haha, but thats not exactly mainstream. or maybe just not around my way. i think the level of acceptance of 'homophobic language' that is a lot higher than that of racist language, especially in the younger age group. lots of people in our generation use 'gay' as a general negative word, but its extremely uncommon for racist terms to be used. its just what is more common that makes is slightly more acceptable.
I use "jew" all the time. "He jewed me half a gram." "That bartender tried to jew me out of my change." I don't mean it to be derogatory (sp?), it's just something I say. There are plenty of words that can offend but people use them everyday.

I have a cousin who lived in a small town (500ish). The word to use for anything (or anyone) bad there was nigger. Nobody meant anything by it, it was just the slang at that time and place.
Were they assholes? Nah, not really, just like none of you folks are assholes (for your vernacular). Were they ignorant? Fuck yah, just like you. Did they learn their lesson for it? Yep. You probably will too. Better to learn it today than from an employer or a mean drunk and his biddies.
