Torture for truth ?

Post by DoctorJay »

In Germany there was a trial in which the former head of the police was punished to pay about 10000 euros because he threatened a guy ( this guy was guilty of mudering a son of a bank manager ) to convince him to tell where he kept the child of the bank manager. To this date the dead of the teenager was not clear.

How do you think about this fact that in many countries torture is a normal method to question their suspects?

In Germany most people think that the head of the police should be pronounced not guilty.
In my opinion the punishment was not severe enough - there should be no exception to torture a suspect which guilt is not sure.
Of course after the punishment ( some kind of prison it should be also forbidden to torture anybody).

I agree with you that torture is never an acceptable means of interrogation.

America now has a law which allows it to take citizens and foreign nationals it considers a threat to countries (like saudi arabia) that allow torture so they can do thier dirty work there, in a legal setting, i'll dig up a link if i can find it.

Yeah torture should never be permitted under any circumstances. I can't see any exceptions to this. If you allow torture under "special circumstances" there will always be people who have a different interpretation of what those circumstances are - but if all torture is outlawed - everybody will be treated humanely.

i agree, if torture is allowed people would confess to things they are not guilty of. torture is no good, nor is the patriot act.

http://www.commondreams.org/cgi-bin/pri ... 001-21.htm - Canadian national claims to be a victim of US "torture abroad" tactics.

Not the article i had seen and thought i could find, but it's disturbing none the less.

Discussion motivator,

Serial rapist/murderer is caught, he tells police that he abducted the most recent missing young girl, but refuses to tell police where she is tied up with no access to food or drink. He in fact taunts them with it.
In my opinion not much would be unacceptable to save the girl.

Thoughts.....

"This so-called ill treatment and torture in detention centers, stories of which were spread everywhere among the people, and later by the prisoners who were freed … were not, as some assumed, inflicted methodically, but were excesses committed by individual prison guards, their deputies, and men who laid violent hands on the detainees."
While I could imagine Donald Rumsfeld saying something like this, this quote was pulled from the achieves of Rudolf Hoess, SS commandant at Auschwitz.

Whoa, that was surpising. 8O When I read the quote, I thought it was something HighDemonSlayer wrote.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought I would get a mention sooner than this.

I ,suprisingly, have several reasons why torture should not be used, but I'll just give the cynical response now(the reasons will take longer to write):

Everybody does it.
Officially ban it, to quiet the critics.......then do it anyway.

Image is everything, if there isn't a picture or video, then it never happened.

I oppose Gonzalez as Attorney General. If "torture documents" are enough to keep him out of the office, good.

Keeping drilling him.

Some people might suggest that it'd be better to ban it and then not do it. When you're fighting wars to protect the freedoms of other people it's probably a good idea if you don't commit the same crimes that the people you are trying to get rid of committed especially if those crimes are your justification for trying to get rid of them.

I think America has a closet facination with torture.

The passion did very well at the box office, and yet the country doesn't exhibit the type of lifestyle to be expected of a culture facinated with Christ and following his life.

It does however exhibit the type of behavior I would associate with a culture facinated by tortue, such as was portrayed in the passion.

Hmmm.

Hmmm.
I wonder how well a film about one of the joyful mysteries would have done in the box office, as opposed to the sorrowful mysteries like Mel cashed out on.
