Tuscon eh? Maybe there is a reason for me to go to my Dads Trial in Sierra Vista after all? A mirken bag would be worth it.

Yes, when you organize one.

Seriously, you yourself said it: you know several people in the area who would love to go. So what`s stopping you from throwing a tourney? If you build it, they will come. Arizona isn`t that far from Cali or Colorado. If you throw a tournament, and announce it, you`d be surprised how many good players will attend, and how far away they`d come. Genzu sponsors tournies all the time, so you could also probably get sponsorship pretty easily. I just finished helping organize a tournament here in Japan, and you`d be amazed how many prizes I got by just writing people on this forum:

"Dear _____, I`m holding a tournament in Japan in 2 months. I know you stitch bags. If you have the time and inclination, do you think you could donate a couple of your bags to our tournament as prizes? I like cake. "

... and then *BAM* I got prizes in the mail a month later.

Throw a tournament. It`s work, but its totally worth the effort. And when its done, you`re a local hero. Shit, if Josh Penney hadn`t thrown a tournament in NYC 8 years ago, I likely wouldn`t be playing at all.

Yep, if you build it, they will come. We just had our first footbag event ever in Rochester a week ago, and it was an incredible success. Here's how Tom Mosher put it to me, and this really works...

1. Give it a name.

2. Figure out a design to put on T-shirts and post it online.

3. Tell people you're having a tournament.

and that's it! that's all you need to do to get people to come.

Then, you find a place to hold your event... AZ is dry, so you can probably hold it outdoors in a local park FOR FREE. Then, contact a local printer to make up a few t-shirts. There is information online about the formulas you use for judging. Find a local hotel for everyone to stay at, and approach them about a group rate. Even if you can't get a discount, footbag players pack rooms so tight that it's cheap any way you do it. Also, scout out crash space for the people who want to sleep on floors.

So, then what you need is HYPE. Get people to post online about it. another thing I learned from Mosher is to post like you've never been more excited about anything in your life! it gets other people psyched up, and more likely to make a 6 hour drive just to play some kickyball with you for a weekend. Post updates on your tournament situation every few days, and get people who are coming to post / hype about it, too.

Our first tournament was a dream come true. People came from all over the area, and we had 5 BAP members. Your first tournament can be just as fun. Make sure you have an adult to host the player's party at their house so you can all chill and have a few beers after your legs are destroyed from freestyle.

Have a place to shred, have an after-shred spot, have a place to sleep, and have a few events. as they say, ba da bing... Oh yeah, ask stitchers personally for prizes. You'll get some.
BRICK!
