Biology

Post by Nightmare »

I was reading the other day on some website about a man who taught Biology. In biology one day he decided to bring in a dog from the pound that was going to be youthonized. The students were learning about the digestive system, so the man sedated and proceeded to cut open the dogs stomach to show the digestive system working. He had permision from the principal to do this at a regular highschool. Now what do you think about this?

Well i personally think that this man has some issues. What kind of a sick fuck cuts open a living dog? This is mans best friend were talking about. Even though the dog was going to be youthinized what the hell? Why do it, maybe if it was college but definatly no in a highschool. Frogs, Fish and whatever else isnt common for a pet is okay...But a dog one of the most common pets this is just sick.

Personally I really don't think it's a problem at all. I mean lets face it, the dog is going to die either way - at least the way that it did die it helped some people learn. I also find human sentimentality towards particular species of animals and not others to be ridiculous. I mentioned this recently I think - in Australia one of the major causes of extinction in birds and mammles is peoples pet cats. Australia incidentally has the highest rate of extinction of any country in the world. Now while you could argue that that's because most other nations wiped out their animals years ago, it's still a serious issue and personally I would be happy to kill every cat in Australia with my bare hands if I could. This is the problem - people see "humanity" reflected in certain animals and so they feel a connection with those animals and have their vision clouded.

A lot of it is ignorance as well I guess - I don't think people own cats because they want to destroy our natural environment - I think they probably think that they are "responsible" pet owners and their pet isn't doing any damage. They may even think their cat does not respond to it's insticts like every other animal on the planet and doesn't attack birds because that would be wrong. The fact is that the only way to stop a cat from killing native animals is to keep it locked up inside the house. Cats with bells learn to be more efficiant killers than those without and you can't teach a cat not to be a killer.

Sorry I've hijacked the topic a bit - but to be honest I think both issues stem from the sentimentality you attach to the animals. People eat dogs in some parts of the world. Hey I'd even be keen to - I'm always ready to try something new.

I wouldn't have a problem cutting open a dead dog, but one that's still alive, even if it's sedated, really churns my stomach. If I were in that class I probably would have filed something with the school board-- that sorta stuff is just unnecessary. Besides, I assume any dissection he had planned would have worked just as well if the animal were dead.

I think once the principal has knowledge of this activity and approves it, it is his responsibility. i say its ok, but only because the dog was sedated. and the situation was educational. that takes it from torture into science.

I don't think you can possibly call it torture. I think torture implies intent to harm or make the subject suffer. Surgery is not torture.

I think they could have gotten the same learning experience with another animal that was dead? I think the principal also has some tweaks to even let the teacher do that.

I also read this story. Why do it? To make people better understand a biological process. He had an opportunity to make his class learn more than they normally would (presumably) if he notated pages of text and he took it. "To hear is to forget, to see is to remember, to do is to understand".
Is it gross? I guess it's pretty disgusting. But is it cruel or immoral? No. Just because a dog is a common pet it doesn't grant it special privileges when it comes to dying. We kill things all the time (unnecessarily I might add) that have similar attributes as dogs in terms of the important things - like level of intelligence and being able to feel pain. Pigs for instance. I guess it's disconcerting seeing an animal treated like this when it's of the same type that we love and care for as pets - personally I think that's just what happens when you're as ridiculously detached from our burgers as we are.

I'd be interested why you think it'd be ok for college but not highschool.

Agreed. But why not just use a DEAD animal? It's not like a sedated creature is necessary to show an animal's innards.

I think possibly, and I'm just throwing this out there, the point of doing it to a living animal and not a dead animal is that a living animal is alive - so it's body is still working, while a dead animal is dead - so it's not still working...

Its the maturity level of highschoolers, so by saying better in college im saying the maturity level is higher. I personally raise animals for slaughter. Im in the FFA what do you except, I do get attach to the animals and cant watch them being slaughtered. In two years i will overcome this and slaughter animals my self in my schools oncampus meat labs.

My science teacher knew a botanist at uni that when he was giving lectures would put a plant in liquid nitrogen and then smash it and then would do the same with a white lab mouse and then get stuck into people for caring more about the mouse than the plant... only some girls complained and he was told he couldn't do it any more... So the next year he used a sledge hammer instead of the liquid nitrogen! :P

It's fucking sick that a teacher would slick open an animal, regardless of it's purpose. What if I was doing it simply because it amused me? Dissecting is gross to begin with, and the education received could have been received elsewhere. This guy should be fired for doing this in a public school.
