The day before the BCS was due to begin, Dan Ednie had a kick at King George Square.
I filmed his session, and made this video. http://ausfootbag.org/uploads/[insert_title_here].wmv
It's a mellow clip, set to Portishead's 'Only You', so don't expect to get pumped up from watching it. But still, I must add that this is one of the few videos that I'm actually proud of making.
Note, it's from September 2004, so it's kind of old footage.
WMV9 | 29.96MB | 5min 23sec
I might make a higher quality version for Quicktime soon, if anyone wants it.

) I really liked all the angles. Really good. I wasn't pumped after watching this video, but I sure was impressed. Your pretty good at video production, are you going to film school or something

Wow, that video was awesome. The music synched so well with the shred, and I like the little things you put in, like the little montage of random 1 sec shots that fit with the scratches. The film noir feel really fit well with the shred. Also, the drifter > vortex > repeat x 4 sequence was just plain beautiful. One of my favorite videos.

That was actually my last film made under Big Boy Productions. I quit the business last week. Too much pressure and not time to edit footbag films.habitat wrote:a big boy production, a dead doll film...

No, not doing film school, but thanks. Just love combining two of my favourite things... footbag and film.

[quote="qphox"]...though I'm not sure why that has affected my viewing judgement.[quote]
Me too.
What happend between the two parties is essentially their issue. It's merely a clash of personalities. It didn't involve me, so I tried not to involve myself in it.
Ausfootbag has moved on and is growing stronger by the day.
Don't let that incident deflect from the fact that Dan has a beautiful style and is really good at footbag.
He's spent alot of time studying Ales's style and (I think) HIS style definately reflects that.
He's among my favorite players to watch and I count myself as fortunate to be able to film him playing on the odd occasion. Because his style, his flow, gave me the inspiration to make this video.
To James_Dean:
If you look carefully, you'll see a few other touches. One of which involves a person disappearing in the background. They just walk into nothingness. It's pretty obvious when you know where to look.

Thanks for all the comments. I'd really appreciate more commentry on my 'production', so that I can make an even better one, next time.
I'm in the middle of my next effort, and I've got about 6 more tapes to go through. The intenion is to make one film per tape.
What I really need are more ideas on how I can improve.
Constructive criticism greatly appreciated.

Gareth's Video Club constructive criticism:
PRO: Sweet song! -- You took advantage of those "chunky" elements of the song, which gets big points -- very noticably adds to the overall agreeability of the video.
PRO: Sweet shred! Dan(?)'s style works very well with the music -- he is very smooth and flowing.
PRO: I like the text synched to the intro and how the title text fades in contrast to the instant appearance of the leading text.
CON: I find the font to be too generic and "clipart"y. Do you know what I mean? Every individual font evokes unique aspects of unique cultures and times. Font types are not simply aesthetic, fanciful "letters", they are reactions to events and trends in history. It is important to use fonts with this in mind.
PRO: I like the black and white; it's pretty and works well with the music.
PRO: Rad trick at 00:49! That was so subtle and works well.
CON: The blue colour seems too warm and I feel a different shade of blue (because the blue is good) would work better. The text is also very chunky around the edges which is distracting and displeasing to look at.
CON: This is a personal preference, but I try to avoid using "black", so fading to a simple black screen is a no-no for me. What does it mean? What does it represent and evoke in the viewer? Nothingness? Does the video end and begin again within a fraction of a second? What I like to do is change the contrast of the video so that it is NEAR-black, but still retains the quality of a footbag video, rather than reverting (regressing?) to nothing.
CON: Some of the clips, noteable at 1:12ish are shaky in the camerawork.
PRO: Gee -- I just caught another real subtle trick I completely missed the first couple times I watched: 1:14 -- jogger in colour! That's really yummy. I would love to see more of this in a more noticably manner. I feel sad that 95% of people probably completely missed that
-- plus the exclamation mark on the guy's back -- good stuff, though again with the fonts -- I'm distracted by the font in that exclamation mark and feel that a more angular font would have worked better (perhaps with the entire video).
PRO: I like how you tries different angles -- the wormseye view is refreshing and the black and white and worms eye together really compliment the environment -- the buildings look stunning in this video; the talls ones with many windows (this is also a good contrast with the more classical architechture in a couple of the shots). Oh -- a big pro is at 2:39 when you film at eye level and pan downwards to a wormeye -- I love that! That has a real professional feel to it!
CON: Too much empty black. 3:05 -- i find the square thingy around the bag distracting and does not add much. Is there a purpose for this?
UNSURE: "This shade of autumn" @ 3:13 -- clever, but I found the effect to have missed its mark. The colour has a real over-saturated "RGB" (I don't know if that makes sense to anyone but me??) feel to it. What's the word I'm looking for...cliche? I feel this could have been more creatively exposed.
PRO: Again 3:12 -- panning to eye-level view. Yummy -- these are some of my favourite moments in the video, I'm finding! There is one scene in "Where the Ripwalk Ends", where Caro is shredding, just before the girl says, "Was that a mobius?", where I think Eli pans down and zooms in simultaneously with a fisheye lense...it is my favourite moment in the video! It's so beautiful!!!! I guess this is something that you probably wouldn't want to overuse, though. The fish-eye effect at the end of this clip worked really well too (minus the black). I don't usually like the "fake fish-eye", but I feel this was okay
CON: 4:06ish -- I'm not sure why you keep going to black. I am trying to view the video from an aesthetic point of view, so I am being really fucking picky. It is confusing me in this state of mind and makes me think that these black moments are random and purposeless. (Good use of colour here, though...)
PRO: Nice to see a close up of Dan and the clocktower was really pretty too
(in colour -- nice!)
CON: Credits are chunky, but this is probably due to web-quality video. The font works better here, but it is still fairly weak. I realize that the text in the intro is probably weaker because of it's orientation in the picture. Orientation of text is maybe even more influential than font!! Choose where you put your text carefully.
CON: The "Dead Doll Film" thing at the end feels completely unrelated and feels like an advertisement for something completely unrelated to the previous video. I also find the intro animation cliched and conflicting in it's epic jingle and animation which feels unprofessional to me. This is purely constructive. I realize if you made that animation how much work probably went into it, it just distracts me and feels inappropriate.
PRO: I like the subtle use of colour in the "AusFootbag" title at the end.
ADVICE: You used a lot of wormeye, but how about birdseye? Try filming from above. Stand on something and hold the camera as high above your head as you can, tilting the viewfinder so you can still see what you're filming. You could also try manually panning by walking around your subject. This is hard to do without being all shakey -- I'm really shakey

I love this video. I dont know why i didnt comment sooner. The camera angles were great, and the shred was nice. It was a low key video. Like you said, wont pump anyone up, but the music DID go so well with Ednie's shred! I love all the subtleties (sp?) and subliminal messages
I dont have a problem with the black, but it would be nice if you used a different color.

I was experimenting alot with layering, thoroughout the film. For example, the man running is a new layer with the edges of the screen cropped. Then it was just a case of tracking it with the motions of the man running. That's how the 'background' was B&W, while the man running (the foreground) was in colour....i find the square thingy around the bag distracting and does not add much. Is there a purpose for this?
That's how I did the bag thing.
Oh, and the shakey camera thing, I was trying to make it look like Dan's contact with the ground made the film jump. If you look closely you'll see the top of the frame drop into view when Dan hits tricks. It didn't come off looking the best, though.
Thanks for your detailed review, Erik. I don't agree with all of your comments, there, but I do agree with most.
Oh, and this was the last film made under the 'Big Boy Productions' logo. It was a business some friends and I set up, to make promotional videos and web design. I quit reciently and I feel good for it... so no more 'BBP' films... now they're all me.
Oh, as for 'Dead Doll' that's my 'artisitic' name, or pen name. I used it when I wrote poetry, and now I use it for my films.
