it was actually a very significant majority. it was underplayed because this election happened to have the largest voter turnout in history (democrats like to say that more people voted against bush than ever voted against a president before, while neglecting to mention that millions more voted for bush than ever voted for any president before).

i also think you're wrong about how americans are supposedly very confused about the issues. i would wager that, on a general principle, this is a problem that plagues every democracy. most people (in the world, i'm generalizing) don't give a damn about anything beyond their own lives - and vote that way. it just so happens that 1) the world places a lot more weight on the american elections (because of our "superpower" status.. somehow that makes us important?) and 2) americans tend to have a slightly different view than the rest of the world (we have a lot more lockean influence)

Do you think the Amnesty International report is "absurd"? Is GWB correct in saying that it is "absurd"? Is it "absurd" to think that that prisoners are abused/ mis-treated while under US detention? Is it "absurd" to think that they are not being abused? Did you read the report?

The Sunday Times of London recently reported on new evidence showing that "The RAF and US aircraft doubled the rate at which they were dropping bombs on Iraq in 2002 in an attempt to provoke Saddam Hussein into giving the allies an excuse for war." The paper cites newly released statistics from the British Defense Ministry showing that "the Allies dropped twice as many bombs on Iraq in the second half of 2002 as they did during the whole of 2001" and that "a full air offensive" was under way months before the invasion had officially begun.

"regular attacks on civilian installations including food warehouses, residences, mosques, roads and people."
Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.
The Defence Secretary said that the US had already begun "spikes of activity" to put pressure on the regime. No decisions had been taken, but he thought the most likely timing in US minds for military action to begin was January, with the timeline beginning 30 days before the US Congressional elections.

Our representative were most definately mis-lead on the war leading up to the "start" of the war which had begun months earlier. It's time for the "I" word to be used, and seriously.

Misleading congress to take a country to war is a high crime, much much higher than a little affair with an intern.

So much pathos, it should be engraved on a monument to the fallen

About the dead soldiers, check it out who the soldiers are. You will find that a great majority of soldiers(not officers)are of Latin descent or blacks, and some 15% whites from trailor parks. That is the way your government gets rid of young potential troublemakers, promise schooling, give out uniforms, drill, send to a desert/hills/jungle, kill/torture some locals if you feel like it, defend uncle sam's interests, if killed make a hero
all those people that are in our army right now are volunteers. they choose to fight.

It's probably not a big story in the US because it would be "unpatriotic" to report on, but they had to shut down all military recruiting for several days to "retrain" their recruiters after hundreds of investigations into coercive recruiting tactics, threatening behaviour and illegal recruiting methods.

"The prison holds about 540 detainees. Some have been there more than three years without being charged with a crime"

“They are dangerous individuals,” he said. “They are enemy combatants for a reason: because they seek to do harm to the American people. And these are individuals that were picked up at the battlefield in the war on terrorism. This is part of winning the war on terrorism: going after and capturing or bringing to justice those who seek to do us harm.” - White House press secretary Scott McClellan

'dangerous individuals'
'seek to do harm to the American people'

Hmmmm. Here's an idea. Lets lock them up, torture them and forget about 'em. That'll cure there hatered of the US.
Better yet, let's bring 'em closer to their 'hell'. Lets ship them away from family and friends, and take 'em closer to the very nation they seek to destroy.
Why bother with re-education, aid and assistance when we can just lock 'em up and forget about 'em?
Comment in the BCS blog if you feel the need to.
