Whats so important about your shoes.

Post by Jamo »

Ok, i describe myself as a typical white-trainer wearing "townie" if you like. And i dont believe in changing my shoes every time i want to footbag. Too much preparation tends to turn me off of something (like making a cup of tea, tastes ten times better if someone else makes it  )
But anyways, to the point, ill never buy a pair of lavers, and i dont see the point. Sure they make shredding a lot easier, but if your THAT good, then why do you need it made easier.
If you learnt how to shred from the very beginning in a pair of typical K swiss or something, then surely you wouldnt need the extra help.
What ya reckon?

No.

If you get them or play in them you will understand why. You dont seem like someone who has been playing long.

Well if you are THAT good when playing in K Swiss, then think of how much better you will be if you played in Lavers? You said it yourself:

worldfootbag.com wrote:Ever try playing baseball without a mitt? What about basketball without a hoop? In each of these sports, the game revolves around a primary object, that is, the baseball or the basketball. However, secondary equipment (i.e., the mitt or the hoop), for which there is no practical substitute, is essential to the optimal playing of each game. Wearing a gardening glove on your left hand may help you field a line drive, but it’s no substitute for a baseball mitt. A dart board would give you something at which to shoot a basketball, but hey, you can’t rip twine on a dart board.
gardening glove = K Swiss
whereas,
top of the line baseball mitt = Lavers

So it's your choice, do you want to garden or footbag?

No, I don't play soccer. Yes, there are competitions. 4 years. Lots of practice.

Why limit yourself dude?

See how far you can take yourself, the best equipment is the only way to get there.

Lavers are a really good shoe for getting good at footbag.

Don't close the door to them just yet.

They have nice thin surfaces that are also smooth, flat and grippy. they dont have wierd shit sticking out anywhere or any bells OR whistles. They are just a really good basic shoe.

Thats all.

No i havent been footbagging long, and no i havent worn a pair of lavers. Some saying this would be good grounds for "Stfu you dont know what your talking about" but if you look at my argument closely i dont need to know what im talking about. All anybody needs is some common sense.

Who would you consider the better baseball player then? The one who can catch 100 of the trickiest throws with a mitt, or the one who doesnt need the mitt?
Thought so.

Im sure lavers are really comfy and all that bundle of joy to play in, but why not make it a bit harder on yourself, and be able to pick up a footbag anywhere, anytime, without saying "bugar, i forgot my lavers"

You can wear lavers everywhere. They arent made of human flesh you know. THe public can bear to see you wear them.

You can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up the bull's ass, but wouldnt you rather take the butchers word for it?

Are you serious?

Why don't you play with a cat instead of a footbag, too, thats also harder.

yo jamo...

I know a lot of players who can do a lot of tricks in non-footbag shoes. I can rip out a few, here and there, or even do some with bare feet. but nothing compares to how I can play when i've got my lavers on. They're not the greatest thing possible, but they're the best thing going right now.

Can tricks be done with your average trainer? yes. but you are really hindering yourself by using them as your primary freestyle shoe. if you choose to take footbag seriously, you'll understand the need for specialized equipment.

footbag is very difficult, especially when you're learning to do the advanced tricks. the flat, soft surfaces of the laver make your catches more consistent, where as with the harder, rounder leather surfaces of the average k-swiss will be more prone to slippage and rolloff, which hurts your consistency. So, basically, using those kind of average shoes *will* slow you down.

ask Kevin Regamey. He got really, really good with some non-lavers that had a similar shape, but not as much sole, and more weight. as soon as he got lavers, he was much more able to hit clipper tricks, and I believe he said he was really feeling the difference regarding the weight.

So, do you want to get serious with footbag and progress and be able to learn good form? or do you want to hinder yourself with something that won't catch well and will mess you up and slow you down?

it's not making it "a bit" harder on yourself. it's making it much, much harder on yourself. trust me. Get a cheap pair on ebay, they'll help. That way, you will be more apt to learn awesome tricks and lead the UK footbag revolution into worldwide recognition.

i think...there are lines to be drawn. lavers are fine by me...i will probably get a pair soon. and some modding is fine by me as well, since footbag DOESNT have equiptment made specifically for the sport, as all other sports. what footbag does lack, however, are strict regulations. i think some modifications may be excessive, but with regulations, it would all be kept on an even playing field. the main defense is that we are merely trying to make proper equiptment for our sport, but i think excessive modification would be parallel to a baseball player using an extremely wide (or just corked) bat, or a goal-keeper who makes his goal smaller to make the game easier. in any case, i certainly have no problem with other people using lavers or any mods at all, its just a personal thing. and of course all the mods in the world wont land a nemesis for a beginner.

Heres my input:

When I fist got into footbag, I didn't think I'd be buying lavers, mostly because of the price. I read post after post on people recommending them, but was always skeptical of how much they really helped. I finally found some very, very nice lavers (new) on ebay for 30 bucks. You can even find some cheaper.

The thing with lavers are, that it helps you progress a lot faster. 99.9 percent of good people got to their skill level by using lavers. Footbagers love to improve, and its very frustrating and disapointing when we dont.

My thought about the whole thing is that it isn't Lavers you need, it's a shoe that's conductive to footbag. There are running shoes and other tennis shoes that work for footbag (and well -- some people prefer these shoes over Lavers, myself included). Some of the things that you need are light weight, flat surfaces, and good support - ironic that Lavers don't have the support part down. However, these are still footbag shoes, and your argument still applies to them. As for that matter, everyone else here has got that rebuttal covered. Why not try them instead of being skeptical? If you don't think they help you that much, then more power to you. Who knows, maybe you'll be the first person to shred fearless in vans and a crocheted bag.
