The question is:

Should The government be able to negotiate with terrorists?

Hey Alex - just one thing I wanted to add, but forgot. Probably you'll have handed the assignment in before you read this but anyway.

Try your best not to mention your own personal opinions until towards the end when you make it very clear that what you're stating are your own opinions. This is why it was important to use quotes etc. You can still get across a point of view without saying that you agree with it. The aim should be to appear objective and un biased. So you write things like:

Governments such as the Australian government hold the view that if you negotiate with terrorists they will have more power and will feel that such actions achieve the desired results, however critics of such policy argue that without the willingness to negotiate it leaves violence as the only option. etc. This would be a perfect opportunity to quote both sides as well ie.

"...but we wouldn’t, of course, be changing our foreign policy or our policy in relation to Australians working in Iraq on the basis of threats by terrorists. Because, if you do that, what you do is you endanger still more of your people and the people of other nationalities; the point I’ve often made. And it has been a standing position of Australian governments since time immemorial that we don’t give in to terrorists." - Alexander Downer, Australian Foreign Minister, 14/7/2004 - 3AW Radio.

"He is the Minister of Foreign Affairs, it's his portfolio. If we are at some kind of war, then we should negotiate, he should speak to the head of JI and ask him: 'Why? What's the problem?'

He went to North Korea and spoke to our alleged enemies and tried to be diplomatic there. I think it's now time we became diplomatic elsewhere." - Brian Deegan, Father of Bali bombing victim, 10/7/2004 - Fairfax media.

argh no edit option,

I just wanted to add that it gives your arguements a lot more weight if you write them in an objective manner. That's not to say you can't put forward a particular view by being clever - but try not to make it look like you have a particular opinion - you need to look like you're just presenting how other people feel about an issue - not how you feel about it. Of course you want to mention your own opinions as well - but seperate these from the rest of the arguement.

it seems there is no edit button just for when you say something you totally didn't mean, you can't fix it. Funny when its not you. Not that this has really anything to do with this thread or your post wheels.

You may want to research Franco`s history with negotiating with Terrorists. Franco was the dictator of Spain from the late 1930s til he died in the mid 70s. No terrorism problems under his rule.

America`s stated policy is that it doesn`t negotiate with terrorists, but they actually do.

Keep in mind Fransisco Franco was a fascist and he spilled lots of blood during the Spanish Civil War.
