I Stopped Downloading Vids (No Video)

Post by Splint »

When I first started coming to Modified I was on a strict tie constraint and I only came on to download some vids to see cool new shit (usually Mirken) and occasionally get into arguments about certain Shred issues (usually with Mirken  ).

The time constraints loosened up for a while, but they are back now :( .

Anyway, this topic is really about how shitty it is that I have such little time and can't waste it downloading vids. I wanted to download the Vids fro CSS6 and the one of Flash, but it takes about a half-hour to download. Even on my brand-spanking-new computer and I have Highspeed internet. That just sucks.

I don't go into the Sick 3 competitions either because most of the time it takes 5 minutes to download a 10 second clip. I know that most people host on Footbag.org and that it's always slow, but it seems that the files are always enormous too.

All I'm really saying is that it just sucks not to be able to get quicker downloads of the vids and if anyone has a solution for vid makers and downloaders to follow then that would be cool.

I miss good vids  .

If you have broadband, get a dowload manager like GetRight, copy and paste the half dozen links to the 50Mo+ files you'd like to see, then go to work.
When you get home if you have time, go and watch what you've downloaded.... That's what I do at work. i usually download in the morning and watch when I get back from lunch.

I don't really care about speeds.
With a DSL Flatrate, I'll just download them overnight, because I'm online 24/7 anyway.

give me a faster server than footbag.org, and its on  I personally can't afford anything better. I also try to make my file sizes small and then big for everyone to enjoy, as im on a 28.8k modem

As for the sick 3 comps, I agree, I dont see how people come out with even 1mb file sizes, all of mine have been between 200-400 kb, and that isnt shit, for any type of connection. people seem to hate .wmv, but they seem to be the smallest I've come across so i will continue to use them so everyone can download my videos

lol chris.

A good solution is simply to leave some vids downloading overnight or while you do something else. Remember, you dont need to be there while they download.

yeah, thats pretty much what i do. whenever i go to modified, i start downloading a video first, then while it is downloading, i go to other parts of the forum and discuss other stuff while the video finishes downloading. though i think Splint's basic problem is that he doesnt have enough time at all, in general. but yeah, you could do the other (off-computer) stuff that you NEED to do while vids are DLing. it depends on how desperate you are for vids, and how important it is to you.

If anyone is interested (in making some sort of donation), I'd be willing to get a virtual private server with all the space and bandwidth we need to host all of these videos when they come out to take the load off of footbag.org and to get them out to people quickly.

I could also, on this server, host websites that people would like to make with your own domain and all.

It would probably be about $28-$32 dollars per month to run the server or about $384. If we could get like 35 people who'd be willing to chip in $10, we could do this.

Edit: There are also cheaper options but the above is probably the most flexible and has all the bandwidth we'd need.

Yep, fucking wmv SUCKS, the quality is always sooo crappy and it seems everybody encodes them with WAY too much kb/sec. you only need 1000-1100 kb/sec.

PS to keep on topic: we could start a thread with VIABLE, CORRECT video encoding tips

PPS Much love to all who puts energy into videos... :D

No, I don't have anything to do with M$ If they offered me a job, I wouldn't take it (though I don't think they would offer me one :))

Heh, I must be a mac nerd because I'm pretty excited about Tiger! Can't wait to use H.264 codec in FCP!

With relation to this topic, I won't be able to download videos either. I can't afford high speed anymore; had to switch to a basic cable connection which has a 1 GB monthly limit and transfers at 36 KB/s (300 kbps). :(

Hey Guys..

On http://www.footbagdenmark.dk we get a 10Gbit connection with 500 MB server space for less than 6$ a month. They (the web-hotel) tolerate at least 15 GB monthly downloads, which is quite alot if you make small productions.. :P
