. The creators of those videos put forth a lot of time and effort in filming, compiling, adding the perfect song, choosing effects. Creating videos is a time consuming task. These people have put hours upon hours in putting forth these videos all the way to their inception as just ideas in the beginning. I am totally against hacking apart videos to make them your own. And feel that this topic should not even be here.

I dont think this is about making a video "your own". Its about sharing shred, and ideas for video editing..
If it was my video or me shredding i would be happy, if you just take it as a compliment it should not be a problem..

I think alot of people are viewing this all wrong.

The footage has all been posted online for people to do whatever the fuck they want with it.

If they want to go through and pick out their favorite bits and make a movie from it that's awesome.

It's not like I am downloading any movies, renaming them and then posting them as my work.

I mean OBVIOUSLY no one is trying to make the footage thier own or claim orignal rights to it.

Frankly I would be HONORED if someone thought my video was good enough to warrant seeing parts of it again.

Don't worry Evan, I won't chop up any of your masterpieces.
You can save all your footage for your big budget DVD's since posting online for a few measley comments isn't 'worth it' any more for you.

This is lame, I hate it when people bitch about something not even close to bitch-worthy and then I have to tell them that what they were bitching about wasn't worth it and now here *I* am bitching.

I don't think it's been posted yet, but Derrick sent me his video of just big tricks from flipsider, and it's SO COOL.

I don't think anybody can argue once they've seen the coolness that is an all big tricks video.

I can understand how an editor would feel odd that somebody was cutting up their video, but you have to consider it the way a musician would. If somebody samples a beat from your song, are they stealing your hard work? Have they made your song any less good or less powerful?

Also, Tom, I don't think it's productive to tell people who have genuine concerns about the reproduction of their work to "quit bitching". This is something that most people who aren't famous have never had to deal with before. The problem is that people feel intensly protective of their videos, and view them not necessarily as 'art' but as something they made.

That being said, I believe that remixes are a really powerful tool, and probably good for footbag in general, as well as good for the people who are being remixed. What could possibly be a better indication of your place in the footbag video heirarchy than being imitated? If there are people making secondary use of your footage, that means that you have impressed a wide range of people with your talent. In a community as SMALL as this one, that's an impressive achievement.

Now, if anybody specifically asks someone NOT to use their footage, I think we should respect that wish. It's disappointing, but completely valid. Truth be told it is THEIR footage, and no Tom, they didn't just put it out there for us to do what we wanted with it. In this society there is an implicit copyright on any works created. It's unfortunate but true. That's why I like to release all my creative efforts under a creative commons liscense that specifically states "no rights reserved".
