That sucks. Take some time off of it. Don't injure and injury! Spell the alphabet with your toe with your calf resting on something. Hope you feel better!

Thanks Evan :)

C'mon, you know me. That was just for the shock value for those out of the loop Wink Stop playing footbag. Get better.
Then play footbag.
You're right. I wasn't at all surprised since it was coming from you :)

Yeah Matt, I'm still in Ca. I don't think I'm going to be outside of California until later summer, if then even. And the ankle feels good but is still swollen, thanks for asking. But I can move it this time which means I can walk pretty normally which means it might heal up better this time. Hopefully I'll be able to get some of the crank back better than the last time, meaning that I can do some more strength training with it, meaning hopefully it'll get strong enough to not ROLL again.

Today Lon left. Last night I put my lavers and bags up in a storage area above my closet. Unless I do more filming, I'm definitely not going to use either of those until May- which sucks even more so because I just got two new bags and I happened to win a pair of lavers on e-bay. :x

This sprain is SO much better than that last one. When it happened, I guess Dat heard it from 20+ feet away and said that he thought it was someone breaking wood in the forest we were in. Crap, I'm going to be that person who goes on modified and doesn't even play. :?

I don't know what my deal was back in Nov. I posted that I hit bubba but I'm sure I was wrong about what it was. I hit my first bubba yesterday. I came close to spinning clippers, but it just wasn't going to happen.

Last entry for a while, thanks for reading and the support.

P.S. Don't forget to check Senor Grommet, Shredonlawn, and Jackbag's blog.

Edit: Hood, stitches in your head?!? You're going to have to tell me that story.

Edit (again): You should put your name & address in the postcard thread b/c Jeremy said that he's busy right now so I could take it over. How fun :)

I'm so sorry your injured Emily :( And sorry I couldn't make the filming. :x I hope you keep up the spirit and don't lose the determination I saw in Colorodo. Rest up and recoop, maybe train in the pool a bit like Lon, and then come back, train hard, and shred strong guiltless with the boys eventually. :) You can do it!

I'll come play with you for sure when your ankle heals. :D

My new story

Post by Moxie »

In my blog: Have you read about how I heard about that guy in Capitola who I thought was a footbagger who worked at the bikini shop, and he sent me next door and those people turned out to be my hack friends from school? And you know that when I first got to Santa Cruz I tried to meet up with the net people but none of them showed up, even though they all knew I was coming?

Well I stayed on their mailing list and the head of the group wrote to everyone on 3/29 saying that they want to kick on Sunday depending on what everyone else thought/said. I said to everyone on that mailing list that I'm a freestyler with a sprained ankle but I'd like to come out to meet people and watch them play. This guy AJ wrote me an e-mail:
I am not sure if I will make the Sunday kick but if I don't, I wanted you to know I would like to hook up and freestyle (as soon as your ankle is strong). I've kicked in Santa Cruz for years and the rumor of you, Laver wearer, has broken a sad drought of freestylers. My name is A.J. and I bounce back and forth between net and freestyle. I'm not very good at either, but I think I can hold my own. I think. Either way, the fellas in Capitola told me you were around and I have been waiting for the opportunity to play. Get well soon. Maybe see you Sunday. Maybe not.
And he left his e-mail and phone number. This was perfect timing because Dat decided to drive from school to visit me for the weekend. I sent out an e-mail to the people associated with the Santa Cruz Footbag Club on .org saying that Dat from out of town would be here on Sunday if anyone would want to freestyle in addition to playing net. Dat talked to Nate Maertens yesterday to ask him if he wanted to come out.

I told Dat when we were on our way there that I bet that they would ditch out again. And did they? YES. The leader of the group who was the one who suggested playing today didn't even show up. After a short time, this guy rode up on his bike and it turned out to be A.J. who was so thrilled to kick with freestylers again. Before I e-mailed the group, A.J. had no idea that there were any freestylers in the area, and he and Nate hit it off really well so I’m hoping they’ll with each other play often. I also met Theresa who showed up a little later. She's a very nice net player who just took up surfing so she doesn't want to get into freestyle this year.

See? This is fate, I feel like all is right and good in my town with footbag. People who should be playing are and they're meeting each other. It just took a little initiative.

Dat has been working on his style and it’s paying off. His strong side whirls look like it takes nothing to hit them (in the good way.) His flip will match soon. I didn’t know that he could hit whirling swirl, but he has been able to for a long time.

Dat's really good with articulating his thoughts, especially with footbag. One thing that he pointed out to me which is simple but no one does, is when you're telling someone, "do _____ faster," in most cases people mean sooner. And that helped me a lot with thinking about what people have meant in certain situations when they were giving me instructions.

Nate is working on the same stuff I’ve seen him work on the last few times (the only times?) that I’ve kicked with him.

A.J. was better than I had originally thought he’d be. His clippers need work, but he’s able to do nice butterflies, legovers, etc. He tried ducking and spinning clippers.

I… so I didn’t really mean to play at all. I had my bags with me and lavers on but I was wearing jeans. Anyway, I was warmed up doing toe stalls, legovers, mirages, strong clippers, strong atws, and strong butterflies. I can’t do flip at all because there’s no crank at all in that ankle and the support just wouldn’t be there. I did six ss butterflies in a row. I stopped kicking after that. I did not re-injure the bad ankle, and that’s all I’m saying about that.

Because many people have asked me how it’s doing: (thanks for the concern! :))

My ankle was big and swollen, now it’s the normal size. It got really bruised, and now the worst of the bruising is by my toes. The top of my foot is a very light shade of green, but other than that it’s not gross looking anymore. I wear an ace bandage when I’m out. What I’m doing now is actively stretching it. It’s better to the point where if I don’t stretch it now, it will heal too tightly and I won’t be able to have very much range of motion with my foot.

Today is the eighth day and it's looking great.

Ive had some bad, bruised swollen ankles but I've never seen anything like that before. Hopefully it just looked worse than they felt.

Moxie wrote: "do _____ faster," in most cases people mean sooner
I agree whole heartedly. It's great when the new kicker applies it right in front of you and you can immediatley see improvement. It's almost as much fun as hitting a new move yourself.

Moxie also wrote:It just took a little initiative
Again, if you ever come back and want to completely take over, you're more than welcome. I average about 10 calls every weekend just to figure out where and when we'll be kicking. Sometimes I think it's not even neccissary, and I do it out of some sick need to make things complicated. Anyways, take care of that ankle and get well soon.

Hey Bryan. Rest up that ankle for the big shred/filming weekend at the end of the month.

I played today without hurting myself. :) I hit ripwalk for the first time. :D Only like two or three times out of maybe thirty-five (sixty was too high of an estimate) tries, but two is better than "never.” Matt Kain is a good teacher. And the second time I hit it was: buttefly>ripwalk>toe>legover>drop. I tried my flip side some too, but that clipper's the bad one so it's not happening any time soon since I can't get a good set. I also tried stepping legover but couldn't get er done.

Oh, and I was so excited for Matt: He hit one osis >lap catch. He was falling over with the lap catch, but he caught it with his hand after that. You should have seen the face he made when he got that. Good job MK!

We’re going to play with Nate and A.J. if we can all find time to meet up sometime soon.

Matt and I played for about two hours again. It was beautiful outside and the sun was shining.

You know, 6 Same side Butterfly's is real good.

Ripwalk is EPIC. the most common 4 add move ever.

But you said you'd rest 3 weeks in your blog and you might want to go with your first instinct on that. Like you said, Stretching more now so your ankle doesn't heal to tightly later is very very important and stretching may be harder if you're shredding on it at all. It's not impossible to resist. Try. For your Ankles sake.

Visualize that other side ripwalk being even better than your good side.

A few days ago: I was playing hack with a guy at school when a guy in a wheel chair started playing with us. It was a little awkward at first to try to figure out what he was capable of since he had some mobility in his legs, but it was very very limited. And his communication skills were lacking, but it was fun once the three of us leaned what he could and couldn't do. We even got a real hack.

Today: the Santa Cruz freestylers had a session. Matt Kain was out of town for the day, but AJ came to kick, and later Nate. None of the hackers who had wanted to come showed up, which was not surprising, but still a little disappointing. I had a good warm up solo session at 4:30 of one and two adds for about an hour before AJ got there.

AJ used to freestyle more, so now he's in the process of remembering how to do what he used to do, and to relearn it with better form/style this time. He hit drifter a bunch of times for the first time in a long time - years, I think. He hadn't ever been able to spin, and he did a spinning toe stall today. He hadn't ever tried Bubba and he hit it, I think the first time he tried.

Nate was doing Illusions, so I asked him to do pdx. Illusion. He did. I suggested he hit Bubba. He did. Then later after he did some ripwalks, I asked him if he could do stepping ss Illusion. He did not hit it, but he had never tried to before and got very close.

By around 7:15 we started doing only consecutive kicks and then just hacking. This guy from the Caribbean by way of Texas saw us and started hacking like 20 feet away by himself, so I invited him to join us.

…anticlimactic ending. Oh well.

You're definitely doing awesome emily. Keep it up and you will very soon be at the top of your league (and so much easier for a girl, you should push the envelope ;-) )

Take it real light if you play until it feels real strong but do slowly work your angle into all the old positions...I've lost two main shredders to permascrewed ankles, it sad, and you can be really good, just gotta make sure this was just a setback and not a limitation.

May see you at the end of the month. Hope your completely better by then.

Peace,
Bum

There's a little footbag talked about in here somewhere

Post by Moxie »

Go to hell, you old softy. ;)

Friday:
A massive 13 Moon Tribe outdoor party. It was a 20 min drive on a dirt road (barely a road at some points) into a 400 acre property where the sound system was set up in a big field.
-I helped dig the hole for the port-o-potty to go over
-People set up tents to camp overnight
-People danced- crazy Santa Cruz people, plus hundreds and hundreds of people from LA, San Francisco and other places drove out and partied really hard
-It started raining and didn’t stop the whole night/next day
-I stayed warm by the bonfire but couldn’t dry off because I was still standing in the rain.
-My roommate spun, so did Lorin (such an awesome DJ) and many, many others.

Saturday:
Dat, his friend, and I went to a restaurant in San Francisco. The Stinking Rose is named that because it’s a restaurant based around Garlic. Everything on the menu has almost disgusting amounts of garlic in it… mmhhmm, so good. Then we went to see Bella Lea (the singer from Denali) and Velvet Teen at a show at The Bottom Of The Hill. Fun show.

Sunday:
:D Footbag :-D I called AJ, Nate, and Matt, and the only one who could kick was AJ. He’s very positive so very fun to kick with. He had a few really long strings of 2’s and 3’s. He did lots of paradox mirages, bunches of other stuff (sorry, bad memory ;)), worked on drifter, dlo, and dyno. He also did clipper>3 osi, which was the most he had ever done, and it looked natural and smooth. I just played. It was fun. That’s it, nothing noteworthy. :) I feel like physically I'm 99.95% recovered from my last ankle injury, but emotionally I'm not all the way okay with footbag yet and I think that's going to take a long time.

I ate a buffalo burger tonight, I think it was the first time I’ve eaten buffalo. No, I ate fresh buffalo jerky on my way to California from Illinois and it was so good. I ate way too many banana chips this weekend.

Tomorrow's Monday. Wednesday I'm going out in the evening, and Thursday Lon gets here and we leave for LA. So I have two days to pack and do school work. Oh man. It's going to be so fun!
