Knees

Post by BalinorNZ »

Lately I have been playing alot more (1-3 hours a day average) and I am getting really sore knee joints.

They hurt when I bend them to sit down etc and get stiff after ive been playing hard and stop for a while.

I'm a little worried that im damaging my knees, ive been doing mainly osis and stepping sets and DLO/drifter alot lately, and ive been doing alot of illusions (pdx/bubba/blizzard/fairy illusion/spinning pdx illusion).

Anyone have any light to shread.. i mean shead on my situation?

Cycle riding! This is greate thing for knees! Especially when you have some SPD pedals.

Generally you have to strenghten your leg muscles...

Knees

Post by ShredOnLawn »

I hurt my right knee doing PS Whirl

When you wake up in the morning do a knee warm up.
Standing comfortably, put your hands on your knees and do small cirlces with your knees. About 10 small circles each direction and then about 10 large circles each direction letting your heels lift off the ground a little bit. Your knees and ankles may pop a little. This will help your knees joint oil get moving.

Supplements
MSM
Glucosamine/Chondroitin
Gelatin

Stretches
Quad
Hamstring
Calf
Al three before sleep.

Since your knees aren't hurt yet I'd recommend taking Emergiin"C" packets in your water during your shred sessions. There are different flavors and kinds with glucosmine/chondroitin and kinds for sports and kinds with msm etc....
These helped me amazingly.
Also, If you take caffience before working out you start to burn fat ten minutes sooner.

These are some good advices from Lon! I never thought about some of them.

Lon can you describe what are this 'Emergiin"C" packets'? Because I've never seen something like this in Poland and I would like to search for something like this...
And by "caffience", you meant these Emergiin "C" packets with coffeine?

They're in most supermarkets that I've been to in the USA. I don't know if you can find them at some other site for less money, but I have a friend who's in a different country who has ordered through Vita Springs before. You just have to e-mail them with the address and product and they'll e-mail you back telling you the cost. There are different flavors at the bottom of the page. I like the Orange flavor, but I don't see it there.

ive had bad knees for years now, due to fracturing them and improper care. I really want to stress the knee circles that lon already mentioned. it's a great exercise and really helps to loosen up your knees and helps to increase fluid circulation. another good thing to do befor and after your sessions is give you knees a good massage. work around the tops, bottoms and sides of your knee cap, but not directly on it. this will also help with blood flow to the area.

CAFFEINE will make your body start to burn fat after only 10 minutes of excercise! Usually your body won't start burning fat until 20 minutes into a workout.
Each packet of Emergen "C" costs about 40 cents.
You can buy a whole box of 36 packets for 10-20 dollars depending on if you want regular or the kinds with Glucosamine ($18) or MSM($20).

I just got up and did those knee circles everyone's talking about.

Lon's not lyin' about Glocosamine, MSM, and Chondroitin either. The stuff really works. I was introduced to it by a few of my mentors (Carol W. and Dennis Jones) about seven years ago, but only started really taking them in the last couple of years. It takes about a month or so to really build up in your system, but when it starts working, you'll know (my knees and ankles stopped popping). Especially if you have been freestyling for a while, or are getting into really gnarly/high impact combos or moves (fury set, ps moves) the stuff will help cut down on injuries. It loosens your joints up as well, so it does not feel so grinding to do certain moves. If you already have a cartilage injury, it can also speed along the recovery. I am somewhat of a high impact player, and can honestly say I would probably not be freestyling right now (or at least not as well) without it.

I tried longboarding flipside today, and realized how much stronger my right knee is than my left. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that i used to do a ton of longboarding, only one side. I really felt all of the muscles in the knee working to keep myself balanced while riding. After riding my knee felt really nice and loose. I'm gonna train a ton of flipside lonboarding, and see if it gets rid of my knee pain. An interesting note, footbag is the only thing that hurts my knee :x

Warm up with many osis or low impact moves until you break a sweat.

Play on softer surfaces.

Play in Warmer weather.

Strech before you play.

You know, I remember that I once read a great tip from the internet. In the 70s some guys started to kick a bean bag or something to strengthen their knees.
It has worked for me this far.

My knee joints are usually always sore after playing. Last night I went for consecutive toe stalls after a session with lots of 4's and 5's where i could no longer feel my legs and my knees KILLED! after consecutive toe stalls my knees felt great and it actually felt like I was a new man.

Thanks to Lon and inspired by Red's success, I too have purchased a bottle of MSM and Glucosamine & Chondriotin supplements for my knees. On top of that, last week I started (regularly) taking Calcium & Magnesium and Vitmain C supplements as well.

I've been taking 3 of each a day but now am considering increasing it to 4 of each, making it 16 tablets a day.

What's your reasoning behind playing on concrete? That's horrendous on the shins :/

I've never had problems on concrete, even as a long distance runner I could run on pavement and not have problems. Concrete also has a very sharp response time that makes it easier on my body because I don't have to push and compress carpet+padding after every single step. It's a combination of less effort and better rhythm that makes concrete easier for me to play on.
