Well, it's been two years of footbag this month! Happy anniversary! I celebrated by hitting Fume bs and a new 5 and 6 add!

I haven't been on modified for a while, it's been so busy and messed up over here. After my last post, I had one more session which resulted in another 50+ contact BOP string and weakside Spanishfly (yay), then a 4 day break to attend the graduation ceremonies at my former school. That breka totally killed me and I lost almost everything I had going for me :(. My consistancy dropped a ton and with that so did my motivation to play. I think my highest BOP string since that time was 33, and I only got it twice out of about 3 hours worth of practice. Pathetic!

On a good note, I received my Suderbag last Monday! Yay! It's rolly since it's not yet fully broken in, but it's great. I've been rolling it around in my fingers a lot and even threw it in the washer. The weight and size are choice, the fabric I can only pray will break in further. The panels seem stiff and the bag does not really conform when you go for the delay. It basically maintains it's spherical shape which makes it very unforgiving and hard to transition too. It's making me hold my delays a bit longer but that requires patience - patience I just can't keep since my motivation and consistancy has dropped so much. When the bag gets a bit better I know everything will turn around!

Byrin's Game = (Motivation - X) + (Consistancy - 2X) * (Playing time / 2) where X = shitty. I think that kinda sums it up

Anywho, I wanted to post some videos of me at around 12 months of playing. I'll probably do that soon, I just need to get them uploaded.

EDIT

Here are the videos, in chronological order. The last two videos were posted here about a year or so ago so I don't know if anyone remembers them or not. The first one, as far as I know, has not been uploaded or posted on the forums and was more of just a friend sharing video thing between Chris, Conrad and I.

Just Some Shred
Length - 3:33
Size - 5.6 megs
Description - My first appearance in a video. I've been playing for 9 months when this came out though a lot of the footage goes back further than that. What I like about this is that it contains footage of the first time I hit a lot tricks (Mullet - "Oh yeah!").

Byrin and Conrad Teaser
Length - 1:35
Size - 3.7 megs
Description - As the name implies, it's short and it's a tease. Well, not really but we had a lot of fun making it. The music is the theme from Quake Arena and we made it work. I'm happy to announce that I cleaned up a lot of the sloppiness that this video captured

Byrin and Conrad Part 3
Length - 4:05
Size - 10.6 megs
Description - The first video I have made was this one, and I'm still proud of it. This was basically the last day I got to spend with Conrad before I had to leave for provincials, so we kicked a lot. This was also the day that I played on shin splints (very bad idea). It's an intense video that basically shows off how BOPpy my strings are and how short our string length is. It ends with some good attempts from the both of us anyways.

Anywho, we here in Edmonton are currently in the video production phase so it would be great to compare the progress I have made in the whatever time it is when these two videos are put out. Watching older videos is so cool because it reminds you of just how much it pays off to work hard by showing how much better you have gotten :)

I've been kicking fairly well as of lately. Yesterday I drove out to Edmonton and kicked with Kevin (he broke in and had to kick), Rory and with Travis for a little bit. It was quite fun and rewarding!

I hit contacts 1 - 10, 11 - 18 and 21 - 28 of my Shred 30. Right now I'm practicing it in three segments (of 10 tricks) and it's really been working out alright. Considering that I have about a month to practice, I think I can do it. Rory got as far as his 23 contact before dropping and it was awesome.

I kicked pretty well last nite. I had some really solid runs which I am happy see get a bit longer and more diverse (of course there is still the consistancy I have to get over but that will come). I came sickenly close to Phoenix > Blur [rpt] - I so want that combo right now!! Arg!

As for what went down, I hit DATW > Atom Smasher [rpt] which I totally remember Mr. Genz suggesting it for Kevin to hit at the MFJ. That was very rewarding! I also hit... umm... Gyro Clipper x 10 inspired by Jeremy Mirken. I can't remember what else I was doing. Kevin hit Assassin > Pigbeater > Smog > footed Atomic Flail. Woah! Flabbergasted was I.

Anywho, my knees have been feeling really good lately which means that I can slowly start to introduce stepping sets into my game. I pulled my groin a few days ago and that seems to have gone away which is great. The only thing I need now is more sleep and I'm set to go :)

Go and shred, that is ;)

It was just Rory and I at the YMCA this evening, and remained that way for about 4/5 of the time. We didn't have one person show up for about an hour and a half, then we got 2 people and their friends came and it came out to around 6 kids playing kicky sacky. Our session was pretty sweet and yielded some good results despite the lack of interest from the kids.

Rory was hitting some stylie links and even had a guiltless run of over 25 contacts!! HOLY SMOKIES!! It was full of pixie shuffle, had some Ducking Butterflies and even a few spinning sets from his clipper! Egads it was an epic run! Despite having shin splints he stills gets his groove on with the bag!

As for myself, I hit a new fearless link and had a few good runs. I also did some drills - some were alright and others were harder then what they should have been. I did a lot of zooming and spinning/gyro things when I got tired and that turned out pretty good as well. Here's the overview:

Phoenix > Mobius bs
Phoenix > Mobius > PS Whirl unsealed
Gyro DLO > DATW > Tapdown first attempt (I told you I would do it Kevin :P)
Almost had Spinning Clipper > Spinning Ducking Clipper > Spinning Osis [rpt]
Came moderately close to Double Spinning Osis on both sides
A lot of contacts of Spinning Clip > Ducking Clip
Magellan > PLO [rpt] > Smear > Pixie Mirage [rpt] > run > Pixie Pickup > Paste > Pixie Pickup > drop Paste
I think 4 consecutive Spinning Ducking Clippers on one side, 3 on the other?
Spinning Ducking Butterfly bsos

All in all it was pretty fun and lighthearted. I hit contacts 1 > 8, 11 > 20 and 21 > 27 of my Shred 30 at the end of the session when I was exhausted, so that was swell. What made me happy was knowing that I have now hit the first two segments completely (all 10 tricks) and the last 7 contacts (I changed it a bit from last time). That means I can do basically all the links, I just need to drill some tricks and work a few links then BLAMO!

When each segment gets easier and more consistant I will then break it into different segments, maybe something like contacts 5 - 15, 16 - 25 and then really focus on the first and last five contacts by themselves. The beginning and the end are very important imo - I absolutely do not want to start my Shred 30 with a drop on the third contact or something, it would completely destroy my confidence and probably throw my game off. If I can start out strong then it will really help to carry that momentum further into the shred. As for the last five contacts, it has three 4 adds and two 5 adds so it reallly carries the points. I don't know if I can throw in Montage at the end James, sorry bro

That's about it from over here. I really want to practice my Shred 30 again but I will probably do that tomorrow afternoon. What I really need to drill is some links into and out of Ducking Butterfly. I think my consecutive record for those is about five so it definitely could use a bit of work! That and I should work on Drifters and Barflies again.

That will be tomorrow's goal if my legs feel up for it!

Guess who called me yesterday?! Kevin from Montana!! Woah! It was such a nice surprise and a real treat to hear from him again. We talked about footbag and he told me he is for sure coming up for ShrEdmonton with Evan!! YEAH!! That got me real excited and I had a kick dedicated to him after we were done. It didn't last long but I drilled pixie sets and Ducking Butterflies.

Today it was pretty rough. I went to a party Saturday evening and got pretty hammered. The party was real fun and I decided to call it in at around 5:30 in the morning. I woke up at 10:30 with such a huge hangover though, ugh. I helped clean up the yard, held back vomitting then got dropped off home.

After getting my composure back my dad cut up a shotgun shell and I put grade 7 pellets into my Suderbag one by one. I think I put a totaly of 30 or so in and now it is sweet! It's a lot heavier and it rolls SOOO MUCH less then in comparison to what it used to! I tested it out with a two hour session sarting at 9pm.

It was real good. Despire sucking it up a bit, I ended my session by hitting contacts 1 - 10, 11 - 20 and 21 - 28 of my Shred 30!!!! It felt soooo good!! I'm loving this - it seems like everytime I work on my Shred 30 it gets more consistant and a tiny bit easier! My knees, though a bit sore, are feeling really good and I can't wait until I can kick with the E-town crew again :)

Ah poops, I totally hate it when I get mixed up on the phone :(. I once didn't recognize my best friend of 9 years, boy that was embarrassing

Sorry Sam  :(

I went to Edmonton last nite and it yielded some good things. I typed this post up early this morning, only to have it deleted when my internet crashed so I'm just going to put int he highlights:

Whirl War 1 x 5ish
Food Processor to start a run
Spinning Osis > Gyro Osis [rpt] on two different occassions
Some good pixie shuffle runs...
Barrage > DATW > Legbeater > Barrage > DATW
Blender > Torque (sweet link :))
Had some 5s in a run... like Phoenix bs and a Mobius I think

Some other stuff too I guess, but I would much rather wait until I hit it THEN post it here. I wanna work the Shred 30 again :). I got to the 13th contact on my first and only try which I was really happy about. Maybe I will try to go even further tonite but we'll see :)

Not too bad of a session last nite - after watchign the video of us that Kevin put out I just had to have a kicky! I mainly drilled some things that I have put off for a while but I did manage 4 new tricks, which are...

Atomic Drifters bs
Tapping Drifter bs

I drilled atomic sets since I reckon I should if I want to be able to throw them in runs. I basically just hit Tap > Atom Smasher [rpt] and Eggplant > Tapping Legover [rpt], which ended up being harder than I remember them to be. Ah well, I got the hang of it in the end.

I also went over Torques, Drifters, spins/zooms, a tiny bit of pixie stuffs and... umm... toe set double downs. Yeah, that is correct. They felt pretty good, though it seems like my Barflies are pretty poopy witht he Suderbag - I guess I was relying on the stickiness of my Aurora when performing them.

I came close to yet another 5 > 5 > 5 last nite, which is weird. I've only ever hit one fearless string of three contacts and yet came close to atleast 5 others that I can remember off the top of my head. Weird, eh? That kind of had me wondering if players drill fearless tricks. I know I have seven 5 add tricks I do at the end of my sessions but I wouldn't call that drilling...

Man, I got EQUALLY excited about Kevin coming when I read that.

Though I'm just as excited to hear that it was actually Sam...

Too bad you can't make it Crowley, that's unfortunate for sure. :(

Spinning Clipper > Spinning Ducking Clipper > Spinning Osis > [rpt] > run > Zooming Vortex :)

Yay!! Finally I hit it!

I had two sessions today, though the first ended after about 30 minutes just because things didn't feel right. My legs felt as though they were acting too fast, delaying not enough and reacting too early which meant the footbag hit the floor a lot. Still, I managed 44 alternating Osis first attempt which is a new record so that was good.

Eight hours later I had another session which went by a lot better. I went into it with nothing on my mind then to just play and that really helped me out. Normally I always go into sessions thinking of particular things to drill which, after a while, gets to be a drag and a bit boring.

Anywho, some good things were hit. Including the run at the top of the post, I hit...

Dimwalk > Blur x 4 first attempt to work on stepping sets
Spinning Ducking Clipper x 5 on bs
Ducking Clipper x 12 which is a new record. Shouldn't be too long before I break that again.
Gyro Pickup > Muted Pixie Clip > Gyro Legover > Muted Pixie Clip > Mobius (got up to the second MPC with the left leg)

I thought there was more, but I guess not. So only a few good things were hit :P. I changed up my Shred 30 - Ducking Butterflies are the devil so I substituted them with normal Butterflies. The score drops about 11 points but it is still +200 so that's right on. It's a lot easier and once my Pdx Whirls start getting their act together I will see how far into it I can get.

In other news, I was juggling like a madman today and found a new way to begin!! You know how normally people hold one ball in one hand, two balls in the other then start by throwing one of the balls in the hand that held two?? Well I completely learnt how to NOT do that! I start by throwing the one ball, then quickly throw the other two (from the same hand) in the air in quick succession right into some juggly goodness. I also learnt another "trick" of juggling which I'm getting better at - you throw one ball in the air with the other two in each of your hands. As the ball comes down, you throw the two into the air parallel to the other ball. You catch it the one and as the two come down you throw the one back up!

Juggling is so fun!! I should make a video since I doubt anyone understood any of my descriptions

Oh, speaking of Kevin, I uploaded some pics from the final session we had before us crazy canucks had to go back to our igloos. MFJ2 was so fun but unfortunately I was too busy kicking to capture very many memories on the camera.

Man, I wanted to kick with you guys so bad that morning, but I drank way too much the night before and my legs felt like rusted iron.

PS: Stop whining about the cold! You're from Canadia, you should be used to -70 weather! Hehe, just teasing. I lived 40 miles from Canadia for 15 years, I know how bad it can get on the tundra.

It was funny how in that final shred morning circle...Byrin and I were the two Candians, and the only guys with short shorts and t-shirts/no-sleeves. We don't know the meaning of cold. ;)

ALSO: If you look Reeeeaaallly close at that last photo, you can almost see the girls who flashed us from the 2nd story window.

ha, that picture of me was taken right before I just sat down and quit. I was so tired/sick/hungover/cold that morning. I should have quit being a little bitch and stripped down to my shorts. I will regret that until I kick with you again  Btw byrin, when I was videotaping you, the angle I had made you seem godlike. Too bad Hi-8 tape sucks the smeagma off my nutsack :!:

Aha, smeagma! When I first saw it I thought you said Smeagle (from Lord of the Rings). I was a bit confused for a second there ;)

I had some kicky sacky baggy footy time last nite which lasted from 9pm until midnight. I drilled Whirls a lot, got some success to spin out of them better and some other things. I tied my Pdx Whirl record, 7, again. It is SO overdue for a breakin!

Anywho, what everyone came here to read. I hit 6 new fearless links! Yay, go Wylie!

Spinning Osis > Mobius on both sides. A bit later, this happened:
Spinning Ducking Osis > Mobius bs

Then I started going for a sweet/hard/stylin' six add. I came real close to it by missing the catch on one side. It was Gyro Weaving Torque with no plant after the duck. Blarg, it's a toughie! After that I decided to try another fearless link that was just itching to be hit.

Mobius > Mobius bs

That was an awesome feeling link and I was very shocked to hit it. I didn't think I could zoom out of Torque but I guess I can now

In the last dieing 60 minutes, feeling very tired and dehydrated, I decided to go for another fearless link. This took about a combined total of 100 attempts to hit and was so frustrating because normally I don't suck balls at it. Anyways, it was Tomahawk > Tomahawk (bs of course :D). No word of a lie, out of roughly fifty-ish attempts I did with each leg, the bag rolled off my foot approximately 5 out of every 6 attempts. It was pissing me off and I was getting tired quickly.

When I did finally hit it, haha, I caught the bag then threw it on the floor. With a stern, mean gaze I pointed at it and said in a very low voice:

"Fuck bag, I own you."

Then I picked it up with a wicked smile on my face and called it a nite. As frustrating as it was to drop a trick so much, I went to bed feeling relieved that I finally hit it :)

Mobius Mobius!

That will be hit next time you're here.

:D

Mobius > Mobius > Tomahawk > Tomahawk > Blurry Whirl > Blurry Whirl > PS Whirl > PS Whirl > Janiwalker > Janiwalker > Superfly > Superfly > Void > Void.

You will hit that next time. :) I've decided.

And I just remembered: The Montana guys got a kick out of how appropriate my shirt was that morning.

Hehe, I remember it now that you brought it up Kevin. Aaaaaaaaah good times :)

I took today off from footbag. My ankle (left) has been giving me some problems and I don't know why. It hurts when I crank it to do an inside/clipper - feels as though something is being dislodged on the outside of the inside of my ankle (get it? :P). It feels good now and I'll do some stretches to see how it is tomorrow. If it's good then I'll kick. If not then who knows.

Anywho, my Tuesday nite session was alright. Not too many highlights but then again I blame it on the ankle (I took a tumble on a Paradon attempt and landed first on my ankles, then on my bum - after that it just got worse). I beat my Butterfly record - it is now 47. If my BOP strings don't work I just go into consecutives, which seems to be working well.

I also ended up hitting the BAP drill starting on both sides. I've only done it once before which was about a year ago so that was satisfying. I wish I could have kicked longer but alas, my ankle... :(

Well, approximately 3 hours of footbag today spread out over two sessions. Today yielded some good and bad results.

The bad news is that it seems like both my ankles are suffering from this weird injury. Before I go into sessions, they feel fine but afterwards it hurts to even do clippers. The closest thing I can find that I can relate it to is...
Dislocation of the peroneal tendons

What are the Peroneal Tendons?

The peroneal tendon runs behind the lateral malleolus (the bony bit on the outside of the ankle). If the tissue that holds the tendons in place is torn by turning the ankle over (ankle sprain) then the tendons can slip forward over the malleolus.

Repeated dislocations can result in inflammation. The injury is common in athletes with unstable ankles. Often a contributing factor to this is tension in the muscle belly of Peroneal tendon. Deep tissue massage is an excellent way of identifying and releasing this.

What are the symptoms of this injury?

Pain when you turn the soles of the feet outwards and upwards (pronation).
Pain or tenderness behind the lateral malleolus (bony bit on the outside of the ankle)..
Swelling and bruising.
I'm thinking that what caused this was, initially, that bad Barfly attempt which resulted in me landing on both my ankles in the inside delay position at Kevin's place. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is only a slight speed bump on the footbag highway.

The good news is that this injury is forcing me to work more on my toe game, which I did today - mostly pixie and atomic shuffle with some DLO in there. Some stuff from today:

- New Atom Smasher Record - It is now a pitiful 5, up from an embarrassing 3
- Atomic Pickup > Atom Smasher > rpt
- Tap > Atom Smasher x 3
- Mr. Grant's pixie drill was off my foot (Pixie ss Pickup > Magellan > Smear > Smudge > Pixie ss Mirage > rpt)
- Skull Smasher bs!!

I guess that's about it - weakside Irish Cream seems attainable though it feels out of whack. I gave a few attempts at strongside Irish Cream and came fairly close - damn that trick is sweet.

Tomorrow I am babysitting my little cousin. It is so horrible - all we do is play Xbox, floor hockey and now they just got a hot tub 8). They always have good food to eat and my little cousin doesn't mind if I pick on him a bit. Someone save me  .

I kicked for about 3 hours today, which resulted in some good and bad things again. I went a bit hard on my ankle the last session, trying to hit some tricks which I was sooo close to getting. Other than that clippers weren't in any discomfort until the last 30 minutes so I guess they've been healing up :)

Alright, I'm tired so here are the highlights:

- Butterfly > Pdx Mirage x 10 > Osis x 20 > Butterfly x 18 (New guiltless record)
- Magellan > PLO > Magellan > PLO > Smear > Pixie ss Mirage > Smear > Pixie ss Mirage > Pixie ss Pickup > Paste > Pixe ss Pickup
- Footed Andrew's pixie drill again
- Toe Barrage > PLO > Toe Barrage > PLO
- Gyro DLO > Toe Barrage bs
- Gyro DLO > Toe Barrage > Pixie DoD off the foot (that made me feel like I was BAP for about 2 seconds  )
- Really really really close to Gyro Janiwalker on both sides

Yeah, after drilling Gyro Barrage I found that I could pull them off fairly high up and tried it as a set for shits and giggles. What started as shit turned more serious and I actually was able to do it as a complete set on a few (of the many) attempts. It's so hard though :(

I think I'm going to start drilling Barrages more again.
