How do you support footbag??

i was at a national judo tournament, and i did a quick demo in front of some of the members of the US Olympic Comittee, and they liked it. i was only hitting single dexs and some doubles back then too. im sure if they saw how the sport is now, they'd be really impressed.

Uve from Estonia, Europe, reporting in. What I have done (I WILL brag:p):
Pushed the scene in Estonia, a.k.a
- held two national champs
- held a 6-week footbag tour in Estonia for Snickers (similar to Creative Athletics format)
- held three 3-day footbag camps
- webmastering http://www.footbag.ee (look back in the beginning of February

)
- public performances, demos at TV shows, youth centers, concerts, etc
- created the Snickers Footbag Team, which is basically Estonia's national team, getting sponsored with money to buy equipment, travel, and promote the scene in Estonia
Internationally
- donated bags, (cash,) time, etc
- about to join IFPA in the nearer days

- participated Euro's twice (+ other tournies)
- encouraged some ppl to start a footbag club in Portugal, which will HOPEFULLY last, + once gave quite a bit of advice to Baz Roberts of UK over MSN, which HOPEFULLY encouraged him to stick to the game...is that so, Baz?;)

As to what we should do to make footbag more recognized, I have given quite a lot of thought to that lately. And probably come up w/ nothing that has not been thouight of yet. Support IFPA & footbag.org (i.e. join IFPA, submit materials, esp vids to f.org) for starters. But actually it comes down to having more players. Hell yeah we should continue doing all 'em demos. And I think trying to include one's friends and close ones helps a lot too - in that way you can create a strong team of people to achieve footbag related goals (if they take fire, of course), coz you know the ppl and their abilities well. Rob Riefer said that after 20 years of promoting the bag mostly his old friends are the ones who still carry around a bag in their backbag... for some reason, I think we should be aware of this fact while thinking how to promote the bag.

If we were having a live discussion we could definitely come up w/ loads of cool ideas

This is a question that has long (heh, I've only been playing for a year) plagued my mind but in my time I feel that I have done a lot.

1.) Taken the Las Vegas Zombies Footbag Club (Mike Tabers Club for you OOPS people posting) from a three person club capable of a few two adders to a club with 22 members, 4 of which can do guiltless runs.

2.) Go to every Outdoor concert in Vegas throughout the year, play in all of the little crappy circles, impress, then pass out club business cards of the club and words of encouragement.

3.) Quoting zerbe "-Said, "Hackey Sack is a name brand and Footbag is a sport" about a million times"

4.) Go to every comp that I am able to in order to better myself and to get good enough to do street performances and catch new members like flys with honey.

5.) Take off my pants (with footbag shorts underneathe of course) and shred hard ever day in school right where everyone can see in order to let people see it exists and find new members.

6.) Teach anyone of any level any specific trick they want to learn that I can do in order to better them and in turn the sport.

7.) Tell everyone I know that footbag is what I do and explain it to them, and hand out bags to the kids I know, further spreading the word.

8.) Read everything on the internet and become Doctor Footbag who knows all about the sport and can explain any concept for anyone on the street or give them C.D.s with a video collection that might rival Piltz's.

9.) Leave an weird signature on the bottom of my posts as well as posting information about the club everywhere I can to encourage people to come help me grow footbag in my own town and make lasting friendships with the footbag community. (I got a buddy of yours named Aaron down here for the weekend Matt thats gonna come shred it up with us.

Now, I thought that Steve Goldberg was handling stuff with the olympics, or at least thats what I tell people, but you guys can put off a hell of a presentation and have a world renouned name to back it so maybe you guys should take it into your own hands, because its still not recognized as a sport to the olympic commitee while stuff like tug o war still is.

I've said enough.

I'll add my 2 cents here. You can easily contribute to footbag (more what I mean is to the advancement of footbag) without doing something as grand as organizing a tournament or doing an organized demonstration. Something quite simple to do is to just be a decent human being when playing out in public. If people come up to you and ask questions, be courteous and answer everything to the best of your ability. Direct those people to footbag.org. Just try and show them how supportive and generally pleasant footbaggers are. Footbaggers are some of the nicest people around, so make sure they leave with a good impression. If you are being obnoxious and cussing up a storm then this leaves a poor impression not only on yourself but footbag overall. Having supportive people is what really got me into disc golf. Anytime I was out playing there was always someone willing to answer my questions. That was really encouraging and led to my disc golf addiction. The same can be done for footbag.

What I've done for footbag!

1. Introduced freestyle to my school, made some profit selling footbags to everybody.

2. Competed in a national tournement.

3. Organised a state tournement.

4. Played in public places all the time.

5. Made the paper today (a big photo with a nice story, it took up more room them Maurice Gibb, which says more about the paper than anything else).

Oh and I did a 90 second rountine (to the captian planet theme) at a school arts talent night (300 people+, and I had one days notice.)

I think the best thing for promoting the sport is just getting out there and letting people see it. Maybe encouraging cirlce kickers to take the next step is important as well.

Obviously making a profit myself isn't supporting footbag, but exposing my school to real footbags and getting them involved is isn't it? i just added that bit cause I was rapt with making moeny out of it.

I think you may have confused me with the other Matt Baker from Australia. You are right distributing footbags does promote the sport. But jacking up the price on the price on footbags is in your own interest. If you sold them at the cost you got them at I would consider that more in support of footbag.

oh man, you blow, I had 8 people last year that wanted a club, but we could never get a teacher to sponsor it and be there during practice, what kid of teacher do you have thats nice enough to do that, or do you not need one?

-hes talking about a college club, not high school.
-you dont need a professor to sponsor, just some money, $20 for the year maybe, and a few members.
-here at UCSB, the uniiversity even gives club free access to restricted places on campus to put on events each quarter.

I do need a faculty adviser to have a club. He's a phsyics professor who actually plays net. I sent him an email about class and he noticed my email address had flying clipper in it and asked me about it. Pretty cool guy. He used to sew footbags and hold tournaments when he was going to school.
