Hey Andrew, I totally can't film on Saturday -- work, then work Sunday, too. Then our demo and my final -- so I'm super busy, but AFTER this coming week I will film whenever you play (and maybe during the lunch break after the morning sessions of the workshop?)
You can still make it, hey? I think I will go for 9:30 on the first day.

okay, i've been to 3 jams recently and haven't written anything about it in here. it would be a good idea to just let them go, forget all about it and let my blog slowly slip from page 1 to page 2 and with time fall into hazy memory where no one really remembers if i ever had a blog at all....

but no! i have finally found my travel journal and will start rewriting all my experiences from Tokyo Shredder Gathering, Japan, France, Footjam, and finally Shredmonton. let it begin...

April 27 2005, Departing + April 28 2005, Tokyo First Taste

Last night i finished packing my bags at around 1am then went to bed. I woke up at about 5am when mum poked me in the head, i showered and got ready for the grueling flights and stop overs that would take me to tokyo. we left the house at 5:45 for the airport. when i checked in i was given my seat assignment right away, and it was a window. sweet, and unexpected! mum walked me to security and told me to have fun and take lots of pictures!
i was stuck between the window and a fat guy, but atleast i could lean to the window to escape him. i tried to sleep but my legs were cold, so i gave up, and fell asleepn shortly there after. i was woken up as we were coming into van by the attendant asking me to put my seat up.
i got my bag and checked out the airport. it's changed alot since i was last there. i found the international check-in and dumped off my bags at 9am.
4 hours to kill...
i wandered around for a while trying to find something to do when i came across a very odd stand. they rent out personal dvd players to help you kill time. PERFECT! since i had the prize dvd's on me i watched most of SICK 03. the audio in the head phones was kind of sketchy at first then i cranked it up. when i took off the head phones after about 5-10 minutes, i realized i had it cranked to full blast, and the head phones weren't fully in the head phone jack. whoops!!!! i sheepishly appologized to the people sitting around me, and continued watching and killed about an hour and a half.
i hit up a burger king for the last of my greasy western food. a double whopper with cheese combo. mmmm. i walked around a bit more and then exchanged my canadian for yen and went through security. i walked to the end of the terminal, then back, then back again to tire myself out. i NEED to sleep on this flight or i am fucked.
On the plane i was seated across the aisle from a japanese family. they had a bunch of sticky kids, who made lots of noise. one of the spit big wad on the carpet. what a prick!
i waited untill after dinner and after elektra (which i watched entirely with out the use of my head phones and pieced together from lip reading and the [sarcasm] fantastic acting[/sarcasm]) then took a melatonin, and it helped me crash out.
i slept about 3 hours then would doze for minutes at a time after that. Breakfast was really good. it was japanese style rice and salad. very tasty. we landed and i tried to figure out the landing forms, but i must have checked the "no, i let a strange man in a black mask who showed up at my house the night before my flight and offered to pack my bags do it" box, because they thoroughly went through EVERY SINGLE POCKET in my bags. they unfolded all my cloths, opened my soap and shampoo to have a look inside. it was crazy. they were asking if the shred videos had pronography in them and, just incase i didn't understand, held up a cartoon image of playboy/ hustler magazines and XXX vhs tapes. either way i had to do alot of explaining as to what footbag was, and that no, there was no naked folks in them. that god they didn't call me on that, since i had buda's best...
i then changed and bought my train ticket to tokyo. i was confused abit as to where i was to stand to acctually get on the train, but it arrived and had "tokyo" written on the side in english, so i figured it would be the right one. i changed lines to the yamanote with ease, since there is tons of english sign posting. i got off at shibuya and found the hachimo statue where i was to meet kim san.
i couldn't help but feel odd that the sky was dark, but that i could see everything around me with no problems, because there were massive 70 foot lighted billboards on every corner and atop every building. it was surreal.
hachimo is a very common meeting place, and i didn't really get a very good glimps of the statue, because there was like 190 people around it waiting to meet friends, or bowing and conversing taking off together.
i figured looking at peoples shoes would be a dead give away. i walked through the crowd, looking for lavers, incase i was looking for the wronge face. i was pretty sure i remembered what kim san looked like from worlds, but i always thought there was the chance that i was thinking of the wrong person.
Kim san (as i remembered him from worlds) showed up shortly there after in a full, and may i add very sharp looking, business suit. He brought along a friend from work who wanted the chance to work on her english abit. He then asked if i was hungry and took me to a Izakaya, basically a japanese pub. no wings here, but there was some delicious tofu and crest salad and some chicken yakitori. the beer was very very good too. Ken got to tokyo and called Kim and said he would be there in about 20 minutes. Kim san his friend and i all talked for a while and ate drank and laughed.
Ken showed up around 9pm and i had just enough time to give him the traditional bow before i was grabbed into a hug. we talked and drank for a few hours and then ken presented me with a gift. He gave me one of the original Pepsi Twist footbags that were given out during the pepsi footbag campaign in japan, as well as some traditional japanese socks. they have a separate big toe so you can wear them with flip flops. he says they are very good for shredding and hopes they will fit me. I gave him a gift in return, a special ken somolinos copy of erik's Hackrifice 2004 video.
we parted ways at 11, and i was greatful, because i hadn't had more than 4 hours sleep in about 36 hours. Plus, Ken was staying with a non-footbag friend for the next few days and needed to spend some time with her so she wouldn't feel TOTALLY used. Kim san and i took the subway to his place, which is a quiter borough further away from downtown, and i presented him with some gifts as a thank you for letting me stay with him during the tournament. I gave him a canadiana t-shirt, a fridge magnet, a key chain, and some really good maple syrop. it was time to hit the hay, so kim rolled out the sleeping mats and we crashed around 2am.

more to come....

Led Zepplin Rocks...

Japan April 29th, friday

We woke up at 9:30. i felt alright, but not 100%. No jet lag though, so that right there is a huge bonus! we got our things together and left to meet Ken. we met up with him at a café and waited untill some players from osaka, Devi, Morio, and Kenzo. Yesterday ken was talking up Kenzo, so i was excited to get to play with him.
we had some lunch at a cheap tempura restauraunt and it was sooooo good! even though ken described it as a cheap place to eat, it still beat the tumpura i had back home, hands down! authentic food tastes better, who knew?
Ken wanted to take us an alternate route to yoyogi park to show me a funny sign. we walked down some back alley ways to a dentist office. the sign: "Ouchi Dentist Office" it cracked me right up. ken and i made some jokes about how that guy went through dentistry school with out even knowing how funny it is. i really don't think any of the others got it, even after we explained it... i'll post all the pictures later...
yoyogi park is very nice! Lots of things going on at all times, like little kids trying to catch minnow in the ponds, groups of jugglers, devil stick guys, diablo-ers, double dutchers, drummers, dancers, musicians of all varieties, bmxers, skaters, and young teen girls practicing hip-hop dance routines. i watched a few women practice a traditional fan dance which was pretty neat.
Ken, Kim, kenzo, morio, and a hand full of other were playing while others sat and watched. Henmo, who i had met at worlds showed up, but did not play, and ken said this is common from him. he's very focused on the competition and doesn't want to risk anything the day before. Takumi, who i was really looking forward to meeting, saddly didn't show up.
Ken was doing lots of frontside atomic stuff, that had been already hit on video, but the tape went missing and he seemed on a mission to hit all of it again, and i think he accomplished most of it. i got to see "what?" again. i still can't quite figure it out...
I hit blurry whirling swirl 3 times, which was really great. twice was on video, but on the slo-mo review had the'd the swirl on one of them. the other was an odd angle, but kenzo saw it and proclaimed it clean. double sweet! i also managed ripped> ripped which got lots of high fives. i gave ken some quick stepping ducking tips, and he said he'd give them a try later, since he didn't want to pull anything.
Kenzo had clown face off his foot. i'm not sure about how deep the last dex was, but it was there, and it blew my freaking mind!
i was really afraid of burning my lilly white skin, since it was like 27 and back home it was still snowing, and the most light i had been exposed to was the 100 watt bulb in the kitchen. i kept jumping around in the circles so i wouldn't get fried.
after the shred ken took me to check out meiji- jingu, the best shrine in tokyo, and excelently located next to the park. it has a series of gigantic gates that you walk through on your way to the shrine and each gate post is an entire tree. they look like redwoods from the west coast! huge!
i was really struck by how large the grounds were. lots of veritation, which didn't really fit my image of tokyo being a concrete jungle. being surrounded by ponds full of koi, flowers, bushes and covered from the sun by the cieling of lush green made me feel like i was out in the country somewhere, not in down town tokyo. you couldn't even hear the traffic.
we get to the shrine and purify our selves by pouring water on our hands and heads. i mention that my guide book said you should also wash your mouth out and ken quickly jumped in suggesting i go ahead and tell him how it goes. since i really didn't want an other intestinal parisite i'd pass.
we go to the main temple where you toss some coins in a box and pray. ken says we'll pray, so he asks if i am right handed or left handed... thinking nothing of it i say right. he explains that i have to put it in the air. this didn't seem too unusal. "you also have to raise the opposit leg"... :? ummm? how about no? i call him on it and he has a nice little laugh to him self. isn't that special? pick on the foreign kid... clever... he tells me the proper way and we get on with it. i snap some flix and we're off like a new brides panties.
ken then took me down takeshita- dori, a street thronged with teenagers buying english t-shirts they don't understand (or just don't make sense... "All well that is endis well" i'll give you half marks for being close). i really liked the feel here. there's a goth shop that only offers cloths that come preripped, black, and covered in studs and chains, next to a hip hop clothing store, which is located next to a poster-pin up shop, next to a fake jewlery shop. ken and i hit up the jewler. i nab a killer mercedes meadallion that is covered in rhinstones and spins. snappy. ken nabs a superman emblem that's also jewel encrusted. he says "i'll take this one" places it on the table and it breaks... okay, maybe not this one... i walk out with mine and tell ken he can wear mine if he'll stop sulking.
we went back to yoyogi and met up with every one. ken had to skidaddle but the rest of us went to get some eats. X+Y, Keita, Tencho, Tosh, Kim, Kenzo, Morio, QP, Devi and my self walked to a chinese/ japanese restauraunt. I love tosh's hair. it's super badass!!! i didn't say anything though because i wasn't sure if it was appropriate
the food was great and i got lots of props on my use of chopsticks, my well timed "Domo Arigato Gozaimasu" and my shred during the day. they kept thowing words at me to learn, and although my pronunciation was alright, i couldn't remember them for more then a minute or 2 befor they were gone. all i can really remember is "chomi- chomi style" which isn't a good thing (editor's note: to this day i still don't know exactly what it means), sumimasen which means excuse me, you just yell this word alot untill some one comes to help you. none of this namby pamby wishy washy north american crap where you wait to see if your waiter comes by to ask them a question. you yell, they deliver! sweet! there was lots of "Kampai"-ing which means cheers, and also i recall shouting "sumimasen,.." and ordering a glass of water and thanking the server all in japanese, but only after significant coaching from kim, tencho and tosh.
there was a wedding party going on at the restaurant as well, so i was required to welcome the bride and groom into the place with a song that i didn't know but still managed to mimic the chorus well enough to shout it when it came around again after a round of clapping. kim and i bowed out, but i don't remember when exactly and headed home for a good night's sleep before the competition.

Ahahahaha chomi chomi! I heard a lot of that from Yusuke and Maasa in Montreal. :)

We'd walk down St. Catherine's street, Yusuke would happily point at the prostitutes and say "CHOMI CHOMI GIRL!"

Great write-up Andrew...I actually just found my own event journal, and am in the midst of recalling ShrEdmonton. So far I've made it to Saturday. :)

i just had the best canada day ever!

i played footbag with Derek, Josh, Jess and Erik for 4 hours, at the canada day festival on osborne. man, playing with derek and erik was like old times back when i first started in 2003 when it was them and i every other day down at the forks all summer. i miss those days.
any way, they closed up 5 blocks and threw a big street party. we had mad MAD crowds. like 100+ at one point every one oohing and aawing and clapping. these are the days i play footbag for. i forgot my bags so we wound up using a sand bag and the bag was giving me alot of trouble, very frustrated but it was still fun. in the 4 hours we played i think i had 5 or 6 runs i was really happy with, one was filmed by a news camera so i hope that went to air. i also had one run that was pushing 40 contacts that contained blurry whirl> blurry drifter BSOS, smoke BSOS, pixie same drifter (BSOS?), tombstone (BSOS?), pixie ss whirl, ps whirl, and ripstein at the end mixed in with lots of delicious shuffle contacts. sweet.
jess was going off, lots of completely tiltless strings which was really great to see. she's really coming into her own.
erik was rocking the "i'm injured, but i'm still going bust longer then all of you regardless" stuff. lots of spinning and ducking, lots of 20+ contact strings, and it all flowed so well.
josh was mixing it up alot, i went nuts for pixie bork, as well as pixie heel> same dyno. so cool. he had alot of good pixie shuffle stuff bothsides, always nice to see him busting out flip side. last summer, if you had asked him just to hit flip pixie he would have laughed at you. what a difference a year can make!
derek is back with a vengance! like riding a bike for that guy, you never forget. i don't remember much of what he hit, but i do remember 69 first try, nuke torque first try, whirl wind mid string, and lots of his usual too cool for school style play. he makes me really angry some times

josh and i later had a session just the 2 of us at his place. i love sessions with josh, he's by far my favorite guy to play with, simply because we laugh so much. not alot of memorable things were hit. josh hit the sweetest assassin> pheonix> run ever. so smooth and controlled, it was really great! i worked alot on double leg over links. i hit about 12-14 contacts of tapping legover> double legover. also hit clipper> dlo> smear> dlo> dimwalk> pdx dlo> dimwalk> rpt which was nice. managed to hit predator both sides. and i can't remember the last time i hit flip predator... if ever...

after the 6 hours of footbag i went home and readied my self for a long night of shisha. i hauled the hookah out of my closet, set it all up in the basement, put some darjeeling tea on to steep, slice some bread and cheese, light some incence and candles, killed the lights and chilled on a bed of fluffy pillows. i sat there sipping my tea and smoking shisha listening to some sitar music. i need harem girls to feed me grapes. it felt like i was back in egypt again. the sun burn sure brought back memories. tomorrow it's off to work and then to the lake for some more relaxing, then maybe some footbag on the dock if the legs feel up to it, but for now, i need sleep.

April 30, Saturday Tokyo

Happy Birthday Emma, wish i could be there.

Kim and i woke up around 10 and got all our things ready for the tournament. Took the train and then the subway to meet ken and the other shredders. we met them at 12:30 and walked to the venue shortly there after. we tried to go into the gym, but were told we weren't allowed inside untill 1, so we all hung out and greeted every one as they wandered in. Masa was there and we said our hellos finally. i was wondering where he was the whole time. his son is so cute! a shredder in training... i also said hello to USK and BBK whom i hadn't seen since worlds.
i started warming up as soon as i changed. i warmed up solo then went and played with TJ, a us japanophile who has relocated to japan. he's good and would be completely guiltless if he wanted to be.
i jumped circles abunch, and finally got into a cirle with the one and only takumi. that kid rips! i was really impressed for the most part. he would do long strings of hard stylish guiltless/ tripless contacts , but then would bag and do a mirage> clipper> pick up or something. he's so much better than that, and had i spoken japanese i would have told him. i was still so blown away. that kid can do pretty much anything he want so. a very solid game with pretty much every set bothsides. sick!
my eagerness to start warming up screwed me up a bit, because i was in the second group to go for phat combo, so i had to stay warmed up through out the entire first group. unfortunately i didn't get to see alot of what the others were hitting because i had to stay focused on my game.
Takumi and Kenzo did the same each of us taking a small section of the back half of the gym and working on our combos. blurry whirl> blurry whirl was super consistant so i decided to go with that as a safety. Ripped warrior> rippded warrior was far more consistant that fog> reactor or fog> pixie blender so i went with rw> rw as my second. i was the last competitor to go in the last group and was already a bit tired from having to stay warm for so long. i hit blurry whirl b2b second try but the nerves got to me for the ripped warrior b2b. i was getting the set into my neck. once i completely bailed the second one to crispy torque. on my last try i managed to hit a nice one. i think the duck on the second one was crowny but the judges said it was clean so that reassured me a bit. lots of cheering.
shred 30 started shortly there after and ken and i warmed up together. he said they would be calling my name using japanese pronunciation, so he would tell me when to go up a couple competitors in advance. ken's runs were looking very good, and i knew i couldn't have more than 1 drop to win. i hit one practice where i hit the first 22 before i dropped, so i was confidant... for the moment...
i felt good as we continued, but started having some flip pixie trouble out of my flip blur. i worked on that link for a while and then my shoelaces came undone. as i was tying up my shoe they called a name and ken yelled "ANDREW THAT'S YOU SHIT YOU'RE UP!!!"
"WHAT?!?! Really?"
"no. sorry. haha"
what a bastard. obviously he saw that last practice of mine and couldn't handle the competition... bastard.
when it was ACTUALLY my turn, i did fairly well, started strong but ended soft. did about the first half or so befor i dropped, then another one 3/4 through and another one right at the end. i dropped to clipper and finished with a ps whirl, which helped, but after i realized i should have dropped to at least a butterfly, so the 5 adds recieved from the ps whirl was only really worth 4, to compensate for the 2 add right before it. i need to learn to do caveman 4 adds. i'll need to work on bothsided caveman paradons and symp whirls.
ken was strong through out. he would have probably been dropless if he hadn't shredded his way over to the wall. he dropped then, but finished on fog, which was cool. we both finished on unique 5's.
we did the finals of sick combo, i changed it up this time going for blurry whirl> food, but the food was giving me serious issues. i think my mental game wasn't on top of things at this point *cough* ken *cough*, and my adrenal glands weren't pumping nearly as hard since shred 30 was over. i managed the blurry whirl> food, but the judges took their time to deliberate on the cleanliness of the tricks. i think they were likely talking about the blender, it felt a bit far away and i had to really reach for it. i was later given the AOK and moved on to blurry torque> food, which i hit for the first time earlier that day. i took one shot at it and got the blurry torque, but no step out of it. ken said "are you trying blurry torque to food?" and i replied "yeah. go big or go home" he smiled. i never managed to get it, but the blurry whirl> food managed to win me first prize. USK came second with _________ and tencho took third with spinning pdx mirage> atom smasher.
After that was rippin run, and i can honestly say i was very very disappointed. both ken and i went out first round to tiltless players. sad just sad...
We did however make up for it by avenging our losses on the sidelines, as we out shredded those defeated us at every chance. ken and i also had fun battles like out tripless battles. we both managed 20 or so contact tripless before we dropped. we also had a b-pool with a bunch of people who went out in the early rounds.
Takumi won rippen run, but the final was not the main event. TJvs Takumi was a no holds barred, all out cage match. it had to be around 40-50 contacts. takumi threw down pheonix. he won by about four contcats in the end. after talking to TJ and congratulating him, he said he almost stopped when he heard the crowd scream. he thought takumi dropped, and was about to hand catch when he saw him still playing out of the corner of his eye and went back to work.
After all that was over we all just did some shredding for the rest of the day. i got into a circle with Takumi, Kenzo, Henmo who finally started kicking in circles, and ken. good strings went down.
after all of us had showered and streched we all headed to a japanese/ korean restaurant. all you can eat/ all you can drink/ all you can do (legally) to make andrew a happy boy!
i filled up on food and beer and chowed down with every one. lots of laughing and talking about the competition.
The japanese guys are a bunch of lushes. i had more to drink than pretty much every one at our table and i was by far the soberest. one guy, a friend of kenzo's turned bright red, like he was sunburnt, after a couple sips of beer. i believe ken said they aren't used to alcohol and their bodies react to it very very quickly.
QP got really drunk and walked around making people eat iced cream cake my smearing it on their faces, and his own. one of Kenzo's friends professed his undying love for me, i summed it up to the booze and laughed and said thanks, instead of saying "i'm not going home with you."
Keita was by far the worst off. he was there on all fours crawling around on the floor of the restaurant. i snapped a picture of him, but it looks like he's looking for a lost contact, not about to lose his dinner.
we all piled out of the restaurant and hung around out front drunkenly chatting. QP climbed up on a mailbox and pulled his pants down to his ankles and threw his arms in the air, perhaps proclaiming him self king of the mail box, or the drunkest person around. the world may never know what he said, but once i post the picture, every one will know what it looked like. Kaz, a player from okinawa whom i had played with in a couple circles today, came up and congratulated me on my wins. he later said he had fun kicking with me today and asked "would you please kick me again tomorrow?"
of course i knew what he meant and said sure we will kick tomorrow, but inside i took him literally and though maybe i will... maybe i will...
Kim and i said goodbye to the group, had a laugh at drunken keita who was hanging onto a lamp post for fear of being spun off the earth, and headed back to his place.

April 31 2005, tokyo

...or lack there of. i think being dehydrated from the beer and all the footbag mad kims place seem very very hot last night. i had trouble sleeping. wierd dreams about understanding japanese as well as wierd footbag stuff thet totally freaked me out.
we grabbed boxed sushi lunches and headed to yoyogi koen for the chill out shred. not as many people today because many had to leave that morning to get home, but it was still going off. Takumi was there, keita "the drunken master" was able to let go of his lamp post and come out to shred. Kenzo and morio had said they weren't going to be coming out, because they had dates, but it turns out their dates weren't untill 6 or something. Good shred went down over all but nothing sticks out.
kenzo and morio wanted to know if i wanted to come to a reggae club that night. i chose to pass because i wanted to save my legs for walking and playing some more tomorrow.
after everything wound down and lost of good byes and promises to shred again as soon as possible we said every one dispersed, leaving x+y, keita, ken and i were left with a descision: what to do. most of us were hungry, so we wandered around for a bit looking for a place to eat. no one could make a descision, nor offer any suggestion, so alot of the time we were standing there looking at the others in hopes they would have an idea. we tried a korean grilled meat place, but it was full, so it was back to the street. more standing and gazing at each other. had i know the area i might have offered a suggestion, but other than the places i had already been but couldn't find with a map and a translator, i had nothing.
we eventually stumbled across a ramen noodle shop. after alot of looking at the menu and glancing at each other and mumbling some form a agreement, the descision was made. i think every one was too tired and hungry for much talk, because once we got seated, ordered (ken ordered me one with every thing in it), and served, we all started to chow down... except for ken, who wouldn't stop talking! he would raise his chop sticks to his mouth, pause, lower them, then say something like "i think i understand how to hit fury now," then raise them again, pause, lower, and say something like "not that i can't hit it, but i think i understand how to hit it better..."
i enjoyed the conversation, but i usually gave short one or 2 syllable answers like "oh yeah?", "un-hunh" and "i see" because i was really digging the ramen! the crappy packaged just add ramen we have in canada is absolute shit, and i will never be able to eat it again! mine had scallions and scrambled eggs and peppers and onions and chicken and bbqed pork and fish eggs and hard boilled eggs and noodles and was totally delicious and i slurped it with vigor! i will from this day forth be a ramen snob, comparing every bowl of ramen i ever have to this one, and it will never live up to it (unless i get back to japan).
ken didn't finish his so keita and did for him. we then had to satisfy keita's sweet tooth and went to another place and got these wicked parfais! i finally got to repay my hosts the tiniest little bit by covering all the parfais. i was begining to feel really really bad about it because every time i would put down my money to pay and push it into the pot total, it would suddenly be back beside me and the server would have already collected and they would say, "don't worry this one is on us!"
yeah? well, the last one was as well, and the one before that and the one before that, so finally i grabbed the bill and payed.
but not before accidentally telling keita to "please go ahead" when he was holding the bill instead of saying "please, give it to me". they have various different words for please and it's meaning. i was so used to saying "dozo" or "please go ahead" when giving rebates in the circle i slipped up there.
keita knew what i wanted i guess because he gave me the bill, but ken laughed and called me on it.
"i just asked him to pay for it didn't i?"
"ha, yeah you did. nice thing about the japanese though is that he probably would... might as well try..."
eventually we all said goodnight and i went with x+y to his place. he lives a ways out of tokyo in a large apartment (by japanese terms) so we hopped on a commuter train and headed out.
oh, to get good abs, try 15 minutes riding on the metal cargo rack of a bicycle wearing a full pack while trying to find the happy balance between being headbutted in the face and falling off. my abs hurt after that. i had a really really nice japanese style bath though, which loosened me up very very well. sleep will come easy tonight...

May 1st, tokyo

in my last post i forgot to mention that i gave extacy some gift as a thankyou for letting me stay at your place. he seemed to really like them. i gave him a t-shirt, and some wicked maple syrup, and some little canada trinkets. he hung the shirt up and got a picture with me and the shirt, so i take it he liked them.

we woke up earlyish i think. i can't remember when exactly, but it was early. xtacy made a traditional japanese breakfast of baked fish, rice, miso soup and pickled plums and other pickled stuffs. he had to go to school so gave me a ride to the train station on his bike (ab killer!!!). i hopped on a train to shibuya to meet ken at 9:00am.

in my morning glory, i wasn't paying much attention to what i was doing, which was a real mistake. i got onto one of the local trains which stops at every station, instead of the fast trains which just stops at the bigger stations. i realized this pretty much right away and was annoyed because it would hurt my time and i would be a little late. i was trying to figure out which station was the one befor shibuya, so i could get off in time, so i got out my book and had a look and found it then tried to find it on the gigantic light up board inside the train only to realize i had passed it and shibuya 4 stops ago. aaw crap. now i would be really late!

i hopped off at the next stop, and had to back track to shibuya. when i finally arrived to meet ken it was something like 9:50am. i was nearly an hour late. it was pretty funny though. when i finnaly found him at the station he pulled me into a hug and said something like "thank god, i though you were dead!" or something to that effect.

we went to his friends place to drop off my bag and headed out to takeshita-dori again. ken absolutly loves this street! and so doi i for that matter. i think it pretty much sums up young tokyo. one billion styles all trying to fit in, each clashing horribly with the others, nothing matches and no one really has a clue as to what's going on (or maybe that's just me). we had some coffee on a terrace and then did some shopping for gifts.

we went to shibuya and went into an arcade. ken was really into showing me what young people do in tokyo, and this was stop number one. we played a taiko drumming game, which also to me is a metaphor for tokyo. a fusion of traditonal and modern japan. an instrument with a rich cultural significance mixed with goofy animé characters, bad music, zany sound effects and flashing lights. total sensory overload i thought i was going to have an epileptic seizure! ken thought it would be the best place to have one- a memory i would never forget!

ken then wanted to show me a porno store, because they aren't like the ones you get back home. there are alot of crazy magazines for specific fetishes. like girls dressed up like cats, or nurses, or men, or animé porno. you name it, they got it. we found a place, but the prono connoisseur that is ken somolinos told me the place was not up to par in the fetish department. we moved on...

at some point around here ken forced me to get my picture taken with some tart of an animé statue. he said they have these stautes all over that place as advertising, and they usually hold signs or white boards or something.

at around noon we were looking for some place that gave free wine samples (or maybe it was saké?) and took a turn that would forever change my freestyle game. while we were at takeshita dori i had been browsing some shoe stores and mentioned i was looking for some climacools but ken said i shouldn't hold my breath. i continued looking through out the day. while we were hunting down this place for the free booze we walked by a shoe store and i said "maybe this place will have them."

as soon as the words were out of my mouth, there was a pair of black clima cools on display in the window! holy crap! i must have been like a 6 year old on christmas morning i ran into the store hauling ken with me and had him translate for me. "i need a size 9!".... they didn't have them "8 1/2? 9 1/2???".... 9 1/2 they have! i tried on one, it fit, i bought them! hurrah! i have climacools!

after that we went to tokyu hands department store. this place is huge! like 6 stories high and jammed with stuff! ever some restaurants! i ended up getting josh's daughter a cute little bear bag here called relaxing bear. (which she now uses for her hair clips! so cute! she won't leave the house with out her "relaxation bear"!) we then went to yoyogi for a final 2 man session.

we thought morio and kenzo would show up, but when ken called them they were still asleep. obviously a hard night at the club! highlights from the session: played in climacools and liked them from the start! blender> fog almost bs. double blender. torch-r-rack all in the climas! cool. haha.

ken and i gave each other tips back and forth for different moves. my stepping ducking tips seemed to help, because he hit his first ripped warrior flipside, and bsosed it! wicked! his torque tips really helped. i can tell this move will get easy with practice.

tosh came to the session and filmed. he has a sick camera! he also presented me with some gifts on behalf of the whole japanese footbag community. one was a set of stamps with the equivalent of my name in japanese. An-Do-Ryu. ken translated all the conversation for us. he had alot of choice in the characters he could have chosen, since each character has a meaning as well as a sound, so he chose ones that he though best represented me as a person. the "An" means true or trustworthy or trustfuly depending on context. the "Do" means road or pathway. The "Ryu" means going up or ascending. so my neame means truly going up the road, or something to that effect. it was a huge compliment for sure! he also gave me 3 bandanas which have a special name in japanese that i can't remember. he chose these as gifts because he noticed i always use them to keep my hair back. one had pine needles on it, which is a symbol for first, signifying my first competition win at the tournament. the second is blue with whit snowflake like things on it which is a symbol for september, my birth month. the third is a typical japanese print with the rising sun on it. i was really really touched by the gesture, but was pretty speachless at that point and i think i did a piss poor job of showing how much it all meant to me. i said lots of domo arigato gozaimasu's so i hope i got it across that i was very very honoured.

us 3 went to tokyo station after a quick stop at ken's friends house to get my bags and shower. we met up with kenzo and morio. us 5 went to dinner, but the first place was mad expensive so we went to a noodle shop. i had oodong (sp?) noodles, which are thick, and very very tasty.

ken and i said our goodbyes because i had decided to spend an extra day in kyoto which meant i wouldn't see him when i got back to tokyo. after all was said and done, k, m and i went and hopped on the shinkansen. we got lucky, i was only a few rows ahead of them in the same car. cool! we changed spots every stop so i wouldn't be lonely the whole ride. nice guys. i thought i had lost my ticket, because kenzo had taken it to check my seat but i didn't remember him giving it back. i asked him if he had it, he said no, i tore my bag apart, and found it in a pocket i usually don't keep tickets in. my bad. either way, the conducter punched it and i settled in for a short trip. this train ain't called a bullet train for nothing!!!

k and m got off in kyoto with me just to make sure i could find adam, which was great because he was a bit late and they kept me company. we got some pictures taken and goofed around a bit. finally adam arrived ad i said goodbye to kenzo and morio. i hope to see them again some time soon. great guys!

adam is a cool guy. he's studying buddism at a university in kyoto and knows tons about buddist history and had lots of stuff to tell me. alot of it sadly didn't stay in my head for too long, because it was quickly fogotten as i tried to remember the name of the next temple we walked past, or the word for what we just saw. he knows alot.

we went to a gyoza bar. adam knows the owner of the bar through footbag! how cool. he was showing people clippers outside the restaurant and the owner saw him through the door and came out to talk to him. we had lots of gyoza and beer. and i payed for it! i don't feel like such a mooch any more!

we went to adams place which is in the foothills of the mountain's. the walk was very nice. the hustle and bustle of tokyo far behind me, this was more my pace. we talked about all sorts of stuff and really seemed to hit it off.

his place is very small, smaller than kim's but for some reason i felt much more comfortable here. i felt more craped at kim's place. probably because kim has more stuff. adam has a very modest space. a sink, a desk, a stereo on the desk, a chair, a book shelf, posters of clasical guitar shows and players, and a tv/ vcr unit and some classic shred videos.

we rolled out the mats and had just enough room for the 2 of us to lie down. with the window open and the cool mounain air blowing in i slept like a baby.

Hey -- Eli convinced me to download Quicktime 7 yesterday -- once I had it I remembered Andrew's "Crappy Session" video and wondered, "Hey -- I wonder if that would play in this player", and lo it does!!
