Quality Vs. Quantity

Post by Rob »

This isn't a video or anything, but this seems the appropriate forum for the question.

Pop quiz hotshots...you've got 50 megs left on your hard drive...2 people release 2 different videos and post them in the files section of the forum. Both videos are the same size (49 megs) but video A is twice as long, but the quality of video is lacking. Now video B is half the length, but of supreme quality! The video is of the same people at the same event. They are both raw footage with minor editing. Which do you download?

i would first download video A to see the whole footage, delete it, and finally donwload video B to see part of A in better quality...so I would keep B on my hard disc...oh wait, no, i wanna have the whole shred, so I guess I would delete B and then download A again....then the quality would definetley suck (because i know B now) and it would annoy me so much that i would rather have B again.........................
maybe I should start the whole thing with B

It would depend on how bad the quality was. If the shorter of the two moves went for say 2 minutes, and the longer went for 4, with 49 meg, I'd still probably go for the long one. However if I thought the quality would make it hard to see the action - say they went for 5 and 10 min, I'd go for quality!

I'd have to take video A, it's always better to take a bit of a hit in quality to get more footage, especially if the shred is really mint. Case in point the recent gym session off the czech site. Yeah the image quality isn't great but this is more that compensated for with the extended amount of footage that you're able to view, and the shred quality is definitely mint and (in my view) makes up for the lack of image quality.

And there are other ways around this 50 megs problem, why do you think they have cd burners? And there is always the option of communicating with the video's creator, and obtaining a better quality copy on tape (or whatever) with the appropriate compensations (read as "money or other prearranged favours").

Then again there is another aspect that isn't accounted for, the author of the footage is also an influencing factor in whether I download a video or not. If I know who created the video and have liked previous efforts then I'm more likely to download the video regardless of file size. But then I'm not too picky about downloading footbag footage, any video of footbag is better than no video :D

I like the ccs3 video, 10 minutes and good quality, and the most important, good shred.

If I had to pick, I would pick super long if its a bunch of different guys, or short if its one guy, because I can see all of his moves in a few runs.

lol, my friend is sitting here trying a shooting blurry drifter, like clip>op in>op out>op in>op in> same clip, lol, he can't even shoot.

Yeah both of Allan's CSS videos are great (CSS2 & CSS3).

As for seeing all of a shredders moves in a few runs, that isn't a very accurate of the majority of shredders that you will see on video, most of them have a staggering arsenal of moves. Just look at people like vasek, ryan, lon, rippin, chad, and many of the people that post in this very forum (erik, derek, rob, sam, chris and everyone else) they each have a vast array of moves that you just won't see in a few runs (unless they happen to bust a super ultra mega guiltless string of 60+ contacts), or even in an entire video segment.

As for that move, has your mate gone mad? That move would be very hard even for someone who has mastery of shooting like ahren, and I wouldn't go giving him too much stick for not being able to shoot, not many people can do it very well (read as dexed cleanly and still get the height)

no, yeah, he's an idiot being stupid, I just thought it was funny, he has no intention of actually being able to hit it.

I think some of you are missing the point of this post. Which would you rather have a short high quality shred video or a long low quality shred video? We are talking about the quality of the video not the shred. For example I have on my hard disk a movie of Vasek's sick three, showing all the moves he attmepts, but the quality isn't that great. I also have a much higher quality movie of just the stuff that he did hit. Which would you download first?

i would download all of that stuff. i dont worry about the quality that much as long as i have new footage to look at. but anyway the better the quality the better the vid.

I think they should be in sections. split it up into 5 files for easy download.
If i was on High Speed i wouldn't care.

Quality of video is far more important to me.
I prefer to be able to see a two minute vid where I can see what's being hit, than a 5 min vid with lots of dexes, spins, and a great soundtrack, but no real idea what is actually going on.
Not meaning to hack on Chan or anything, but an example of this is the Hacrificenovember2002 download I made from this forum. It's a 9 min clip, but I found the quality almost unbarable and many of the tricks were hard to make out. However, his "Last Man Standing" download was excelent in comparason.
Again, I must say the best footage I have come across was downloaded from Oops.
I look forward to their next installment.

Quality.

I compared Flipsider's (or footbag.org's) video of Vasek's semifinal routine (which has frame rate something like 15) and another video of same routine which was taken at full frame rate and it was a lot smoother and so much better to watch.

but those are the same legth though. If you had to choose between the footbag.org sick three with ryan or the sick three made by footbag.cz without ryan, which would you choose?

Oh, sorry, I should have read the topic more carefully...I Was talking about size vs. quality instead of length vs. quality.

When talking about SHRED videos, I like to see what's really happening, so I choose quality. But if we are talking about routines and other competitions it's always nice to see all the players. So, I'd choose the one with all the players and lower quality.

I know, I'm talking against my last posting, but I was a little off-topic. Please forgive me
