Kinda lonely because everyone went off to Tokyo for TSG III...I wish I could go but money is quite tight right now. I also am kind of swamped with translation and proofreading work. Oh well...

Had a great solo session today though! It was pretty humid, so I sweated more than a mad dog on the south side of the equator with a ten-foot pole on the broad side of a barn :)

Highlights and comments:

paradon>pdx egg>paradon>pdx egg>seal
This was definitely the high point of my session. This combo was inspired by the new video from the Finnish folks. I think Mikko hits this combo in that video. I love non-shuffle, technical combos like this!

gyro clip>gyro clip>spinning clip>gyro clip>spinning clip>gyro clip>gyro clip>gyro clip>run
Spinning combos are so sweet. As most players say, keeping the back straight when spinning is of utmost importance. If the back isn't straight it is nearly impossible to set your clipper accurately. Last weekend, I was stoked to hit inspinning mirage bs!!

pdx whirl>whirl>pdx whirl>whirl>run

sidewalk>ripwalk>sidewalk>ripwalk
Definitely a bread-and-butter combo. Repeated stepping is tough for me since most of my shuffle involves pixie sets. My strong side stepping is pretty good but my flip needs a lot of tender loving care. I was playing around with some both-sided atomic stuff and noticed that the set is completely passive--only the dex leg does the work. In other words, the dex leg sets the bag for you. You have to "load" the dex leg before the dex: This is difficult to explain with words but the feeling is that you put all of your weight on the leg that does the first dex; the leg is "charged" with energy as you push all of your weight into the ground. This pushing into the ground feeling seems to be quite important. I combined this feeling with a feeling of doing a reverse walk-over and my stepping really started to feel good. The image of doing a reverse walk-over helps me keep my clipper foot close to the ground and as passive as possible. I really felt a huge difference in my dexing window with this new image of stepping!

A run with pdx drifter BSOS, and a run with pixie whirl BSOS

Just got an email from Kenzo and he said he hit torque>pdx whirl>repeat!

Time to update the ol' blog.

I had Andrew stay with me for about four days when he was here for TSG. I was a little worried that my small room would bother him, but he didn't seem to mind. We had a good time shredding and exploring a few of the sights in Kyoto. One of the most memorable times was getting kicked out of the park by a money-hungry cowboy with a guitar! It ended up for the better, though, because Andrew got to see one of my favorite shred spots--under a big temple gate. We had a short session there because Andrew's legs were a bit tired from all the travelling and shred.

I was very impressed with Andrew's shuffle style and especially his serious approach to his game. Makes me wish I could go back to being a nineteen-year-old! For some reason, I thought Andrew was much older than nineteen, so it shocked me when I realized how 'young' he is. I got the feeling that all the travelling and being on his own had really matured him. I was a nervous shmuck when I was nineteen! We also checked out
some temples and had a relaxing time in a hot spring in the mountains. I knew Andrew was starting to become a bit of a Japanophile when, as we got into the hot spring, he remarked that he might like to live in Japan for a bit!

Andrew--Looking forward to the blog update and some photos!

Yesterday's session in Osaka with the sadistic trio--Otayan, Kenzo, and I:

It's really starting to warm up, and that means SWEAT! I was a bit surprised when I showed up to find only Kenzo and Otayan playing. Usually we have a bigger crowd. Some highlights:

Otayan had a sore hamstring so he was trying to take it easy, which is something that is tough for him. Still, he was hitting some very technical combos like dyno>barrage, paradon>barrage>dod, and toe driter>barrage drills. He has a very unique style because he's mainly a two-dex player, not a shuffler or a ducker. His links are quite intense.

Kenzo looked pretty worn out from lots of consecutive days of playing and work, but he still managed to lay down some sweet runs and combos: phoenix>tomahawk, blurriest>tomahawk, paradox torque>paradox torque (last week), 16 gyro clippers!!!, long runs of just spins, etc. He also had a few good attempts at ducking his barraging set. It definitely looks do-able for him.

I had a good day, hitting a smooth pigbeater BSOS, frantic butterfly, some long guiltless runs, and spinning ducking butterfly BS. I have been trying to incorporate some more shuffle into my game, so I was stoked to hit sidewalk>blur>parkwalk>blizzard>dimwalk into a run. I need to try to incorporate more frantic stuff, as I have a deep, smooth frantic set. With some work, I could probably hit frantic over down.

Toward the end of the session, Kenzo and I were doing some spinning stuff and came up with some really cool drills. One massive, god-like drill would have you go through fifty-five spinning tricks to complete the drill!

Ate some nice green curry and took it easy on the river with Kaori this evening.

Need to strap on the lavers and work up a sweat soon.

It's hot and sticky and rainy in Kyoto.

I like to call Kenzo and act like I'm the pizza man.

I went to an excellent museum of ethnology a few weeks ago and the experience has stuck in my mind. Lots of colorful clothing, pottery, and instruments from around the world. They had an interesting section on language in the last room of the museum. There were lots of different dialects in Japan in the past...

Brahms' late-period piano intermezzi are excellent. They are full of simplicity and complexity, joy and sadness. Any Glenn Gould fans?

Ken is here. We had some dinner and some beers and I'm getting to hear all the Worlds stories first-hand.

Decided to throw this old video out. We made this maybe two years ago. It's pretty funny:

P.S. I have lots of funny and serious videos from Japanese footbag sites. Anyone interesting in seeing some?

Footbaggers in Kyoto

Post by thejugularjuggler »

Hey, Adam and Genzo, I guess this is mostly to you both. I am a beginning footbagger living in Uji and am looking for a practice partner. I got a message from Genzo via the footbagging community on Mixi and heard about your practice sessions and wondered if I could join you the next time.

As I said, I am a beginner, so the only move I can hit pretty consistently are consecutive toe delays and consecutive leg overs. I can usually hit a clipper delay or a butterfly, but am struggling with the timing of the mirage and have no idea how to do an osis despite reading several tutorials and seeing several videos.

I've been in Japan for a total of 2 years or so...I'm trying to work as a freelance translator, and play a bit of guitar on the side, so Adam, it seems I have some things in common with you.

It's been awhile.

Kenzo, Debi, Morio, and I had a session in Kyoto yesterday. We played at Kyoto Station, which is a masterpiece of architecture. As I expected, we were soon kicked out by the security guard. We wandered around and ended up playing around a fountain in front of Higashi Hongan-ji, a large Pure Land temple.

Getting busy and having all my bags either bust or lose filling, I hadn't played in a long time. I felt the excitement that comes up before a session, and it reminded me of how fun footbag is.

I was pretty rusty, but I still have many tricks left in my muscle memory. Nothing special was hit in the session by any of us--we mainly drilled stuff. I was doing some simple drills to get the feeling again. I want to start playing about three times a week again!

Kenzo's game is looking really good. He didn't hit anything big, but his style looks much more developed. He has a new stability to his game. He was working on consecutive ripwalks. I did see him hit spinning whirl bsos like nothing. His mobii are getting pretty reliable also.

Morio has increased his repertoire, hitting whirls, dynos, and dlos. His infinities looked good also.

Debi was having trouble with shin splints, so he had a low-key session. He did hit some nice shuffle though.

Jason--sorry I didn't notice your post until now. Kenzo tried to get in contact with you yesterday. What is your contact info? We should get together and talk. What kind of translation are you doing?

Yesterday's practice session

Post by thejugularjuggler »

Hi Adam,

It sounds like it was a good session yesterday. I'm sorry I couldn't meet you guys; actually I got Kenzo-san's e-mail and went to Kyoto station to meet you, but I arrived about ten minutes late and couldn't find you. I looked around the various platforms and parks immediately around the station and the Cube mall, but didn't find you guys -- after reading your post, I realized that you had gone to Higashi Hongan-ji...oh well. If you are interesting in kicking sometime, please let me know -- I'd rather not post my info on a public forum, but you can ask Kenzo-san for my phone number and keitai e-mail address.

I'm still a beginning footbagger...I will try my best not to slow the pace of you and the other Kankeri footbaggers. 宜しくお願い致します!

Until now, I have only translated a few short stories and general business documents (mission statements, environmental reports, technical defect reports, presentations, etc.) but I recently got a part-time job with a patent office in Osaka and they will train me in patent translation. I read on either this blog or the Kankeri webpage that you came to Japan to study Buddhism -- but that you are a translator for a music magazine? Sounds interesting! Hope to meet you and the rest of the Kankeri crew soon!

Warm regards,

Jeremy

Today's session

Post by Adam »

A few whirls, some stepping...

Also messed around with some gyro stuff and hit gyro pickup bs for the first time.

I have a sweet new bag made by Kenzo's girlfriend. I need to change my shoes though--my current Lavers have holes in the bottom and are all ripped up.

Need to do some more drilling.

Stretched well afterwards and am having some spaghetti...

If you're getting new shoes, have you considered g-Unit G6s? QP uses them. I have a few pairs, and I love them. I'm never switching back to lavers. Say hey to Kenzo and everybody for me.
