Hey Seath! I haven't talked to you forever

The main people who wanted to see footbag weren't there today. So we hacked and I did some random tricks. But I did teach one guy how to do a clipper stall. I was way impressed with him because all these guys have skater shoes on which are so round on the insides.

I played tonight two different times for about 25 min each. The first time I did a bunch of nfinities and got 4 in a row (sadly, my new record

). And this last time I worked a lot on clipper>ss mirage>legover>butterfly>rpt. I made sure to start on both sides and could do both sides before it dropped. Blah, I do sound confusing today.

I think my first real exciting growth spurt happened when I read somewhere that David had been drilling infinities and it made a huge impact on his game and I decided to do the same, it worked!

I played three times today: 30-40 min. each time. What a slow process.

To warm up I did 46 consecutive kicks (mostly inside kicks, some outsides) which is more than I've been able to do before. I'm getting those nice sharp little muscles on my calves again. When I'm walking up stairs or something I feel that soreness and I kind of like it because it reminds me to kick later.

I tried butterfly>ss butterfly which I've been able to hit on occasion before. I'm not going to try again for a while because my ankle isn't strong enough. ...yeah, that was scary.

I decided to go out in search of hacky sack. I went to two parks and no one was hacking. Then I drove through the college campus and no one was playing. So I decided to drive to Capitola. I walked down the sidewalk on the beach. I saw a few older guys (45-65 maybe) juggling four and five balls on a nice patch of grass and one guy was doing contact juggling. I asked them if there was another grassy area or park around because I was looking for some people who usually play hacky sack in the area and they said “that’s us!”

So I played hack for a while with these guys. They were really fun to play with, and better than a lot of hackers I’ve played with recently (in town, that is.) As we were talking about stuff I found out that one of them knows who Carol is and that she makes bags, but these guys are not in the scene. They said that they thought I looked like I was about 15. I looked like I was 16 a week ago... with every day it seems like I’m getting closer to Stephen’s age. At this rate, a week more and maybe we’ll be the same age… watch out young one

There was an older guy who I had talked to a few days earlier who showed up and knew how to do some pretty impressive hack tricks. He has very good control of the bag. He does a mirage kick sort of thing with his legs fully extended that looks really smooth. Then five or so guys who I had hacked with at school came by and joined the circle.

There were eight of us in the circle before. Then a 12 year old joined us. He was good at hack and he liked doing tricks. I wish he didn’t have to leave before I did the footbag demonstration for the group. I like how hackers try to get me to admit that footbag isn't *really* different from hacky sack. So I did a 12-15 min. demo explaining everything that I could. They asked about scoring and competing. And they wanted to know the craziest stuff I had ever seen. They had so many questions. I was happy with myself when I was showing them some tricks and my strings kept going. It felt so good, I was doing strings like toe>op toe> mirage>op toe>mirage>butterfly>same clip>ss mirage>op toe> op clip>osis> far legover>op clip>pdx mirage. I need to work on something that's horrible that I can't do: I can't set the bag with my right toe and do a right clipper. Same with the left side. Well, I can, but the timing's messed up and it looks like I've never tried it before. Haha, I just don't know how do. I can do toe set>op clip naturally. Anyway...I switched between playing hack and footbag for like two hours. We switched bags when it got too dark to see the dirt bag. I had my bright pink Grandma (Lon) Smith bag so we played with that because it was so much easier to see after dark. And the guys were so good – no toe pickups. And they respected the bags. Tuesday I'm going to start to teach one of the guys mirage because that's the one thing he was the most interested in.

Sunset was so pretty right on the water.

I've been playing almost every day since CSS6. My ability to spend more time playing is a combination of a.) my newly renewed sense of determination and enjoyment of footbag and b.) the overwhelming urge to find anything to do besides homework

I had the most fun session ever today. Matt Kain called me up out of the blue after a year and a half of him of not playing and asked if I wanted to play footbag. SCORE. He had the will of a contender. He was a little rusty and kind of bloody by the end, but before the day was done he managed to hit one consecutive butterfly. I sealed my first toe whirl. I couldn't do it again, and I couldn't do it in a string. I couldn't hit flip. I got close to both sides a bunch, but in general my flip whirl is nasty. Even when I'm concentrating on pointing my toe I can't. I blame the bad ankle for that ... and for everything else while I'm at it.

It was great; we played for about two hours. He's so funny, it was hard to play because I kept laughing the whole time. He's also a good teacher because he's able to explain the fundamentals of a move and what to practice to get ready to try it.

My Abshire has been well loved but one of the threads ripped so I'm going to retire it. It was my 1st 32 which was a birthday present from Zeke and it's the first bag I've had to retire.

Here's my favorite quote when thinking about footbag: "A specialist is not someone who just focuses on one thing, but someone who finds a way to relate that one thing to the rest of the world."

I have three midterms to work on/finish tonight... I'm guessing I'll be up late.

3/24/05

Lon took the bus to my town and we met up then had a session across the street in the church parking lot. I think we played for about an hour and a half (I think) and it was so much fun. I didn't do anything impressive, but he was stylish and smooth as always. He gave me some pointers and then we got some food and watched a bad movie.

We drove to Dat's school in San Luis Obispo and the three of us drove to Sam's house in LA for filming.

3/26/05

This afternoon when we did the first filming of the weekend. I wasn't in the scene that they were working on, so I was trying smear. I tried it a few times and it went okay but not great. I tried it again and--- you know how if you're used to doing legovers and you try to do a pickup your body will do the legover because that's what you're used to? Well I meant to do the mirage but my body went for a butterfly... and then it happened. I hadn't meant to go for butterfly. Yep, I was on the ground after what I was told was an enormous crack. It was the same ankle as I rolled on last time. It didn't hurt as much as last time, but I was so scared. That was this morning and now my ankle is the size of a grapefruit. I'll take pictures if it gets any more impressive looking. When you see the movie you'll notice that I have an ace bandage on my ankle because of the sprain.

Jeremy Mirken, Chris Pinkus, Sam, Lon, Dat, Chad, Amelia, Ted Anderson, Tim Shan, Tim (some other last name), Jeremy (not Mirken), Paul (from CalPoly), Ann, and a few other people were kicking at different points over the weekend. Who am I forgetting? Shoot. I'll figure it out later.

Tomorrow there's a session so at least I'll get to see really fun players play

Yeah, it's really swollen and starting to get slightly darker. I just hit my first pdx illusion and kept going for a few moves. I know I should be staying off of it, but I know what hurts and what puts extra pressure on it. After today's over I'll stop playing footbag for at least 3 weeks. My spring break starts on Monday so I won't have to be walking around school or anything.

It's beautiful outside so no matter what happens it'll be a good day.
