is footbag dangerous?
ok, i started this thread because i finally learned how to do the flying clipper, and i told me girlfriend about it, and explained to her what it is, and now she is worried that i am going to hurt myself, and i've told her that if i do hurt myself, it will be because i'm not paying attention to what it is i am trying to do, which i am always paying attention to what i am trying to do, so any advice on how not to get hurt and how to explain to her that i won't get hurt would be nice, so in five years i don't have her begging me to quit playing because she is scared i might hurt myself.

You will find that most footbag tricks are less dramatic and risky than a flying clipper.
Most are controlled and at a medium intensity.
There is a risk of injuries from improper technique (messed knees etc.) and you can really mess up some tricks and twist your ankles pretty bad too.
Also, shin splints seem to happen alot.
So yes there are risks of several things.. so it's sorta dangerous.. but proper technique and good health can prevent alot of all that.

Is footbag dangerous to your health? It can be. It doesn`t have to. If you`re doing superflies off of park benches, that`s obviously more risky than skooling toe stalls. But if you are good about stretching and doing shin exercises, footbag is a relatively safe sport in my opinion.
Compared to other sports, footbag is real safe. I play basketball regularly, and that`s not a contact sport, but I still take a lot of knocks and elbows. Sports like football and hockey are way worse. And even sports like baseball, you have hard objects being hurled at you.
I`ve played footbag nearly 8 years, and my most serious injuries all came from pushing myself too hard and trying to come back from injury too early. If I had spent the last 8 years skateboarding instead, I can guarantee you I would have broken a limb at least once. Same goes to a greater or lesser degree for several other sports... footbag is relatively safe.

The common injuries in footbag seem to be knee problems resulting (generally) from improperly done whirls (do it with the ankle, not the knee!) and sprained ankles, which in my experience seems to come from the double over down/ paradon family of tricks. As long as you pay good attention to what you're doing and realize your body's limits (i.e. don't try some uber-hard trick when you're dead tired and the such), you should be fine. Hey, you'll probably be in better shape than without footbag! Your leg muscles will make women swoon. SWOON, I TELL YOU.

Footbag isn't dangerous ... but 4square is, whenyou're playing with Zeke.
Since when does my face look like a footbag. There's no panels.
Also don't play 4square with Reid, he might do a mirage into your stomach.
Also this guy in chicago that we call cuba, he might kick you in the face too.
Playing footbag, the worst i hurt myself was trying whirl and falling straight on my ankle.
But thats nothing compared to the 4square incidents. Especially the first one. F*****g A**H***!

Poor Kamil, he hasn't scored yet
Hey there's my buddy, Kamil, now
He's gonna have the best view of this awesome kick
My feet sure are fast and accurate
Don't fucking head spike it you idiot!

I think its a simple matter of physics really.
Your body is designed to withstand certain forces, and forces beyond those design limits can damage you severly.
The physics comes in (and please give me a little leeway here, since I failed physics) because Force, as you may know, is Mass X Velocity.
In footbag, we mostly only encounter forces produced by the mass of our own body and the velocity we produce by our own movements, the upper limit of which is typically constrain by how high we can jump. Thats not alot of force, and pretty much exactly the kind of force that our body is designed to tolerate.
Forces increase by adding mass or increasing velocity. Football players encounter greater forces because they have additional mass to worry about, the mass of one or more other football players who want to knock them down and land on top of them. Football players tear ligaments in their legs or get their necks broken because there is the additional mass of these other people putting force on their bodies, forces greater than their ligaments or bones are designed to tolerate. Even basketball players can encounter these kinds of forces because although it is technically not a contact sport accidents can still happen. A good friend of mine tore every ligament in his knee playing basketball because somebody else fell on top of him. The force acting on his leg was multiplied because the mass was doubled (the mass of his own body plus the mass of someone else's body) Bicycle riders deal with greater forces because they use machines that allow them to increase their velocity. When they have an accident, the forces acting on their bodies are multiplied beyond what human bodies are made to tolerate because of that extra velocity. Skateboarders likewise increase their velocity by using their machine to speed up, and probably more importantly they increase their velocity by jumping off of tall things (a flight of steps, a big ramp, etc.).
In footbag we are very safe because the forces acting on our body are never multiplied beyond those produced by our own mass and our mechanically unassisted velocity. Thats exactly the kinds of force my body is made to cope with, so I feel very safe. In freestye, if I fall down and twist a limb underneath me, nobody else ever lands on top of me and my twisted limb, so the forces on that limb don't become intolerable. Likewise, in freestyle footbag, my velocity is never multiplied beyond what a human body can acheive unassisted, unless you're foolish enough to try freestyling while jumping down a flight of steps. Again, I feel very safe.
In ten years of shredding, I've sprained my ankle three times. Once was because I was playing on a sidewalk with alot of debris (pebbles and dust and twigs). This caused me to slip. I was in the middle of a DATW, by the way. Another time was trying a far swirl, and the latest incident was doing a ripstein. I don't really know what happened. I just lost it. In any case, a sprained ankle doesn't worry me much. Its more of an inconveniece, and they get better on their own, needing only a little rest.
Your girlfriend, Austin, has much more to worry about every time you get in a car. Tens of thousands of people are killed, and tens of thousand more are severly injured by automobiles every year. Those cars have tremendous mass and velocity, producing forces that are literally inhuman. Be careful crossing the street, man.

Yeah, fliers with dexes are evil. I sprained my ankle on that flying whirl move (like a "sideways" dragonfly, kind of) and couldn't play for 5 weeks -- I never regained complete flexability from that injury. Be careful with your knees too -- knees are fragile
There are lots of muscle pull/tear/strain injuries too, but you don't really get those as easily from single moves.
Go look around in the health and injuries forum -- so helpful! Who thought of making such a forum? He should be very highly praised! Oh yeah, and I've been injured for over year and haven't played properly since (if at all) -- be careful and learn some stretches!!!!!

I've kicked myself (
) in the face. I was skooling pixie duckings.
...
That's all. I've had shin splints once. Right now my calves are a bit sore but that's only because I didn't stretch enough before and after the shred.
Two weeks ago I had been playing footbag everyday quite hard. The first day I didn't kick at all I went to kick soccer. About two minutes later I had sprained my ankle really badly, and it still effects my game in a bad way.
So I think footbag is a very, very safe sport. That's one of the reasons why I rather play footbag than go snowboarding - a risk of sudden death or serious injury is much lower. I.e. when you don't succee in a big trick (or even in an easy one) when you're snowboarding, you know before you even hit the ground that it's going to hurt. On the other hand, you can attempt Gauntlet without getting any fractured bones.

I kneed myself in the face trying pixie diving once when I was a noob. It was just before I went to bed and I bit my lip really badly and woke up with the best blood stain on my pillow! It was cool
Footbag is definitly a low injury sport. I've missed a few weeks with an ankle injury and have had a few minor injuries that I've forced myself not to play on - but would have if I was at a tournament or something.
Some injuries I've got playing other sports:
Touch Football - in summer I basically have no skin on my knees or elbows for the whole summer. I also fractured my sternum once.
Australian Rules Football - Bruised kidneys (this really hurts), Numerous dislocated fingers, sprains, bruises etc.
And I was very lucky in those sports in terms of injuries. People break bones or do serious ligament damage in those sports all the time. Footbag is more dangerous than going for a walk in a park, but certainly is one of the lower injury sports that exist!

Yeah seriously all I've ever done in footbag is sprained my ankles a few times, gotten shin splints, lost the lottery, been hit by a car after trying Paradox Nemesis down a building (damn you Allan Haggett), and kicked myself in the face.
Okay actually only the first two and the last one.
But in other sports I've gotten more injuries, like when I tore my ACL skateboarding. I'd agree with what Jon says about cars... I'm way more afraid everytime I get into a car than everytime I put on my lavers (okay, CT 520s... I don't use Lavers anymore).

Re: is footbag dangerous?
Footbag really is a low injury sport. Man if your gf is worried your going to hurt yourself when she heard what a flying clipper was I bet she'd freak if she saw some of the things in this thread. Seriously theres a lot worse things you could be doing. Show her you know what your doing and she will probably be less worried.Disturbedboy365 wrote:ok, i started this thread because i finally learned how to do the flying clipper, and i told me girlfriend about it, and explained to her what it is, and now she is worried that i am going to hurt myself
