What is your fav. planet and why?
What is your fav. planet and why?
I guess I was just bored and wondered what other people thought. Ever since I took astronomy class and found out about Venus, it has been my favorite planet. I like it because it looks pretty and is thought to be all heavenly and all that, but then when you get into it's atmoshpere you crush and burn because of the intense pressure and sulfuric acid rain. There are also volcanoes and lava all over the place IF you make it to land.

Oooohhhhh.... How sweet.

Ryan, you are such a sarcastic douche. Honestly, can't you take a hint? Nobody on this message board even likes you. You think you are so good at footbag? You aren't, you fucking suck man... And you smoke the pole, you dirty polesmoker.
PS. You are banished from the CCFC for attempting to seduce the peoples champion... Matt aint a homo you homo. Honestly when was the last time you kissed a girl?
On the subject of planets, my favourite would have to be Uranus, but only if you are a girl, and are hot.

Uranus has that wacky axis of rotation which is pretty cool.
For me, it has to be a tie between Jupiter and Earth. Jupiter is cool because it`s like a miniature sun. If only a few conditions were different, it would have been a star. So that`s cool. On top of that, it has a bunch of moons, and they are all pretty different from each other. It`s kinda like a mini solar system. Jupiter also has that humongous raging storm (the big red dot) which has been going on for ages, and is several times the size of earth.
But yeah, Earth ties it just because of the diversity. Other planets (Mars, Venus, Uranus, Pluto... although Pluto isn`t really a planet) all seem rather uniform on the surface, but Earth is this explosion of diversity. Part of the planet is water, part of it is land, it has an atmosphere, there`s great variation in climates, incredible biodiversity, etc.

string theory is the worst theory EVER. it explains NOTHING. string theory people can't even decide how many dimensions are rolled up in the fifth one (or whatever. stupid string theory). besides that, it technically doesn't qualify as a theory at all - to be a legitimate theory it has to predict something. for example, when einstein proposed general relativity, it was predicted that light from other stars would bend around the sun, a measurable phenomenon. measurements were taken, bending was found and einstein's theory was "proved" (like gravity has been "proved").
string theory on the other hand couldn't predict it's way out of a paper bag vibrating in fifteen dimension. what you should really get into is loop quantum gravity (LQG). Loop quantum gravity defines reality is a set of interconnected nodes, much like a set of cellular automata (see wolfram's NKS) which are turing complete. LQG predicts a quantized space time (called 'spin foams'), reducing time and distance to smallest existing components, through which matter propigates. I know it sounds like nonsense, but it has several predictions which are provable (although have not yet been proved), for example stating that the planck distance is a quantized unit of matter - that no smaller amounts of matter exist, and that the smallest unit of time is 10E-49 seconds (i think). I know it's hard to imagine time being quantized, but does it make any less sense than quantized energy?
A lot of this sounds like crap, and I may be WAY off the mark here (my knowledge of quantum physics is limited, but i have a lot of friends who are into physics and my arguments with them have led to a fair amount of independant research) but I have yet to hear a rational valid explanation of string theory that convinced me otherwise. On the other hand, i've had elements of LQG confirmed by disparate sources, often bearing no relation to LQG, which is generally how theories are proved in the long run.

i kinda like mercury. its small, and veeery hot. its completely inaccurate, but an amusing picture...i always just picture myself sitting on a lawn chair on a planet that has a diameter of about 15 feet, and its all sunny and warm...even though the planet is much bigger...and thousands of degrees hotter. but hey, its my idea of paradise.

Although I agree that string theory is not a true physics theory because it is so incredibly hard to prove, the possibilities that it predicts are really amazing. I don't study physics myself nor do I follow anything about it regularly, but I will say that if string theory is correct our universe is completely different then what we understand it to be.
I've never heard of LQG, it sounds interesting enough. If you got a pretty good source about it, post it on here. If not I'll mess around on the net looking for some good sources on it at some point in time. And I wouldn't count string theory out just yet, yah its a bizarre and far fetched collection of ideas, some of which can be proven (ie. the fact that other dimensions do exist). But why would so many of todays great minded physics (Edward Witten being just one) researchers spend so much time with strings if it was complete junk?
