Movie reviews/comments
I thought there should be a general topic about movies we see - so we can all watch the good films and avoid the bad ones.... When you see a new movie - make a quick post about it - doesn't need to be a big essay - just some comments to recommend it or avoid it etc.
Be Cool.
Hmm. Well I really didn't want to see this - Grudge 2 (japanese horror movie) was playing for one night at an arty cinema and I really really wanted to see that - however Dylan Fry and a friend of mine wouldn't compromise so I saw Be Cool instead of going to Grudge by myself. (even though Be Cool is on for a few weeks)
Anyway I went into the film not being stoked at all - so I think that might have effected my judgement of things.
Basically I thought this movie was horrible, the acting sucks, the movie was only funny in one seen (the rocks "monologue") and the plot really didn't interest me at all. I came very close to walking out actually - I'd rate this as one of the worst movies I've seen and is a great demonstration of why I watch as few hollywood movies as I can.

Kung Fu Hustle
Martial arts comedy
Fun movie to watch. Good story and acting, great action, cool sets and cinematography. Most characters are unlike anything I've seen in most kung fu movies. I saw this in the theaters while in the Phillipines and I damn near laughed the whole time through. Although I'm not sure if I saw the uncut version or not. I've seen 2 DVD versions on ebay, one is the uncut movie but I've only ever seen it for region 3 (asia) and a region free dvd which I'm assuming has been edited to some degree.
One of the few complaints was that some of the computer special effects were'nt up to the rest of the movies standards. They were bad enough that you noticed them but not bad enough that it killed the movie for me. Generally though they were well done but not over done.[/b]

Saddest moive in history. My friends and I rented it last night and at the end almost everybody was crying. Expect for me and a couple other people. It takes alot to make me cry.
Overall a good plot and it's pretty funny.

As for a movie I saw recently, I saw the Weather Underground and thought it was fascinating. Even more interesting was that I watched it with my mom who was around that sort of thing during her college years (though to a much lesser extent). If someone has seen this more recently than me, feel free to pipe in. The movie isn't fresh enough in my memory for me to review it very extensively.

Plot summary: Elvis and JFK (neither died apparantly) are living together in a nursing home when a soul sucking mummy starts to kill the other patients. (do I need say more)
Pros: Incredibly funny, Elvis was acted very well I though, not many people know about this movie so you can act hella snobish after seeing it, it has some sweet lines
Cons: Low budget movie but I like that I guess it could be a con for some, and some might say it was "stupid" but I don't think so
Total: Great movie I would deffenatly see it if I were you.

I think La Resistance is named after the French Resistance movement to the nazis in world war 2 - who were also called La Resistance and were an inspiration to many left wing resistance groups including "La Barbudos" - from the cuban revolution - hence the Che Guevara image for the club - certainly the resistance group in south park is based on that - I really like the south park movie too - although even more than that I like the way so many american's like it - since it seems to compare the US government to Nazi's -Asmus wrote: Bonus Info:
I think the footbag club name La Resistancé comes from the movie..

watched the first superman movie for the first time. There are TONS of sexual inuendo *sp* in that movie. it's hilarious. Superman makes the world go back in time by flying sooo fast around the world that the rotation of the earth changed and thus saves lois lane's life. The movie was pretty good up until that point. that was just completely random and pointless.

The Brain That Wouldn't Die
(old cult horror flick)
I am so obsessed with corny old horror movies and this was the perfect definition of what constitutes a movie of this type. A surgeon experimenting with prosthetic limbs and tissues is in a car accident with his girlfriend/fiancee and he manages to salvage her head, which he hooks up to a constant flow of serum that keeps her head alive. In the mean time he goes to various strip joints looking for a body to fit to the head of his wife, eventually finding an appropriate model. There is also apparently a grotesque creature locked in the doctor's laboratory closet whom the body-less wife manages to form a strange connection with.
The plot was preposterous, the writing was extremely predictable, the acting was dreadful, the small amount of gore (one dismembered arm, some flesh torn from a neck) looked like ketchup, and overall the movie was just boring as hell. That was the main problem with this movie...even if you love movies of this type, it was far too boring to be very enjoyable, as boring, insipid, predictable dialogue filled the first 90% of the movie.
Of course the main reason movies of this type are entertaining is in the severity of the depressingly pathetic attempts at horror, usually on a small budget. Finding as many discrepencies and illogical moments provide a small amount of entertainment and thats why this movie is worth watching at all. The best example of this is the title itself...in the opening credits (and on the DVD) the movie is titled: "The Brain That Wouldn't Die," however, in the closing credits, it is entitled "The Head That Wouldn't Die." However, once the original amusement of this has passed, only one who enjoys this type of movie would find any worth in it's contents. I don't recommend watching it twice....
EDIT-my bad, did i go on too long??

man, you should all definitely see Bubba Hotep. It's a Bruce Campbell movie (evil dead, army of darkness etc) and it's SOOO good. I didn't even know it was Bruce Campbell during it. I mean, i knew it was him in my head, but watching the movie, it was totally an old, cancer ridden elvis. Also, JFK is black, which cracks me up.
As for other movies i've seen lately, the Incredibles is the best cartoon of 2004 - you should definitely rent it. It's well written, well animated and full of good action as well as being a heartwarming/family movie at the same time. well worth it.
Also, if you're into Werner Hertzog (who directed Aguirra the wrath of god and Fitzcaraldo among others, and was in Gummo and some others) you should watch "the incident at lock-ness" very VERY funny.
I don't know if anybody else is into Danish films (Dogma 95, Lars von Trier style stuff) but "The Five Obstructions" with Trier and Jorgen Leth isn't bad.
That reminds me, try and find Lars Von Trier's "The Kingdom" - remade recently by stephen king I think, but the danish original is so fucking creepy and awesome. It's like "ER on Acid" (acording to the box...).

Oh so Sout Park got it from there.. And Montreal got it from there to..Jeremy wrote:I think La Resistance is named after the French Resistance movement to the nazis in world war 2 - who were also called La Resistance and were an inspiration to many left wing resistance groups including "La Barbudos" - from the cuban revolution - hence the Che Guevara image for the club - certainly the resistance group in south park is based on that - I really like the south park movie too - although even more than that I like the way so many american's like it - since it seems to compare the US government to Nazi's -Asmus wrote: Bonus Info:

Yeah, The Incredible is a damn good flick. 3000 Miles to Graceland
I love this movie. The begining and end of this movie are classic! Best action scenes in movie history. If you haven't seen it you need to as soon a possible. Go Wombats!!! You'll get it when you see the movie.

oh man. HELL YES! for me...i honestly could be in ANY state of mind and still not be able to control my laughing while watching that movie. of course everyone knows, but its a very gory comedy, and at some points, the only comedy is the gore, so if you are into stuff like that...i HIGHLY recommend this movie.rory wrote:shawn of the dead is by far the funniest movie i have ever seen, u have to be in the right state of mind to see it

Sin City
I've never seen the "graphic novel" (comic book) before, but just from watching the movie, I know I would've loved it. It's kinda dark, but it's still cool. The movie was just like I assume the comic book is. It's like they just took the frames from the comic and filled in the spots that needed to move. Really cheesy at parts, but I bet the comic is the same. All the cheesy parts make you laugh at how cheesy they are. The funniest part is when this dude gets shot through the stomach with an arrow by the prostetute (sp?) ninja. She only makes stuff hurt if she wants to (guess she didn't want it to hurt) and she nails him in the stomach from behind and all he says is "hey" in a suprised voice. Me and my girl laughed about that all day.
The end of Napolean Dynamite
I wish I would've been there when they started it. I didn't understand alot but it didn't seem like I had to. Pedro's the shit. I'm gonna watch the rest as soon as I can.
Volcano High
Eeeehhh, it kept me entertained. I can't say it's the worst movie I've ever seen, it wasn't too bad. But it wasn't good either. Little Jon is not a good voice actor. He ruined the movie for me. Not just him, but he's the most memorable of the bad.
