Footbag.Org/Forum RSSyndication !!

I'm STOKED. We have RSS feeds 8)

http://www.footbag.org/forum/rss.php most recent posts

http://www.footbag.org/forum/rss.php?t=NNN most recent posts from topic NNN

http://www.footbag.org/forum/rss.php?f=MMM most recent posts from forum MMM

HUGE thanks to Steve for the drop in on the scriptolla :)

A larger implentation of these feeds is coming - to what degree it will be integrated into the forums is a matter to be decided yet, but this is the preliminary announcement that our forums are finally trackable!!

If you're not on the "News Feed" or "Blog" bandwagon yet, this might help a little bit:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_aggregator

Basically, if you get an aggregator (even just using the LiveBookmarks feature in Firefox) you don't have to actually visit the forum to keep up with all the new posts. You just view the bookmark "folder" (if using firefox) and it lists all the latest posts made - if a headline/subject interests you, click it and you're taken to that forum post to reply or read more.

There are also lots of free, feature rich applications that notify you of new headlines using cool methods (stock ticker style anyone? not me, but ...) and help you manage and track and add new feeds as you find them on the web pages that offer them.

Syndication simply RULES if you're trying to track multiple news sources and discussions. Viewing 20 web sites and trying to read more than one article is cumbersome at best. Keeping up with 40 "feeds" takes 1/4 the time - just because of how it is delivered.

Anyhow, this wasn't supposed to be a lesson :) If you know about this stuff already, you're stoked too!! If you don't, take a few minutes to read some more about it - you might be surprised that such a simple sounding concept changes the way you use the intarweb 8)

I love RSS/XML. I use feedreader to keep on top of my shit, and it's great. getting stuff changed around modified is not easy though.

I keep waiting for somebody to make a Image emoticon. how fly would that be? (hey mods - it's 16x16, you know you want it as an emoticon!!!)

Yea this forum is rather lame, as far as what could be done with it.
Some additions are so easy to impliment but add character to a message board.

Maybe we should just make modified.ca dissapear and everyone will be forced to discuss their sport at footbag.org. It's what's best.

We could bring alot of character to that message board:D

403 Forbidden <URL:http://www.footbag.org/forum/rss.php>

Does .org do some sort of User-Agent checking ? I tried to get the XML into a perlscript and it gave that message.

Strangely if I telnet into port 80 and start talking to the machine it will give it up with a simple GET http://www.footbag.org/forum/rss.php
command.

I know I SHOULD use an rss feed reader, but I was just playing around with the feeds and noticed this behavior.

I don't have unlimited access to make things happen. Jer is absent and I have tried everywhichway I know how to contact him. At this point I am merely waiting to hear back from Tom Mosher who says his friend lives with Jer. Beyond that I am stuck.

This is sweet. Although it makes me less likely to respond to a post if i have to switch programs to do it. i'm still glad I can just scroll through every new modified post along with the rest of my feeds. very cool.

edit: i'm editing this post from inside my RSS reader, so scratch that! if anybody wants a good one, I'm using Feedreader 2.7. It's free and (I think) open source.

you know what? I actually deleted this feed from my reader yesterday. I was getting up to 100 msgs a day, and they were occasionally coming in in the wrong order, and without context. I actually found it more confusing than useful.

I guess I"m gonna stick with "posts since your last visit".
