First Hand Made bag

Hi everyone,

After recently Finding a Mr. SandBag template, I made my own. The process took me a little over an hour. I don't plan on using this bag, I was just seeing how well I can make a bag. I couldn't close up the one side of the bag, and was wondering how I could do so. (Maybe an explanation please?) The bag is filled with rice and is modeled after a Mr.SandBag. [Note: sorry about image quality, this camera isn't too great :/]

The bag looks great for a first attempt.

The way you close the bag is by stitching the last little bit using a technique called blind stitching. I have trouble describing it well with just words..

Maybe I should make a little blind stitch tutorial.

Basically you have to get the needle to follow the path it normally would have if you were stitching it from the inside.. but you have to do so from the outside.

It's kinda tricky.

The basic blind stich looks something like this,

That bag looks great. With that fabric, I found it worked really well to hand stitch both directions through the same holes, and the don't gather the seems. It's a cheap "machine sewed by hand" technique that removes the need to have gathers.

I can't picture how that describes a blind stitch.

Wow! Thanks fir the feedback guys! I'll look around and see if I can find some tutorials on blind stitching. I don't think I'll do too bad after learning to blind stitch, as I've taken two sewing courses not too long ago.

It's almost exactly what the stich looks like, I can't help you see it if you don't know what it looks like. basically its a stich, and then move to the other panel and do a stich, and move to the other panel and do a stich.

It's the exactly same stich as if you had the bag inside out and the panels together, except you don't, they are right side out, and seperated. It's one of those SAT type image analysis problems to figure out how to stich from the outside of the bag.

Then what are you doing giving advice on how to see it to someone that doesn't know what it looks like?


Here is my attempt at describing the blind stitch:

Picture this as a panel /----------\

Then this is two panels next to eachother /----------\/----------\

Think about the path the needle would follow as it goes through the \/ with each stitch.

(Assuming you are stabbing from left to right.)

Normally you would push the needle through both pieces at once with them pressed together if you were stitching it while still inside out.

the needle would go through ---\ from the inside and then into the /--- of the next one right?

To do the blind stitch you stab the needle up from the underside of the left panel and then stab it down into the /--- edge, lining them up.

If you then pull the thread through it will pull the two pieces together and it will look like you did a normal stitch from the underside.

I hope that makes sense.

I can't follow tom's description at all either, so maybe between the twodescriptions you can figure it out.

The last time I posted the blind stitch illustration it was exactly what was needed to clarify the situation for someone.
