Holy fuck, thirty blog pages.

I just had one of thebest footbag sessions of my life.
Here are all the things I hit for my first time today:

- weaving osis
- stepping ss rev whirl
- ss symp toe whirl
- spinning paradox illusion
- spinning osis bsos
- spinning osis>ripwalk
- flying legover
- pixie flying legover
- atomic flying legover (did I invent this?, if I did I am calling it eggplanet since it's a flying eggplant)
- witchdoctor
- pixie ss drifter
- pixie ss torque

And as you should assume by now, everything was both sides.

I was gonna type alot but my fingers are cold and tired.

I know what will suffice, Yay footbag! :D

The coordinator lady at the YMCA sent me this:

Tom,

What I require is background to the sport of footbag, and outline of what the program would look like ideally, number of participants, ages, equipment required, length of session, frequency of the program, etc. As well as safety considerations, why the program would be a success, other examples of areas where similar programs have been met with success, and so on.

Unfortunately it is too late to add this program to our spring offering, but we do have some openings for day-time drop-in programming during the summer months.

Anja Cahill
Director, Health, Fitness & Recreation Programs
Kingston Family YMCA

To which I just replied: (at length)

Hello Anja,

I did my best to address the questions you had, I appologize if this came out rather lengthy.

The Sport of Footbag:

Footbag is a sport that is played worldwide and enjoyed by people from a plethora of backgrounds. The act of kicking objects around was never really invented, but the current forms that footbag take today were pioneered in the early 80’s by a few extremely influential individuals. Today there are several forms that the sport can take.

You are probably familiar with the brand name Hacky Sack, most people are aware of the activity of kicking a ‘hacky sack’ around in a circle with friends. Nearly every kid knows about hacky sack and most have even tried it to some degree, however nearly all of them are unaware that what they know as ‘hacky sack’ is really just a subset of the sport of footbag and that it extends far beyond simple circle kicking.

There are two very different popular forms of the sport of footbag. Footbag Freestyle and Footbag Net.

Freestyle is the form of footbag that is currently enjoying a rapid growth. As opposed to just kicking the bag around each player takes a turn with the bag and executes a string of tricks linked together via catching the bag with your feet (‘delaying’ the bag) and circling the bag in a myriad of ways. You will be amazed what can be done! There are several ways in which freestylers compete at tournaments, there are routines that are performed much like a figure skating routine with attention paid to choreography and presentation, there are also competitions to see who can hit the most impressive trick or combo of 3 tricks. It’s all very exciting to watch and participate in!

The very important thing about freestyle footbag is that you are completely free to make up your own style. There are 1000’s of tricks that can be performed that range in complexity and difficulty covering the whole spectrum. With so many tricks available everyone is boundless in choosing the tricks they wish to hit and as a result every player has a completely unique style that is entirely their own. Falling in line with the idea of it being a very free and open sport there is no pressure to compete and the atmosphere at events is not that of a battle or rivalry, more of comradery and appreciation of time spent with new and old friends playing the sport we all love.

Footbag Net is played much like volleyball but played on a court that has the same dimensions as a badminton net, along with the same net height. It is generally played on grass and players compete in 1-on-1 and 2–on-2 categories at tournaments. Over time footbag net and freestyle have been growing apart and few players play seriously at both forms simultaneously. I do not have an extensive background in net, but this summer my club will be getting out in the sun and giving it more of a try. The few times I have played have been quite exciting!

Equipment:
There is no current official shoe for either forms of footbag. There are several very popular shoe choices, though nearly every freestyle player worldwide plays in the Adidas Rod Laver classic tennis shoe for it’s excellent surfaces.

Freestyle
- freestyle bags come in MANY forms, every size and weight and number of panels and fill choice and stitching technique has been tried. The current most popular bags are hand made 32 panel bags that look much like small soccer balls. They are all made by stitchers around the world who are also often players. I myself am a bag stitcher and I use it as a source of income should I ever need it. Freestyle bags are generally rather small and heavy but very soft and plush. A hand stitched 32 panel footbag is a true masterpiece!

Net
– a badminton net is used, though not required.
– Net is played with bags that are packed full to keep them uniformly round

Ideal Program:
The number of participants could vary greatly without losing any of it’s merit. One of the beauties of footbag is that it is enjoyable in any sized group, even alone!
I am a very active player and I could picture anywhere from 1-3 or 4 regular scheduled weekly meeting times being entirely feasible. No one would/should be required to show up for any meetings, I would like it to be entirely voluntary, you can’t force someone to love something, right?

I truly believe that a footbag program could blossom if properly fostered and led. I have experience with teaching many players, I am the founder of Kingston’s only footbag club! I have watched my own club grow from where it started with just me and a lot of enthusiasm to today where it is a fully established club with dedicated players and even more enthusiasm!

There are several reasons why the people that choose to stick with footbag enjoy it so much. It is absolutely addicting since you receive such obvious tangible feedback and progression when you invest time practicing. The simple foundation tricks can be quickly grasped and players enjoy an exponential progress rate as the foundation concepts are combined to create more complex tricks. There are so many new tricks to learn that exist at every possible level of difficulty that a player is constantly rewarded with the feeling and knowledge of their progression by the direct feedback of hitting new tricks or playing with more confidence.

There is no upper limit to what can be done with footbag, new tricks are being hit and concepts pioneered daily, in fact I invented a new trick two days ago!

Safety:
Footbag is a high energy sport that is quite physically demanding. The act of drilling and playing has the secondary effect of being an incredible cardiovascular workout that strengthens the entire body. You make use of your legs obviously, but the upper body also plays a very large role in balance and movement around the bag.
There are not many injuries that are directly related to footbag playing. I have suffered several twisted ankles from tangling my feet. Some players suffer from shin splints from the repeated stomping that can occur, though pains are more related to poor form and inadequate footwear.
In sessions I would stress the importance of proper stretching and the related benefits.

An example of a successful program exists in Edmonton Alberta, a pair of footbag players run a program at local YMCA. They were my inspiration for contacting you, their program is running well with a group of enthusiastic kids that regularly come out for sessions.

I would run my sessions in a very open fashion. My current club meetings normally last 2-3 hours and consist of a mix of playing solo for practice and playing in groups of various sizes together. I do my best to apply my experience to answering the questions that arise, I love seeing a person get overwhelmed with excitement at hitting something for their first time! That feeling is so easily achievable that it’s quite addictable!

I have no requirements regarding age, it has been shown that players of all ages can take to footbag whole heartedly.

Here is a brief background of my experience with footbag:
- I have been actively playing footbag for almost 2 years now
- I am a very active member in the worldwide footbag community
- I organized and held a tournament in Toronto in February
- I am the founder and organizer of the Kingston footbag club
- I am very passionate about footbag and all it’s various aspects

I am a 22 year old student at Queen’s University and I am currently nearing the end of my Mechanical Engineering program.

I am extremely motivated and I hope to apply my engineering degree towards a very unique opportunity that I have. I hope to get a junior engineer job at a large shoe company with the intent of eventually creating the ideal footbag shoe that the world craves. It is a long term dream but I would love to see it brought to fruition.

I hope I haven’t gone overboard with my description, I have a lot to say when it comes to footbag.

I am eager to work out something that can work, I am sure lots of people would be interested in the club, everyone knows about hacky sack, they just need to have their eyes opened to the unbelievable possibilities available to them.

Here is a link to a video I edited that is of my friend Derrick Ogden and I playing some footbag to give you a better feel of what it is like:

http://www.footbag.org/media/344/KFM%20 ... 202005.wmv

I would be willing to come and talk about this in person and show you more if you are interested.

Thank you for your time!

People laugh and make comments when I ride around on Hotdog.
I love people.

Sometimes I feel like a caricature of myself. Like all the things that happen around me are all way larger than life and beyond belief. I think I am too dramatic sometimes.

Oh well, I am happy, that's what counts.

PS I play footbag sometimes. (that was for the people that say I don't talk about footbag enough in my blog)

I went to Ottawa for 420, the fun was almost rained out but we made the best of the sitch and went to this great underground spot right in the middle of town.

As it turned out, the rest of the 420 party people had the same idea and it soon turned into a huge fun party. There were hundreds of us in this underground area and by the peak of the partying (around 4:20 PM or so :P ) there were a handful of hackysack circles, people jamming on guitars and drums and singing and Ryan Seath and I were these mega freak hacky sacker dudes.

Ryan was throwing down big time! We filmed a bunch so now I can finally make a good video of Ryan. He was hitting sweet unique shuffle runs with lots of creativity and string length. I always like visiting Ryan, he has progressed SO MUCH at footbag, its phenomenal.

I will make a movie out of the Ryan footage, it will be clear what the 420 event was like in the background, it was really interesting.

Ryan had 100 brand new Mr. Sandbags at his house! It was fun fondling them. I noticed something strange however, instead of gluing them shut, a percentage of them were hand stitched closed! How strange.

Along with his bags he also had a stack of those Freedom Footbags fliers. Some dudes read the flier and then asked if Ryan could hit Mullet (the hardest trick on the sheet) and Ryan said no but that I probably could. I was fully dressed and Ive never hit mullet but i gave in a try for them, I set, ducked, symp paradox whirled to a nice clean drop. They weren't very impressed by that, or by the paradox whirl i hit as a consolation for them. Ungrateful bastards.

Yesterday I opened my door to leave my room and there was this sketchy looking lady standing there about to knock! I startled her good!
She asked if this was the 'hack sack house' because she had seen the KFM sign up in our window. She said her and her daughter had seen us playing around and her daughter really wanted to get into footbag. Woo! new kingston player! She said that I will have to protect her 14 year old daughter from Derrick. She thinks that 14 is too young to start dating, when is old enough exactly?

I made a bag for Nate Pipenburg, it's real nice.

Vida's lavers STILL havn't come yet. I won them off ebay like.. forever ago! mid-march, and the still are not here yet.

On the topic of Vida..... I can't believe how fucking lucky I am!!!! I am constantly in disbelief that I found Vida and that she is real. We get along in so many magical ways and she is always making me laugh and smile and be surprised by her. She stitches footbags now!!!! Can you believe that??? how fucking cool!!! okay, not to look too too far into the future or anything, but lets think of some famous footbag couples. Peter Irish&Lonn Irish, Eric Wulff&Carol Wedemeyer. both are comprised of a legendary footbag player and a world class stitcher. Clearly Vida and I don't fit those roles yet, but in time!

Vida is really eager to learn how to make 32's. I can't wait to show her. Her 4-panels are coming out really sweet so far, I was playing with one yesterday! I was doing a string with the bag she made and then I paused to reflect on how amazing that was, I was playing footbag with a footbag made by the girl I am mental about. Not only has she shown an interest in footbag, she fucking loves it! and she's gone beyond just loving footbag to wanting to make them and create and be creative and be every thing Ive ever looked for or hoped for or wanted.

I'm so in love. :D

I havn't been posting much in my blog lately because I have been too busy living.

Here is a video I made last night:

http://www.footbag.org/media/344/tom%20battlebig.mov

I made it for the battle with HooD but I totally got out edited.

I tried to let the natural character of the material in the shots create the magic themselves without forcing it out with excessive editing.
Though, I wish I could have done more of the fancy editing things I wanted to do. Rather, I wish I could have done ANY of them.

Sigh.. I'll get em next time.

The stupid battle reminded me why I hate competitions and battles and shit.

It forces the situation of there being a winner and a loser by default.

I especially hate forcing that situation upon something like footbag which isnt inherently competitive.

I spose this sounds strange coming from the organizer dude of the online competions. But fuck me.

Oh yeah, and send in your sick3's really soon please.

So far no one has sent in any for this month and the competition will be rather narrow.

You will be forced to pick between me and nothing else, maybe this is my one chance at winning!

I am going to go haggle people to send me sick3's. I will be grateful to anyone that submits a video and makes this months comp sweet.

Just a bit ! It is competitive in nature, but it is very light on that side with these battles. I understand where you're coming from, from the just shed without placing yourself against others for competition. I myself never compete, just shred. These battles will get some good videos out that normally wouldn't have been made. People will critique themselves more about editing, to make better videos. I mean, yes there is a poll, and I guess that would be the main part of the 'competition', but then again, we can always have another with just comments. In short, go pirate a video editing program, and make more videos :)

Edit:: By the way you've been postin about the battle, you may not have fully noticed that I think your shred is fucking awesome. Keep it up man, you're full of potential.

Thanks HooD, that means alot.

I need to start drilling more.
The past few weeks I have been swamped with studying for exams. It totally dominates your life!

I hate the whole exam process. I am superduper ADD so it's hard for me to make my head stick to learning one boring topic for a long time. So I take study drugs. I used to take Ritalin all day every day back in highschool and it made me into such a zombie. I had zero friends because it made me completely socially retarded and all I would do was study hard-effing-core all day in the library. I got so obsessed with learning.

It kinda sucked at the time but I made it to University and that's really what mattered. I had no idea at the time how fucking sweet life would turn out to be.

There are a number of things I am really impressed by right now. Impressed in the sense that they are leaving an impression.
- footbag.. as in.. the whole experience. It is really overwhelming and unbelievable the change you experience as you learn to do all these crazy things. The coolest people I have met over the last many months have all been footbag players.
- Vida.. I can't believe I finally met a good girl, a funny and gorgeous girl.. a keeper! (hehe, a footbag player to boot!)
- Stitching.. it makes me feel like I have superpowers, I love making these baby soccer balls! :P
- Opportunities.. I really see an exciting potential future in making footbag shoes, I can't wait to see how all this develops. I have to pass some classes before that can happen however. Also, footbag itself is such a huge opportunity. You are totally free to learn whatever you choose and develop as you please and make up silly tricks and just have fun with it. Footbag has opened so many doors for me!

Gosh darnit, I like livin'.

mother fuck I hate footbag right now!!!

I just tried to have a solo session and NOTHING is working.

A minute ago my legs got tangled on a spinning pdx whirl and I tumbled to the ground and smashed into a pile of boxes and a fridge.

The only highlight was hitting janiwalker first try today.

bleh, who needs janiwalker when I can't even hit a string to put it in.

I am going to go try something hard over and over until I hit it so I can feel rewarded.

Either that or I am going to go try something hard over and over until I give up and cry.

I'll report back.

I am scared of my powers sometimes.

It has happened several times now where a song is playing and I look at the playlist and desire for some reason some other song to come on and then it turns out to be the next song in the shuffle.

Ive got the coolest damn name ever, sometimes I think it's fake. I sure hope people still mosh when I have kids so that they can reap the benefits.

Here are some cool names Ive thought of for my kids:
- Nora Mosher
- Mercedes Mosher
- something Danger Mosher
- uhh..

okay, I am not feeling very name-inspired right now. But dammit my kids are going to be cool.

I have to admit something - my whole life I pronounced my last name Moe-sher, not maw-sher. It's how it is traditionally pronounced technically. But then people started calling me maw-sher a few years ago and it's kinda stuck. I like it better this way anyways.

I really want some hardcore metal head dude to be all 'what a loser, calling himself mosher blah blah' and then I'd get to be all 'its my name dickhead.' and shut him up good.

Sadly this hasn't ever happened. It's happened lots of times in my head however.
